Abstract

The development of the 21st century and education are closely related in equipping students with relevant skills to adapt and succeed in an ever-changing environment. This development demands a more interactive, collaborative, and student-centered learning method. Case-based learning (CBL) is designed to facilitate students’ thinking critically and creatively in solving problems and working in teams so that they can face real-world problems that are integrated into learning. The Understanding by Design (UbD) framework facilitates cases in learning designed to suit students’ interests and needs, enhancing creative thinking skills when integrated with CBL. This study uses a mixed or explanatory method and involves 115 students. Quantitative data was obtained from creative thinking skills tests using pre-test and post-test, which showed differences between the pre-test and post-test and a correlation between creative thinking skills indicators (fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration). Qualitative data from classroom observations showed that students performed the activities well and were supported by interview data, which revealed that students were actively involved in learning, although some students could not relate concepts to problems. These findings support the idea that CBL with the UBD framework helps students understand the ideal gas law and improves creative thinking skills. This study suggests that students can develop better problem-solving skills because the UbD framework facilitates a structured and meaningful learning experience for students.

Abstract

The inquiry learning model is a model that facilitates the construction of students' scientific knowledge which can also improve students' argumentation skills. According to several research results, inquiry-based learning has proven to be effective in improving scientific argumentation skills because in the learning process students are directed in investigative activities to find scientific evidence as a basis for scientific argumentation. By considering the student learning process, the aim of this research is to describe whether the use of three types of inquiry learning models can teach fluid material and influence the student learning process, one of which is students' argumentation abilities. This research method uses mixed method triangulation. The instruments used were interview questionnaires and argumentation tests. The data obtained was then analyzed using simple statistical tests and N-gain scores. Interview data was analyzed to find out clarification of students' answers. The research results of the inquiry learning model were successful in developing argumentation skills, namely the n-gain score resulted in the use of the structured inquiry learning model gaining 0.88, the guided inquiry learning model 0.84 and the open inquiry learning model 0.74.

Abstract

Creativity is one of the skills that must be possessed in the 21st century, especially by pre-service science teachers. However, in fact, the quality of pre-service science teacher creativity still needs to be improved. Therefore, this research aims to increase the creativity of pre-service science teachers through STEM Problem-Solving. This research uses a one group pretest posttest design. The sample in this study was 53 pre-service science teachers in the science education department at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Increasing the quality of pre-service science teacher creativity is measured based on pretest and posttest scores. The pretest and posttest scores were then analyzed using N-Change. Apart from that, it was also analyzed statistically using paired t-test. This is used to ensure that STEM Problem-Solving really has an effect on increasing the creativity of pre-service science teachers. The research results show that STEM Problem-Solving is proven to significantly increase the creativity of pre-service science teachers. The category of increasing pre-service science teacher creativity is in the medium category. The majority of pre-service science teachers' final creative quality is in the creative category.

Abstract

Understanding atmospheric disaster mitigation is essential for students from an early age, especially since Indonesia is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events such as storms and heavy rainfall. Nevertheless, this topic is often perceived as less engaging and tends to lack student participation. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model integrated with Interactive Monopoly in enhancing students’ understanding of atmospheric disaster mitigation and air pollution. The research adopted a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 eighth-grade students. Data were analyzed using the N-Gain test to measure improvement in learning outcomes and the Wilcoxon test to determine the significance of differences between pretest and posttest scores. The findings revealed an increase in the average score from 78.83 (pretest) to 98.5 (posttest). The mean N-Gain score reached 0.94, which falls into the high category. The Wilcoxon test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), confirming a significant difference. During the learning activities, students showed active involvement, effective collaboration, and greater motivation. The integration of TGT with Interactive Monopoly provides an innovative and enjoyable learning approach, statistically proven to improve learning outcomes, engagement, and motivation in contextual science education.

Abstract

Indonesia, located in a highly seismic region due to the convergence of the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates, requires affordable earthquake early warning systems. This research aims to develop an easy-to-use, portable tectonic earthquake detection system based on the Arduino Uno platform. The methodology encompassed the design of hardware and software, the installation of accelerometer sensors, and the programming of the Arduino to detect ground vibration intensity. Test results demonstrate that the system is sensitive to changes in vibration and can provide an audible warning via a buzzer when a predefined vibration threshold is exceeded. Although its accuracy is lower than that of professional seismographs, the system presents an economical solution for deployment in remote areas. Future development could incorporate GPS sensors and artificial intelligence to enhance its accuracy and expand its applicability across various disaster scenarios.
