Abstract

There were three pilars of  palm oil plantation in Indonesia, state-owned large estates and private estates which total extensive oil palm plantations area in 2005 were 5.445 thausands  hectares with 12.452 thausands million tons production crude palm oil. The composition of the plantation farmers  area was 40,02 %, national large plantations was about  13,96 %, and  48,68  % for private estates.There are two types of Management of their field, nucleous estate smallholders  (NES) and farmers. Unfortunately farmers better than independent farmers in managing the  estates, because there was cooparation between the farmers with the nucleous companies. The PIR system stated that the nucleous  plantation companies were useful in developing and crops farmers market assigning, While the farmers must manage his estates well and market the results through the company's nucleous. Sustainability analysis conducted by the method of Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS) approach  with Rap-Insus palm oil techniques (Rapid Appraisal-Index Sustainability of palm oil Management). Analysis of key factors of sustainability management performed a prospective analysis of the sensitivity factors (leverage factor) of the MDS and the factors from the analysis of stakeholders' needs. The results showed that the status of sustainability of palm oil management in   PT.Perkebunan Nusantara VII Muara Enim, South Sumatera)was quite sustainable with a multidimensional index of 67,67.

Abstract

Saturated soil culture (SSC) is a promising technology for cultivating soybeans in acidic soil in tidal swamps. The objectives of this study were to measure nutrient uptake in the soybean plant using a saturated soil culture technique and to assess the impact of ameliorant addition in the form of rice biomass and rice hull on soybean yield. Two factors, rice biomass, and rice hull ash, were used in a split plot factorial design to set up the experiment. Four levels in the main factor included without biomass immersion, one immersion of short (3 cm above the root) rice stubble, one immersion of regular (panicle harvested only) rice straw, and two immersions of regular rice straw cut in the soil. The four levels in the subfactor were 0 t ha-1, 0.25 t ha-1, 0.50 t ha-1, and 0.75 t ha-1 of rice hull ash doses. Ameliorant in the form of biomass and rice husk increases soil quality in tidal swamps by enhancing pH, soil nutrients (N, P, K, S), CEC, cations, and base saturation, also reducing toxic compounds and improving soil texture. Application of ameliorant also increases soybean nutrient uptake and eventually increases the productivity of soybeans in tidal swamp acid soil. The best treatment of the first and second factors was one immersion of biomass with a regular cut of rice straw and 0.5 t ha-1 ash rice hull ash addition to the tidal swamp soil, respectively.

Abstract

Determination of recommendations for phosphorus (P) based on soil tests for tomato in Andisol has not been done in Indonesia. Beginning with the making of P soil status in IPB Research Station Pasirsarongge Cianjur and followed by a correlation test in PKHT IPB greenhouse Tajur Bogor West Java, from November 2015 to April 2016. The objective was to select the best extraction method of P Andisols for tomato. This research used a single-location approach; with a randomized block design. The treatments were soil P status by application of phosphoric acid solution (H3PO4) with five rates of P : 0, ¼,X, ½X, ¾X, and X. X was the P rate of 2240 kg P ha-1 was applied to achieve maximum P concentration in the soil. H3PO4 solution was applied to the bed surface and incubated for 4 months to obtain different P nutrient statuses. A study of the Correlation test conducted in the greenhouse used the 4 month incubated soil. Analysis of soil P using five extraction methods: Bray 1 (HCl 5N), HCl 25%, Morgan Wolf (NaC2H3O2.3H2O), Mechlich (HCl 0.05N + H2SO4 0.025N) dan NH4OAc (NH4OAc, pH 7). The results showed differences in response of plant height and biomass dry weight on nutrient status of Andisols P. Quandratic response pattern was shown in tomato plant height at 7 weeks after planting and biomass dry weight. The best Andisols P extraction method for tomato is Morgan Wolf, with a correlation coefficient (r) was 0.79. Keywords: biomass, extraction method, greenhouse, H3PO4, Morgan Wolf

