Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out types of figurative language and their intended meanings. There are two theories that used in this research. The first theory is proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) which is used to find out types of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics. The second theory is proposed by Leech (1981) which is used to find out the meaning of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics. The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The writer collected the data of song lyrics by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the internet, reading and understanding song lyrics, taking note and classifying the data based on type’s figurative language. The writer analysed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there are six types of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics which consist of 3 metaphors (19%), 5 similes (32%), 2 irony (12%), 3 allusion (19%), 1 synecdoche (6%), and 2 metonymies (12%). All of the figurative language have connotative meaning which implicitly deliver hidden messages and life values.

Abstract

In this study, the varieties of metaphorical language and their significance will be identified and analyzed in the lyrics of a few of Billie Eilish's songs. In this study, two theories were employed. The first is Leech's (1981) theory of meaning, which examines the meaning of figurative language, and the second is Knickerbocker and Reninger's (1974) theory of figurative language. This study employed a qualitative methodology. In this study, simile, metaphor, and hyperbole were discovered to be three types of figurative language employed in a few of Billie Eilish's songs. By listening to the song's lyrics, data was gathered. This research led to the discovery of six different forms of figurative language in song lyrics for the study. They consist of 2 items, or 33% similes, 3 items, or 50% metaphors, and 1 item, or 16% hyperbole. There were 13 items or 48% hyperbola, 4 items or 14% simile, 6 items or 22% metaphor, 2 items or 7% personification, and 1 item each of synecdoche and metonymy. Hyperbole, which accounts for 48% of all figures of speech in these songs, is the most prevalent variety. Two of the seven categories of meaning employed in the lyrics—connotative meaning and emotive meaning—are used to interpret the figurative language.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims explain the contextual meaning found in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Lyons (1981) and to explain the context of the situation support the analysis of meaning in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Halliday and Hasan (1985). To analyze the data the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The result showed there are 4 contextual meaning found, these contextual meaning grouped in 2 or (50%) words , 1or (25%) phrase and 1 or (25%) clause. The e contextual meaning consist of informal language ,figurative language, which analyzed based on the context of the situation showed that the field or the topic of each song about love between young adults, Michael Buble and her story about love and her child. the tenor of the participant of each song has similarity using figurative language , idioms, informal language. The mode of each song is the same that all of them are written text but can be read if those song are sung.

Abstract

Desa wisata merupakan salah satu aset kepariwisataan berbasis budaya yang mampu dikembangkan menjadi suatu produk wisata dan Desa Tista merupakan salah satu desa wisata yang ada di Pulau Bali. Namun, pengembangan ini belum didukung oleh sumber daya manusia yang memadai. Hal ini akan berdampak terhadap jumlah kunjungan wisatawan karena pengembangan suatu desa wisata tidak terlepas dari peran masyarakatnya. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, Fakultas Bahasa Asing (FBA) Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar berkomitmen untuk melaksanakan pengabdian masyarakat dalam bentuk kegiatan pelatihan untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris masyarakat lokal di Desa Tista. Pemberian materi berfokus kepada teori dasar hospitality, penggunaan language expressions dan kosa kata dalam kepemanduan, struktur tata bahasa Inggris, serta pronunciation. Jenis kegiatan pelatihan dibagi menjadi 2 kegiatan, yakni: pemberian teori dengan menggunakan metode ceramah dan kelas praktek dengan menggunakan metode bermain peran. Berdasarkan evaluasi non tes yang dilakukan, para peserta pelatihan mampu mengaplikasikan materi yang telah mereka dapatkan dengan baik dan benar pada saat praktek di lapangan. Hal ini terlihat dari penggunaan language expressions dan kosa kata khusus yang digunakan saat menjelaskan objek wisata yang ada. Sehingga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa tujuan dari kegiatan pelatihan ini telah tercapai dengan baik.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian Masyarakat Peduli Bencana COVID-19 merupakan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilaksanakan dalam rangka kepedulian Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar terhadap masyarakat yang terkena dampak dari penyakit Coronavirus itu sendiri. Terhitung sejak Maret 2019 lalu, pembelajaran daring merupakan salah satu dampak terbesar yang disebabkan dalam hal belajar-mengajar. Salah satu yang sangat terdampak oleh pandemi ini adalah siswa/i yang berada di panti asuhan, dikarenakan proses pembelajaran yang dinilai tidak efektif dan kurangnya materi yang diresapi oleh siswa/i. Ditambah lagi kurangnya pengawasan dari orang tua asuh mengingat terdapat banyak anak yang diasuh di panti tersebut. Oleh karena itu, dilakukanlah kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa kegiatan bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris di Panti Asuhan Wisma Anak-Anak Harapan, Desa Dalung, Br. Untal-Untal guna membantu anak-anak panti dalam memahami, serta dapat mempraktekkan materi yang diberikan, dan agar tidak menjadi beban bagi orang tua asuh dalam mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris kepada anak-anaknya. Terdapat 2 program yang akan dilaksanakan yaitu memberikan bimbingan belajar berupa materi baru maupun materi yang telah diajarkan oleh guru mereka di sekolah, dan membuatkan games untuk mengasah daya ingat anak pada siswa Sekolah Dasar di Panti Asuhan Wisma Anak-Anak Harapan. Kegiatan-kegiatan tersebut dilakukan untuk membantu pembelajaran anak dalam berkonsentrasi hingga merangsang daya ingat mereka melalui gambar.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKegiatan penelitian ini merupakan bentuk dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Pengabdianini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk pelatihan bahasa Inggris yang diberikan kepada anak-anak di pantiasuhan Hindu Sunya Giri Denpasar. Tujuan dari diadakannya pelatihan ini adalah untukmemberikan pelajaran tambahan (dalam hal ini bahasa Inggris general) kepada anak-anak di pantiasuhan hindu Sunya Giriri Denpasar agar mereka memiliki kompetensi sehingga bisa mandiri danmampu bersaing di era globalisasi ini. Anak-anak yang akan mengikuti pelatihan ini terdiri darianak yang berisua sebelas sampai tujuh belas tahun dan memiliki kemampuan yang berbeda.Perbedaan kemampuan yang dimiliki setiap anak membutuhkan suatu metode pembelajarantertentu dalam pencapaian belajar, oleh karena itu pelatihan bahasa Inggris ini juga akan mencobaaplikasi dari metode role play (bermain peran). Pengukuran kemampuan awal berbahasa Inggriskelompok sasaran ini dilakukan melalui pre-test sebelum pelatihan dimulai. Setelah diperoleh nilaipasti yang menjadi tolak ukur kemampuan anak-anak maka dapat ditentukan materi pelatihan yangakan diberikan. Tingkat keberhasilan pelatihan ini kemudian diukur kembali dengan test prakteklangsung.Kata kunci: pelatihan, bahasa inggris, panti asuhan, role playABSTRACTThis research activity is a form of community service. This service was carried out in the form ofEnglish language training given to children in the Hindu Sunya Giri Denpasar orphanage. Thepurpose of this training was to provide additional lessons (in this case general English) to childrenin the Hindu Sunya Giriri orphanage so that they have competence so they can be independentand able to compete in this era of globalization. Children who will take part in the training consistof children who are eleven to seventeen years old and have different abilities. The different abilitiespossessed by each child requires a particular learning method in achieving learning, thereforethis English language training will also try the application of the role play method. Themeasurement of the initial English proficiency of the target group is done through a pre-test beforethe training begins. After obtaining a definite value that becomes a benchmark for the ability ofchildren, training materials will be determined. The level of success of this training is then remeasuredwith a direct practice test.Keywords: training, English, orphanages, role play

