Abstract

The rapid development of 21st-century technology requires innovation in vocational education, particularly in strengthening reading and writing literacy skills that are relevant to workplace demands. However, literacy activities in vocational schools are still dominated by conventional learning materials and have not been optimally integrated with vocational contexts or digital approaches. This study aims to analyze teachers’ and students’ needs for the development of a game-based vocational reading and writing literacy e-module at SMK Negeri Jateng Di Purbalingga. The research employed a research and development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, focusing on the analysis stage. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations involving two Indonesian language teachers and students from grades X and XI. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively, while quantitative data were analyzed using percentage techniques. The findings reveal that both teachers and students perceive the development of a game-based digital literacy module integrated with vocational content as highly necessary. Teachers emphasized the need for contextual, interactive, and industry-relevant learning materials, while students expressed strong interest in game-based learning to support literacy activities. Therefore, a game-based vocational reading and writing literacy e-module has strong potential to enhance students’ motivation, engagement, and literacy competence in vocational education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need to develop drama teaching materials based on Banyumas folklore, as an effort to provide materials that are relevant to students' needs and characteristics. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model. The focus of the study is the needs analysis stage, the first part of the ADDIE development model. The population in this study was all high school students in the Purwokerto area who received drama material in Indonesian Language subjects. From this population, the study collected samples from two schools: SMAN 5 Purwokerto and SMAN 3 Purwokerto. The results showed that students had a positive perception of drama learning and gained meaningful learning experiences, especially in aspects of self-expression, social interaction, and mental strengthening. However, the available teaching materials remained general, did not cover the full range of drama theory, and did not include examples grounded in local culture. Students also indicated a need for more comprehensive teaching materials that cover affective, psychomotor, and cognitive aspects. Furthermore, students have a favorable view of Banyumas folktales as a learning resource, particularly because their geographical and cultural proximity makes it easier for them to understand the values and moral messages conveyed in these tales. These findings confirm the need to develop drama teaching materials based on Banyumas folktales to provide contextual, meaningful, and student-centered learning.

Abstract

Studies on student-written news texts tend to focus on language errors, whereas research that systematically examines text structure based on van Dijk’s model remains relatively limited. This study aims to describe the structure of news texts written by seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto based on macro-structure, superstructure, and micro-structure aspects. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The research data consisted of ten news texts written by students, obtained through documentation and analyzed using the model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The results indicate that regarding macro-structure, 9 out of 10 texts (90%) contained clear and relevant topics, including themes such as traffic accidents, natural disasters, environmental issues, and crime. In terms of superstructure, 7 out of 10 students (70%) were able to compose news texts coherently in accordance with journalistic conventions (headline, lead, body, and conclusion), although 3 texts still featured a concluding section that was persuasive and opinionated. Regarding microstructure, the semantic, stylistic, and rhetorical aspects were each met by 9 out of 10 students (90%), while syntax was the weakest aspect, with only 8 students (80%) meeting it; the main weaknesses were found in the inefficient use of compound sentences, the placement of conjunctions at the beginning of sentences, and punctuation errors. These findings indicate that students possess the ability to develop themes and organize news structures but still require reinforcement in linguistic aspects. This study contributes to demonstrating the application of van Dijk’s model in analyzing student texts and provides practical implications for teaching news writing in schools.

Abstract

Indonesian Language learning at the junior high school level covers various language skills, one of which is writing. Theability to write observational report text is one of the important materials taught in grade VIII. This ability still shows differences in student learning outcomes in different learning environments. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the ability to write observational report texts between boarding and nonboarding students of grade VIII junior high schools in Purwokerto. This study used a quantitative approach with a comparative study design. The study population was all grade VIII junior high school students in Purwokerto with a purposive sampling technique totaling 100 students. 50 students of Muhammadiyah Boarding School Zam Zam as a boarding school and 50 students of SMP Negeri 4 Purwokerto as a nonboarding school. The data collection instrument was a valid and reliable assessment rubric. The data collection process was carried out through a performance test for writing observational report texts using LKPD containing instructions. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the average score of the ability to write observational report texts for boarding students was higher than for nonboarding students. The results of the independent sample t-test also showed a significant difference in the ability to write observational reports between boarding and nonboarding students. This study demonstrates that differences in learning environments can impact students writing skills. Teachers can utilize these findings to develop more effective writing learning strategies tailored to their students learning environments.

Abstract

Language, as the fundamental means of communication, represents the symbolization of thoughts conveyed to others. Human understanding of the structure of messages relies on the speaker's language reasoning ability. This ability can be measured from the simplest to the most complex stimuli. Traditionally, assessing language reasoning has been done through written tests, which require extensive preparation and are time-consuming. This study proposes a model for measuring language reasoning ability using a Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT). The CAT adjusts the difficulty of questions in real time based on the participant's responses. If a participant answers correctly, the system presents a more challenging question. Conversely, the system selects an easier question if the participant answers incorrectly. This adaptive approach ensures a tailored and efficient assessment experience, accurately measuring the participant's abilities. The research began by developing a valid and reliable language reasoning test instrument and its quadrant class. This included determining the starting, jumping, and stopping points, culminating in the CAT design. The results of the CAT proposed in this study can map basic language reasoning skills, starting from understanding the concept of facts, applying linguistic rules according to the agreement formed in the read clauses, breaking down information into more specific forms, judging the values of ideas, combining word selection, ideas formation, and context, analogy thinking, and comparative thinking. The analysis revealed that the participants' dominant ability was in comparative thinking, which involves comparing language forms, conditions, settings, and messages in written discourse. Moreover, the CAT system proposed in this study was proven to speed up the testing process while enabling students to complete the tests according to their abilities.