Abstract

Total content of potassium in smectitic soils is commonly high, however its availability for plant growth is frequently problem because it is fixed at interlayer space of 2:1 type of clay mineral. The research was  aimed to study the sorption and effect of Na+, NH +, and Fe3+  on soil available K at smectitic soils. It  was conducted in Laboratory of Research and Soil Test, Indonesian Soil Research Institute by using four of soil samples taken from Bogor (Typic Hapludalfs), Cilacap (Chromic Endoaquerts), Ngawi (Typic Endoaquerts), and Blora (Typic Haplustalfs). Incubation experiment used Randomized Completely Block Design, 4 treatments, and 5 replications. The treatment consisted of without cation, application of Na+, NH +, and Fe3+ from NaCl, NH Cl, and FeCl respectively at 50% of maximum adsorption level. The results showed that soil sorption, buffering capacity, and maximum sorption of Fe3+ were higher than NH + and Na+, while the variables of NH + were similar with those of Na+. Among the treatments,bond energy constant was in order of  Na+  > Fe3+  > NH +  at Alfisols and it was in order of  Fe3+  > Na+  > NH +  at Vertisols. Among the soils, the soil sorption, buffering capacity, and maximum sorption were in order of Vertisols > Alfisols. The application of Na+ significantly increased soil soluble-K at Chromic Endoaquerts and Typic Endoaquerts; NH + significantly increased soil exchangeable K at Typic Hapludalfs, Chromic Endoaquerts, and Typic Endoaquerts; while Fe3+ significantly increased both variables in all tested soils.

Abstract

Peat soil amelioration has important role on improvement of soil peat fertility such as  on increasing soil pH,  reducing organic acid and toxic ions, and also increasing nutrients availability.  Soil amelioration with polyvalent cations (Fe Al Cu Zn) namely slag, lateritic soils, and river mud are effectively reducing harmful effect of phenolic acid. The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of soil amelioration on peat soil chemical properties, optimum temperature amelioran tras and dolomite to increase Si concentration in peat soil, also to determine the effect of soil amelioration on increasing crop productivity (both biomass and yield).  The study was consisted of two sets of experiments, namely soil incubation in the laboratory and greenhouse experiment with 4 replications of CRD (complete randomized design) plot design.  The result of the study showed that  the application of slag and dolomite are significantly different to increase pH, base saturation, and (Ca, Mg) content, meanwhile slag application was more complex and stable on improving chemical properties of peat soil.  Slag was also improving pH, KB, and Ca, Fe content  as well as silica and ash.  Tras and dolomite burning were not significantly different on increasing silica in peat soil. Slag application was significantly increased both dried crop biomass and yield on rice.  The best ameliorant was slag compared to tras, dolomite, and mixed tras dolomit with slag.Keywords: Ameliorant, organic acids, paddy, peat soil

Abstract

Arable soils located in the vicinity of urban and industrial area are considered vulnerable to heavy metals pollution.  Chemical inactivation, an in situ remediation method that used inexpensive chemicals to reduce pollutant solubility in polluted soil, was examined on a Cd-spiked arable soil. The study was aimed at to investigate the effectiveness of ameliorants and fertilizers normally recommended for crop cultivation, using tomato as the test plant, from the point of view to reduce soil Cd extractability and plant Cd concentration. A 100-day greenhouse experiment in completely randomized de­sign consisting of three rates of rationale dosage of ameliorants and fertilizers (RDAF) [0, 50, 100%] and four levels of soil Cd spike [0, 10, 20, 40 mg Cd kg-1 soil, using 3CdSO4.8H2O] in triplicate was conducted. The 100% rate of RDAF applied was: 4 ton dolomite ha-1, 30 ton cow dung ha-1, 150 kg N ha-1 (½ Urea + ½ Ammonium Sulfate), 150 kg P2O5 ha-1 (SP-36) and 100 kg K2O ha-1 (KCl). Significant reductions in soil extractable Cd (CdNH4OAc-EDTA) [from 13.35 to 8.77 mg kg-1, 34%] and plant shoots-Cd (Cdps) [from 8.66 to 5.46 μg g-1, 37%] were measured at 100% RDAF treatment as compared to the control soil, indicating the occurrence of an in situ soil Cd inactivation and plant element selective-uptake phenomenon. Multiple regression analysis that incorporating all 36 data pairs resulted in the following equations: (1) soil CdNH4OAc-EDTA = – 0.18 pHH2O + 0.21 PBray#1 + 0.51 organic-C – 0.57 exch.-Mg + 0.65 Cdaqua regia (R2 = 0.76), and (2) Cdps = 0.08 Nps – 0.17 Kps – 0.19 Mgps – 0.24 Pps + 0.27 Sps – 0.41 Caps (R2 = 0.54, 3 outliers removed). These results suggest that a proper amelioration and fertilization program may be prospective to be recommended as a low-cost Cd pollution remediation strategy for arable soils

