Abstract

This health check-up program aims to increase public understanding of preventive measures and healthy lifestyles. The free health check-up conducted at Byel Farma Pharmacy involved simple checks such as uric acid, cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure. This activity was attended by 50 residents as participants. The results of the examination showed that blood pressure (hypertension) was the most common health problem, with 25 residents showing uncontrolled results, followed by uncontrolled fasting blood glucose in 14 residents, uncontrolled cholesterol in 10 residents, and uncontrolled uric acid in 5 residents. Lecturers involved in this activity also provided education on the correct use of medication, including the correct dosage and frequency of administration. Residents were reminded not to change or add medication without first consulting a doctor or pharmacist. It is hoped that residents in RW 04 Semanan Alas Tua, West Jakarta will continue to maintain their health, reduce the risk of worsening diseases, and undergo routine checks for hypertension, cholesterol, and uric acid.

Abstract

Coughing is a condition where an individual expels air suddenly from the thoracic cavity through the epiglottis and mouth. Coughs are commonly accompanied by phlegm or can be dry. Cough-related illnesses are frequently experienced by individuals of all ages, including adults and children. Conducting educational activities on the use of cough medicine is an essential effort to enhance public understanding of health. This educational initiative was carried out at Apotek Byel Farma to provide comprehensive and practical information on the appropriate use of cough medicine. The objective of this activity is to improve public knowledge and understanding of the types of cough medicine, correct usage, and the importance of following usage instructions. The methods employed include organizing educational sessions, question-and-answer sessions, and distributing educational materials. Participants involved in this activity comprised the general public visiting Apotek Byel Farma. The results of this activity indicate a significant increase in participants' knowledge and understanding of cough medicine usage, as well as awareness of the importance of consulting healthcare professionals. In conclusion, this educational campaign has successfully made a positive contribution to increasing public health awareness regarding the correct use of cough medicine.

Abstract

Background: Grape seeds are one part of the grape plant known to have antibacterial properties because they contain secondary metabolite compounds such as tannins and flavonoids. Previous studies have shown that grape seed extract has antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus mutans, Propionibacterium acnes, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. However, testing for Enterococcus faecalis from 70% ethanol extract and n-hexane has not been found. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of n-hexane and 70% ethanol extract from grape seeds against E. faecalis bacteria. Methods: Extraction was carried out using the maceration method using two solvents: n-hexane and 70% ethanol. The antibacterial activity test used the disc diffusion method to determine the Diameter Inhibitory Power (DDH) value at extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%. Results: The results obtained showed that grape seed extract had antibacterial activity against E. faecalis, with the DDH value of n-hexane extract respectively being 9.70 mm, 10.36mm, 10.55mm, and 11.31 mm at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%. The DDH value of the 70% ethanol extract was 11.20 mm, 12.34mm, 13.63mm, and 15.49 mm at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. Conclusions: These results indicate that n-hexane and 70% ethanol extract from grape seeds have antibacterial potential against E. faecalis.

Abstract

Syzygium myrtifolium (red shoot leaves) is widely known for its rich phytochemical profile, particularly flavonoids, which exhibit various pharmacological properties. This study aimed to determine the total flavonoid content in the crude extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction of red shoot leaves (Syzygium myrtifolium) using a colorimetric method with quercetin as a standard. The results revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction had the highest flavonoid content (65.781 ± 6.365 mgQE/g), followed by the crude extract (26.093 ± 0.961 mgQE/g), n-hexane fraction (18.293 ± 2.925 mgQE/g), and water fraction (12.583 ± 0.824 mgQE/g). The study also found that the solvent polarity significantly influenced the flavonoid extraction efficiency, with ethyl acetate, a moderately polar solvent, being most effective for isolating flavonoid aglycones. The n-hexane fraction contained polymethyl flavonoids, which are more soluble in nonpolar solvents, while flavonoid glycosides were more soluble in polar solvents like water and alcohol mixtures. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of extraction methods, as the total flavonoid content in mature red shoot leaves was found to be higher than in younger leaves, likely due to increased secondary metabolite production in mature tissues. This study emphasizes the role of solvent polarity in flavonoid extraction and provides insights into the phytochemical composition of S. myrtifolium leaves for potential applications in natural product research.

Abstract

Masih rendahnya kesadaran masyarakat, khususnya lansia, terhadap pentingnya deteksi dini penyakit degeneratif seperti diabetes melitus menjadi tantangan serius dalam upaya pencegahan. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan kesadaran lansia terhadap pencegahan dan pengelolaan diabetes melalui pemeriksaan gula darah gratis serta penyuluhan interaktif. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada 16 November 2024 di RT 008, Kelurahan Pondok Labu, Cilandak, Jakarta Selatan, dengan melibatkan dosen dan mahasiswa Farmasi ISTN. Hasil pemeriksaan dari 39 peserta menunjukkan 20 orang dengan kadar gula darah tidak normal. Berdasarkan kuesioner, 95% peserta menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman mengenai gaya hidup sehat, pengelolaan obat, dan pentingnya kepatuhan terhadap terapi. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kolaborasi edukatif berbasis masyarakat mampu menjadi sarana efektif dalam membangun budaya hidup sehat serta mendorong pencegahan penyakit degeneratif secara berkelanjutan.
