Abstract

Javanese is a member of the Western Austronesian language, a sub-family of the Austronesian language family. Languages in this sub-family are known in linguistic literature as having an exceptional feature in their voice system among the world’s languages and continue to be exciting issues in the theory of syntax. This paper investigates the voice system in Javanese and focuses on the locative imperative clauses’ voice system. Data are collected from the Javanese spoken in Yogyakarta at the ngoko level. This study demonstrates that Javanese has five variants of locative imperative clauses: intransitive locative imperatives, active locative imperatives, passive locative imperatives, locative imperatives with actor focus, and locative imperatives with locative focus. The five variants of imperatives reflect the voice system of the clauses. There are two voice systems of locative imperatives in Javanese: a two-voice system and a multiple-voice system. Intransitive locative imperatives, active locative imperatives, and passive locative imperatives are imperatives within the two-voice or active-passive voice systems. The other two variants of locative imperatives, the locative imperatives with actor focus and the locative imperatives with locative focus, are types of locatives imperatives within the multiple voice system. The existence of the two voice systems in Javanese indicates that this language is in the process of changing from a multiple-voice language to a two-voice language.

Abstract

Research in linguistics related to sexual harassment on social media is still very limited. The research found was limited to analysis in the form of verbal text, without visual material. This study is needed in the field of linguistics, especially forensic linguistics. To respond to these conditions, a study is needed that can assist efforts to examine language data academically in linguistics. This study aims to discuss the relationship between verbal and visual modes in Twitter posts that are considered to contain sexual harassment. The method used in this study was qualitative methods with two data collection techniques, namely listening and recording. The data in this study is in the form of screenshots of uploads sourced from Twitter with indications of sexual harassment. The analytical tool used in this study is Halliday's SFL theory to analyze verbal modes and Kress &Van Leeuwen's visual grammar theory to analyze visual modes. The results showed that the verbal and visual modes in the upload become a unity of elements that build meaning. Both work together to convey a related message, namely the existence of sexual harassment. The analysis and results of this study are expected to be a reference in forensic linguistic studies.

Abstract

Humans as living beings are very productive in creating imitations of sounds from activities, feelings, and circumstances they experience. This study aims to describe the form, meaning, and function of human onomatopoeia contained in the local Webtoon Pasutri Gaje Season 1 by Annisa Nisfihani. The theory used in this study is Hanada's (2016) onomatopoeia theory. The data is in the form of onomatopoeias produced by humans, either from activities, feelings, or circumstances. The data were collected using documentation technique with four stages of analysis, namely (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) data conclusion. Based on the analysis of onomatopoeic forms and meanings, the results of this study show that (1) different onomatopoeic forms often have the same meaning, but are used in the same context of use and (2) the same onomatopoeic forms often have different meanings and describe different contexts. This shows that the meaning of human onomatopoeia is highly dependent on the context in which it is used. Meanwhile, the function of human onomatopoeia in this Webtoon is expressive.

Abstract

The emergence of ecolinguistics in the early 1970s has expanded into various academic discussions, including Indonesia’s context. Many articles of ecolinguistics can be found massively online, yet only few of them are stored in an international database, such as Scopus and DOAJ. This article attempts at (re)defining ecolinguistic concept in Indonesia’s research by taking 19 sample articles indexed in doaj.org. To collect the data, the researches searched the keywords “ecolinguistics” and “Indonesia” and applied the systematic review method by comparing the definition of ecolinguistics, its methods, and findings of ecolinguistic research in Indonesia. There are found some definitions of ecolinguistics: the study of language diversity, local wisdoms, language endangerment, and ecological awareness. Based on those findings, this article tries to redefine the concept of ecolinguistics as an approach that does not only take data from ecological issues, but also use ecological approach to analyze texts. By doing so, it is expected to figure out critical studies that find out ecological effects from the linguistic strands from various sources to offer more ecological understandings.

Abstract

This paper discuss imperative sentences with a patient focus in Javanese, a type of imperatives that are not found in all languages of the world. Data are taken from the Javanese spoken in Yogyakarta and its surounding areas and analyzed using the distribution method by looking at the position of elements focused on the sentence structure and morphological markers on the verbs. The discussion is presented in the framework of voice system of Austronesian languages. It will be shown that there are two types of imperatives with a patient focus in Javanese. They are marked by different affixes on the verb of sentences: the suffix –(n)en and the prefix di-. Typologically the two types of imperatives come from different voice system. The imperatives which are marked by the suffix –(n)en on the verbs come from a multiple voice system and the imperatives which are marked by the prefix di- on the verb come from a two-voice system. Based on this evidence, I argue that Javanese has two types of voice system of imperatives: a multiple voice system and a two-voice system and it indicates that Javanese is being changing form a multiple voice language type to a two voice active-passive language type.

Abstract

This study examines metaphorical adjectives describing humans in Javanese. The metaphorical adjective is literally used to describe nouns other than humans but figuratively used to describe humans. This study aims to describe metaphorical adjectives used to characterize humans figuratively based on their meaning type. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in this study are adjectives used to describe humans in Javanese metaphorically. The data corpus is taken from written and oral sources. The written sources are taken from the Dictionary of Baoesastra Djawa written by Poerwadarminta dan Javanese Dictionary written by the Language Center Team of Yogyakarta and a Javanese short story from the anthology of Javanese literature short story 2007 Kidung Megatruh (22 short stories) and short story of Yogyakarta Javanese in 2000-2010 (87 short stories). Data analysis techniques are inductive, with identification and classification techniques following research objectives. Based on the result, 43 adjectives are used to describe humans with metaphorical meanings. The adjectives are divided into six types: adjectives of positive character marker, negative character marker, positive mental condition marker, negative mental condition marker, positive physical condition marker, and negative physical condition marker. The use of metaphorical adjectives explaining humans in Javanese shows that the creativity of Javanese linguists is good at utilizing existing lexicons to express ideas by distorting their meaning without creating a new lexicon.

Abstract

Potentially, both inclusivism and exclusivism can emerge from Islam itself. To an extreme point, inclusive point of view underline the importance to apprecieate religious pluralism and to avoid truth claims. To the other extreme, exlusive point of view suspect and even reject pluralism and upholds truth claims. Islam may be presented by the two extremes, and it is not only because of defferent emphasis in reading the holy texts, but also because of defferent methodologies of interpretation being employed. This paper discusses different methodologi of interpretation that determinate significantly the meaning of dīn, millah and syarī’ah and how they are related. The one that uses the relation of synonymy avoid ta’ārud al-adillah reading (the dispute among axioms) so leads to inclusive comprehension. The other using the relation of hyponymy between din and syarī’ah leads to ta’arud reading, uses of nasikh wa al-mansūkh method (abrogation), and so leads to exclusive comprehension.

Abstract

Deteriorating air quality conditions elicited public concern, prompting the Indonesian government to implement a series of legislative measures aimed at mitigating Jakarta's air pollution. Media discourse informed both air pollution policy and the government as the predominant source. This research aims to analyze the representation of ideology in the Jakarta air pollution news corpus. The study employs a descriptive and qualitative methodology, utilizing Stibbe's ecolinguistic model. Data processing is facilitated by AntConc 4.2.4 for mapping ambivalent language forms in concordance. The analysis revealed that Jakarta's air pollution is portrayed in various ways, including activities such as public or private electric transportation, vehicle emission tests, and wearing masks, as solutions to air pollution. The utilization of rain, plants, and technology are also presented as solutions to air pollution. The representation of solutions is evidenced by seventeen data points exhibiting ambivalent aspects similar to Stibbe's model, with nine from CNN and eight from government sources.