Abstract

The use of organic materials aimed at reducing the dependence on inputs such as chemical fertilizers can contribute to sustainability and improving the low N fertilizer efficiency of rice plants in paddy soils.  Therefore, better understanding of N transformation in flooded soils, particularly the microbial transformation of N-organic amendments to plant-available N and gaseous N forms is needed for most efficient use of soil and organic materials N, for determining the potential of denitrification and for aiding in the selection of N management practices for sustainable agriculture.  The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and glasshouse of Soil Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University.  An incubation experiment was conducted in the laboratory at room temperature during 120 d to analyze the mineralization-immobilization patterns in flooded soils amended with rice straw, rice straw composts 4 mo and 8 mo and their combinations with urea.  The first time of soil flooding, mineral N (N-NH4+ and N-NO3-) concentrations in all of the amended soils sharply decreased and those gradually increase since 7 d of incubation.  It might be due to the reduction of N-NO3- to N2O and N2, and immobilization.  This data was consistent with the data of N2O emission derived from pot experiment.  The high emission of N2O was observed at the first time of soil flooding of the amended soils, and the soils added rice straw showed the largest N2O emission than the other treatments. It might be due to the change of soil condition from aerobic to anaerobic condition, and the higher decomposable C as energy source for denitrifyer contained in rice straw.  Regardless the organic materials added to soils, the longer anaerobic condition, nitrification sharply decreased, so that nitrate availability limits denitrifications.decreased, so that nitrate availability limits denitrifications.

Abstract

The Effects of Various Water Table Depths on CO2 Emission at Oil Palm Plantation on West Aceh Peat (EP  Handayani, M van Noordwijk, K Idris,  S Sabiham and S Djuniwati):  Changes in the depth of water table influenced carbon cycling in peatlands, and affected the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide.  The effects of depth of water tables in oil palm plantations on the emission of CO2 were studied. CO2 emissions of peatland were measured in Meulaboh, West Aceh using cylindrical chambers and  air samples from the chambers were analyzed by gas chromatography. Five-point transects perpendicular to drainage canals provided variation in the depth of water tables for the samples. Data from oil palm fields were compared to data from an adjacent swamp forest. The data confirmed that  the increasing depth of water table was accompanied by the increasing in microbial activity that was measured by CO2 emission.  The CO2 emissions from chambers with additional root zones were higher than from bulk soil chambers between one to four times.

Abstract

Loss of soil organic matter can be caused by erosion triggered by soil compaction and high rainfall. The aims of  the study were to determine (1) the loss of soil organic matter, lignocellulose, and soil microbial population due to erosion and (2) the contribution of organic matter from oil palm fronds. In the current study, the erosion plots were built on the accessible inter-row (gawangan hidup) and inaccessible inter-row (gawangan mati) of oil palm plantations located at the slope of 6-10% and >10%. Soil organic matter, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents and total soil microbial populations were measured in the sediments collected from the erosion plots. The results showed that the loss of organic matter was higher in the accessible inter-row than that in the inaccessible inter-row. The addition of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose from oil palm fronds into the soil are 2.06 Mg ha-1 yr-1, 1.13 Mg ha-1 yr-1 and 1.02 Mg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. Total bacterial population in the sediments taken from the accessible inter-row was higher than that from the inaccessible inter-row, while the total fungal population in the sediments from the inaccessible inter-row was higher than that from the accessible inter-row.