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menalisa tipe konflik yang dihadapi oleh pemeran untamadan juga sekaligus menganalisa bagaimana semua konflik tersebut membentuk plot darifilm Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. Film Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw sebagaisumber data akan dianalisa menggunakan metode deskriptif kulaitatif. Dalammenganalisis data, penelitian ini akan menggunakan dua teori yaitu teori konflik yangdikedepankan oleh Kenney (1966) digunakan untuk menganalisis tipe konflik yangdihadapi oleh karakter utama dalam cerita dan juga teori tentang plot yang dikemukakanoleh Freytag (1863) digunakan untuk menganalisis bagaimana konflik dapat membentukplot. Setelah melakukan proses analisis, terdapat beberapa kesimpulan yang dijabarkansebagai berikut: terdapat 22 konflik yang mana terdiri dari 5 konflik internal dan 17konflik eksternal. Seluruh konflik yang dihadapi oleh pemeran utama dalam fil Fast &Furious: Hobbs & Shaw terbukti membentuk plot cerita dalam film itu sendiri. Hal inidibuktikan dari setiap konflik di setiap bagian plot memiliki tugas masing-masing.Hubungan antara setiap konflik di setiap plot memaksa certa untuk bergerak menujubagian klimaks dan bagian akhir cerita pada bagian Resolusi.

Abstract

The essence of the implementation of the “Ngaben Massal” ceremony, is a deconstruction of hegemonic discourse in society, a deconstruction of the hegemonic tradition in the Ngaben discourse, starting from the rise of philosophical public awareness starting from the clearer understanding of society in religious literature. From this understanding, other reinterpretations emerge, such as reinterpretation of the meaning of economy, social solidarity and education. This reinterpretation of the meaning of the Ngaben ceremony is a very important basis for appreciation so that mass Ngaben can be widely accepted in most community groups. The implementation of the above is very important that can be grown in the implementation of the Mass Ngaben Ceremony, as a medium of education, is the emergence of public awareness of the essential values ??of a yajna ceremony such as the Ngaben Ceremony itself. So that the essential value of a yajña ceremony (Ngaben) is no longer buried by the routine of a tradition, which is nothing more than a traditional obligation which can give the impression that a yajñas ceremony like Ngaben with the hegemonic tradition is just a burden of tradition that is independent of its essence and meaning. Abstract

Advertisements are a crucial tool for companies to promote their products, utilizing both verbal and visual signs. This study explores the verbal and visual signs in iPhone 14 advertisements, focusing on their denotative and connotative meanings. The research employs observational methods for data collection and qualitative descriptive methods for analysis, drawing on Saussure's (1983) theory for sign description and Barthes' (1967) theory for meaning interpretation. The findings reveal 12 verbal signs, 8 visual signs, 20 denotative meanings, and 16 connotative meanings across two advertisements. The study highlights how advertisers use verbal and visual signs to create distinct concepts and make their products known to the public

Abstract

The study is intended to identify the verbal and non-verbal signs used in the advertising “For Women by Women: IDÔLE Lancôme.” Humans employ both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to engage, including messages, sounds, visuals, and gestures. This study is designed using a descriptive qualitative method. Data is gathered through observation methods. The analysis of verbal and non-verbal signs is done based on Saussure’s semiotic theory. As a result, there are three verbal and three non-verbal signs found. Besides that, the advertiser also wants to provide the audience with a relevant message or piece of advice, emphasizing that ladies should have the courage to follow their vast aspirations. The commercial has nonverbal that may be examined in the form of an image or graphic and appear in terms of color. Through this study, researchers recommend scholars research to explore the vocabulary and grammatical use in advertisements.
