Abstract

Education in the 21st century emphasizes active student engagement, where intrinsic motivation is expected to emerge as observable cognitive participation, particularly through verbal discussions. However, although Lesson Study (LS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) are widely reported to strengthen intrinsic motivation, high motivation does not always translate into high verbal cognitive engagement, indicating a potential mismatch influenced by non-cognitive factors. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Lesson Study (LS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in fostering students' intrinsic motivation and identify non-cognitive factors that influence the mismatch between motivation and verbal cognitive engagement. This descriptive study used mixed methods, involving 25 students of the Physics Education Study Program. Data were collected through motivation questionnaires (quantitative) and transcripts of group discussion recordings (qualitative) during the implementation of Lesson Study and PBL and processed using descriptive statistics. The quantitative results showed that students' learning motivation was in the high category across all indicators, including persistence, interest, achievement, and independence. However, the qualitative results of the transcripts of verbal cognitive engagement revealed significant variation, where some students exhibited low verbal activity despite having high motivation levels. This inconsistency suggests that high intrinsic motivation has not yet fully translated into active cognitive engagement due to the intervention of affective, social, and situational factors. Thus, Lesson Study and PBL have proven effective in fostering intrinsic motivation, but strengthening collaborative strategies is necessary to ensure optimal cognitive engagement for each individual.

Abstract

This study examines changes in students’ perceptions and technology acceptance in science education following the implementation of Canva in a school characterized by limited digital access. Grounded in the TAM, the research positions perception as a mediating construct linking digital media use to learning experience quality within a digital divide context. A descriptive pre–post survey design was employed involving 41 seventh and eighth-grade students at a public junior secondary school. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire administered before and after the integration of Canva into science instruction. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to compare mean scores across the two measurement phases. The findings indicate a substantial positive shift in students’ perceptions after the implementation of Canva, particularly in perceived usefulness, perceived understanding of abstract concepts, and affective engagement. These results suggest that exposure to structured visual and multimodal learning materials may enhance students’ acceptance of educational technology, especially in contexts where prior access to digital tools is limited. The study contributes theoretically by extending discussions on perception and technology acceptance within underrepresented educational settings affected by the digital divide. Methodologically, it demonstrates the relevance of pre–post descriptive approaches for capturing perceptual shifts in small-scale contexts. However, the study is limited by its reliance on self-reported data and the absence of inferential statistical testing. Future research is recommended to employ longitudinal or quasi-experimental designs and to integrate measures of academic achievement to better understand the long-term impact of digital media implementation in science education.

Abstract

Abstract. Dual role conflict and work stress have become global issues in the public sector, affecting productivity, psychological resilience, and the quality of services provided by government employees. In Indonesia, particularly in local government institutions such as the Government of Tarakan City, administrative demands, high workloads, and the dynamics of public service increasingly elevate the risk of role conflict and work stress, which ultimately can reduce job satisfaction and the performance of civil servants. This phenomenon underscores the importance of research to identify how role pressures and stress influence the performance of public officials within the context of local bureaucracy. This study aims to analyze the influence of dual role conflict and work stress on the performance of civil servants, as well as examine the role of job satisfaction as a mediating variable in this relationship. By integrating perspectives from role theory and work stress theory, this research seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the psychological mechanisms that affect the performance of public sector employees. The research method uses a quantitative approach with a survey conducted among civil servants of the Government of Tarakan City. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the direct and indirect relationships between variables. Variable measurements used standardized instruments that have been validated in various previous studies. The results show that dual role conflict has a positive effect on work stress and indirectly decreases the performance of civil servants through reduced job satisfaction. In addition, work stress has a significant influence on employee satisfaction and performance. Job satisfaction plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between work stress and performance, emphasizing the importance of psychological aspects as key mechanisms determining civil servant productivity. These findings provide implications for local governments to design stress management policies, employee welfare programs, and interventions that support role balance, so that job satisfaction and civil servant performance can be sustainably improved.

Abstract

This study examines the shifting career preferences of Indonesian youth, who are increasingly moving from formal employment toward informal and flexible work models. Using a mixed-methods approach that integrates national statistics from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), regional survey data, and literature analysis, the study identifies key socio-economic and cultural drivers behind this transition. Findings are organized into three themes: the growing prevalence of informal work among young people, rising demand for flexibility in income generation and work arrangements, and the broader socio-economic implications for stability, skills development, and long-term employability. The study concludes that this shift reflects both structural labour-market changes and evolving youth aspirations. It recommends strengthening policy support for youth entrepreneurship, integrating flexible-work competencies into education and training, and improving social protection mechanisms to ensure sustainable participation in an increasingly informal economy.
