Abstract

Nature or the physical environment is strategically presented as a compelling attraction to persuade tourists to visit a country, including Indonesia. While previous studies investigated tourism promotion from persuasive devices like metaphors and adjectives, this study takes a different trajectory by investigating the language of attitudes, identified explicitly from the Graduation, in tourism promotion discourse. This study built a specific corpus compiled from articles promoting nature on the official website of Indonesian tourism (OWIT). Using Sketch Engine and Wmatrix5, this study aims to identify 1) the types of nature offered on the Indonesian tourism promotion website, 2) quantification and its grammatical realization used in the promotion, and 3) attitudes amplified from the graduation strategy. Findings reveal that Indonesian tourism is promoted mainly by its topography, flora and fauna, nature-based activity, and weather and climate. Graduation is realized through diverse grammatical realizations, such as the specific and non-specific numerals and infused amounts, in order to quantify nature’s values/ numbers, extent, and mass/ presence. The concordance study indicates that upscaling quantification emphasizes Indonesia’s natural beauty and richness, while downscaling quantification promotes the endangered species in Indonesia’s national parks. From an ecological lens, the Graduation is employed to amplify readers’ Appreciation of the country’s valuation and composition. Quantification has also been proven to be a productive persuasive device in tourism promotion that functions to materialize and commodify nature. Notwithstanding the corpus size, this study contributes to tourism promotion discourse and ecolinguistics studies.

Abstract

Toponyms or place names are important linguistic facts. Toponyms can record people's spatial awareness of the surrounding environment. This article explores local ecological knowledge in toponyms in the Waduk Jatigede area. In this area, there are 28 villages from 5 sub-districts affected by the construction of Waduk Jatigede. Data collection in this study used participant observation and interview methods. The data analysis procedure includes four stages: (1) transcription of recorded data; (2) categorizing data from the transcription of recordings or notes based on the classification of toponymy aspects; (3) interpretation of local knowledge about ecology in toponymy; (4) concluding. The results show that polymorphemic toponyms dominate toponyms in the Jatigede Reservoir area. In addition, toponyms in the Waduk Jatigede area are also dominated by toponyms with physical aspects, including hydrological, geomorphological, and biological-ecological characteristics. This finding shows that Sundanese people have a close relationship with the surrounding nature. This local ecological knowledge contains Sundanese people's ecological awareness about the Waduk Jatigede area's ecological characteristics, including water, soil, flora and fauna. This local ecological knowledge is useful as a policy recommendation for natural and ecological disaster mitigation in environmental development, which is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Disagreement is a difference of opinion expressed differently based on the media used. Based on this phenomenon, it is interesting to define an expression of disagreement and the types of discourse that trigger it on Facebook, which tends to be accessible and not distant. Analyzing these two things is interesting and important as something new in pragmatic studies. This study aims to define the expression of disagreement and describe the types of messages that get a lot of disagreement responses in the ICJ Facebook group. The current research utilized a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data in this study are messages and comments that contain disagreement in the ICJ Facebook group. Data collection was carried out using documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique utilizes semantic and pragmatic perspectives. The results showed that the expression of disagreement could be defined as a negative expression expressed verbally as a reaction when the speaker opposes or denies the opponent's proposition or vice versa in a communication context. Posts or messages that get a lot of disagreement responses have the following characteristics, 1) the topics discussed relate to the disclosure of social problems from a personal point of view, 2) aim to assess social phenomena or as social criticism, 3) type of expressive and persuasive discourse.

Abstract

The borrowing of foreign lexicon in Indonesian is well documented. However, to date, research on Korean loanwords has remained unavailable. Against the backdrop of the Korean Wave (hallyu), this paper discusses the phonological adaptation of Korean loanwords in Indonesian and the way these loanwords contribute to the Indonesian lexical landscape. By collecting data on Korean culture from a selection of Instagram and Twitter (now X) accounts from the Indonesian community, our corpus shows that besides nouns, Korean loanwords also include adjectives and verbs. We identified 52 loanwords related to the domain of popular culture, including film, music, and food. The different phonological systems of Korean and Indonesian determine the assimilation processes in the Indonesian vocabulary. Since this paper involves big data stored in a corpus, it has the capacity to provide new insight in the ways Korean loanwords and their phonological structure are integrated in Indonesian and become linguistically acceptable.

