Public figures tend to use social media platforms to apologize in public due to its practicality and effectiveness. Although public apology as a social phenomenon has been extensively studied in the English-speaking world, Indonesian public apologies have less attention from linguists and management scientists. This paper examines the speech act of apologizing made by Indonesian Public Figures in 2020 by analyzing videos collected from YouTube. The data of the study was analyzed based on Murphy’s framework of formulate (2015). Findings include that Indonesian public figures prefer all three categories of apology strategy: explicit, conventional-indirect, and non-conventional-indirect strategies. Mover, explanation, account, or excuse become the most frequent used to express their apology. It was then followed by expression of lack of intent and statement of repair. Keywords: Pragmatic, Apology, Indonesia, Youtube, Public Figures

Abstract

Being non-native English-speaking teachers (non-NESTs) comes with challenges and opportunities. The purpose of this research was to explore the teaching experience and practices of Indonesian teachers who teach English and how they see themselves as NNESTs teaching in northeastern Thailand. Guided by qualitative approach of interview research inquiry by Kvale (2007), six Indonesian teachers who teach English in northeastern Thailand were invited and took part in two phases of interview sessions. The findings show that to teach English in Thailand, Indonesian teachers were driven by various internal motivation including expanding teaching experience, receiving recognition, and getting higher salary. During their job assignment as English teachers at primary/secondary in several districts in northeastern region, they have encountered bittersweet life and teaching experiences. Language barrier is one of the prominent problems since Indonesian teachers and Thai students speak different languages. Moreover, unavailability of teaching sources and student factors have become the next challenge to cope. Application of various teaching strategies and adjustment to student levels can be a realistic solution to maintain professional teaching service. Furthermore, they also admitted that Thai students and other Thai teachers are welcomed, and they felt positive acceptance. They also mentioned that their presence as Indonesian non-NESTs teaching English in Thailand indicates that Indonesian teachers have international qualification to be English teachers at international level.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic forced lecturers and students to stay at home and manage online remote teaching systems. This current study explored the adaptations to emergency online teaching on EFL Academic Writing courses in the aspect of practices and perception from both lecturers and students at university. A mixed-method approach was selected using an exploratory sequential design. The participants were a lecturer and 51 university students who registered for the course at a private university in Jakarta. The instruments were the lecturer’s documents from 14 meetings and an online questionnaire sequentially. The data were then analyzed using descriptive as well as thematic qualitative data analysis. The findings showed that the lecturer’s adaptations consisted of digital learning platforms, material delivery, teaching methods/techniques, and writing activity and assessment.  Some students assumed that attending online remote teaching was confusing, while others had no adjustments and called it a new and valuable experience. In general, they perceived positive perceptions toward teaching’s practices. WhatsApp mobile messenger with content materials in PDF format using Genre-based approach considers being very effective in managing Academic Writing courses for emergency remote teaching during the pandemic.