Abstract

The article reveals the linguistic landscape study of angkringan names in Semarang City. It covers language preference, language inference, and language preservation on signages. Researchers collected 140 pictures of angkringan signages from 10 sub-districts of Semarang. Observation and interviews are also conducted to obtain comprehensive linguistic landscape data. Qualitative analysis indicates that there are two naming patterns: monolingual and bilingual. The monolingual analysis identifies that the most preferred language code is Javanese, followed by Indonesian, English, and Sanskrit. Meanwhile, in the bilingual pattern, the dominant language combination used is Indonesian-Javanese, followed by Javanese-English, Javanese-Indonesian, Javanese-Dutch, Sanskrit-English, and Sundanese-English. Meanwhile, angkringan names draw references from diverse sources, including people, places, slogans, hopes, objects, menus, mythological figures, and numbers. In terms of language preservation, this study identified that Javanese is predominantly used on angkringan signages for small-scale entrepreneurs as an identity, while big-scale entrepreneurs focus on attracting customers. This implies that economic factors are one of the driving forces behind the use of Javanese on signs.

Abstract

The current article discusses a linguistic phenomenon, particularly, the use of bikago beautified style, which has been classified as being separate from teineigo since 2007. The discussion covers the forms of this particular linguistic style and the background of its emergence. This research was conducted because, to date, Japanese language studies pertaining to this specific style mostly consisted of researches that are based on spoken data analysis. This is a descriptive-qualitative study. Data were collected from instruction labels of food, beverage, and pharmaceutical products in Japanese provided on the packages of relevant products. Data were gathered based on the content of bikago style element found within a speech. Speeches that do not contain any bikago style element were not included as research data. Research results shows that the number of bikago terms being used on relevant products is very scarce, only consisting of a few words, yet they are distributed in various elements of usage instruction discourse. gb777gb777slot gacorgb777gb777GB777GB777slot gacorslot gacor

Abstract

Javanese culture is widely characterized as a high-context society that prioritizes indirect communication to maintain social harmony. This study empirically tests this long-held assumption by examining the pragmatic structure of directive speech acts in contemporary data. Data were drawn from twenty short films produced by the Provincial Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and analyzed using a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods approach. Contrary to the classical paradigm, the analysis reveals a prevalent use of head act-oriented structures, indicating a preference for direct communication. This directness is frequently strategically combined with mitigating adjuncts, while the use of aggravating adjuncts is rare. Furthermore, a tendency toward simple pragmatic structures highlights a cultural emphasis on clarity and efficiency. These findings challenge the notion that indirectness is a necessary component of politeness. Instead, they suggest that in modern Javanese communication, directness and politeness operate as complementary, rather than contradictory, goals. Concise and direct utterances are not inherently impolite but are interpreted within the governing sociocultural and hierarchical context. This finding also indicates a sociolinguistic shift towards more direct and effective communication due to modernization.

Abstract

The expanding use of the word halal in Indonesian has become a prominent phenomenon. Despite this development, empirical diachronic studies that systematically examine the evolution of the word halal in Indonesian public discourse remain limited. This study addresses two research questions: (1) How has the use of the word halal evolved in Republika.co.id from 2010 to 2022? Moreover, (2) What topics were discussed in relation to the use of the word halal during this period? Adopting a corpus-based approach, this study utilises the corpus analysis tool Sketch Engine to examine a corpus of 1,132 news articles on halal published by Republika.co.id between 2010 and 2022. The findings indicate that the use of the word halal increased markedly, particularly during the final four years (2019–2022). This surge coincided with several key policy initiatives introduced by the Indonesian government, including the implementation of mandatory halal certification, the establishment of halal industrial zones, and the promotion of a broader halal ecosystem. Collocation analysis further reveals a notable expansion in the discourse’s thematic scope. While early coverage primarily focused on halal products, discussions gradually shifted toward broader themes related to the halal industry and halal economy. Overall, this study provides an empirical account of the diachronic transformation in the use of the word halal in mass media and demonstrates a correlation between government policy agendas and the dynamics of public discourse.
