Abstract

This study was aimed to explain the self-concept of a prisoner who jailed for premeditated murder and factors that  influence self changes. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used. One participant and three significant others were involved in this study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using Thematic Analysis (TA). The result of this study indicates that there is a change of participant’s self-concept as the impacts of his murder act and his imprisonment. Before the murder case, the participant experienced some degrees of incongruence between actual and ideal self. After the murder case and his life in prison, the participant’s self incongruence tends to decrease. There are  several  factors that influence the participant’s self-congruence, namely: social supports they received both psychologically and materially from relatives and  friends, the ability to learn from his past experience, having self-acceptance and gratitude shown by  accepting the punishment and sentence in the prison, and good adjustment during his life in prison.

Full-face veil is a head scarf with a face cover which only leave eyes exposed used by Muslim women as accompanied with wearing long hijab and black dominated clothes covering body. A full-face veil has some kinds such as niqab and burqa. Women with full-face veil generally become the target of stigma. This study explores full-face veiled women’s experiences including their motivation that encourage them to wear it, the stigma they face, and how they cope with the stigma. Five women who wear full-face veils involved in this study. Data collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The result shows that wearing full-face veil is motivated primarily by religious loyalty and for guarding them from sexual objectification. Their strong religious loyalty make them ready to face stigma labelled by their surrounding society such as accused as a fanatic,a member of  terrorist group,  and being avoided by their surrounding people. The strategies they use to cope with the stigma cover internal and external strategies. The internal strategies consist of ignoring the stigma and taking the view that the stigma is caused by the surrounding society’s misunderstanding. Meanwhile, the external strategies include of taking effort to clarify and give the explanation to revise the misunderstanding,as well as participating in neighborhood activities.

Abstract

Becoming a lesbian as well as a follower of a religion that opposes homosexuality creates an ambivalent and contradictory experience. This study aims to reveal the personal experiences of four homosexually oriented Christian women in Surabaya. All participants are members of Protestant Christian church congregations with different denominations. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using an interpretive phenomenological analysis technique. The results of this study reveal three main themes, namely: living in two worlds, reconciling homosexual identity with religion, and making life decisions. The first theme reflects the dilemma experienced by the subjects when they realized that their choice as a homosexual was a sin in the perspective of their religion but they could not be able to force themselves to be a heterosexual woman. The second theme describes how the subjects tried to compromise between their homosexual orientation and their religious teachings. The last theme contains how choices are made when homosexual identity cannot be compromised with religious identity. This study concludes that most of the participants are trying to become a devout Christian and at the same time be able to engage in the same-sex sexual orientation. Keywords: homosexual identity, religious identity, lesbian, Christian Abstrak Menjadi lesbian sekaligus menjadi pemeluk suatu agama yang menentang homoseksualitas melahirkan pengalaman yang ambivalen dan kontradiktif.

Abstract

This qualitative study was aimed at exploring the experience of a former member of a terrorist organization in Indonesia who have left his terrorist group and abandoned the extremist ideology. A life history method which focuses on the process of self-change and life transition of the former member of the terrorist group was employed A participant whose age is 40 years old and was a former active member of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), a terrorist group, was recruited. He was captured in 2014 and served a sentence in prison for almost 4 years. He has been involved in counter-terrorism campaign organized by a non-government organization (NGO) since his release from prison until recently. Interviews were conducted to collect data which were then analyzed using a narrative analysis. Some written documents in the forms of articles and a published book produced by the participant as well as online news covering the participant’ stories were also examined. The findings inform how he became involved in the terrorist networks. The need for self-significance and adventurous experience seems to be the main drivers. After his capture, and during his imprisonment, he contemplated his participation in the terrorist networks. His meetings with religious experts and academicians facilitated by prison officers, and his awareness of burden he had inflicted on his family because of his terrorism case had opened his mind. He experienced a turning life moment which made him keeping distance from other terrorist inmates with the risk of receiving negative view from them. After his release, he found passion in writing and eventually reached a NGO and joined it as a credible voice in the campaigns of counter violent extremism through writing and public speaking.

Abstract

The phenomena of suicide attacks targeting overseas people or properties in Indonesia carried out by Indonesian young Muslim seem to be elusive. Different to Palestinian and Middle Eastern contexts where acute conflicts are taking place, there were no celebrations to martyrdom in Indonesia. Majority of Indonesian Muslims not only reject suicide bombing or martyrdom but also condemn it. Indonesian suicide bombers' families, that is not like those of Palestinian martyrs, were not proud of their member's deed and will not get pride from their neighbourhood. They will not get financial advantages because of family's member sacrifice as well. So, what are the reasons that make Indonesian  young Muslims chose to die as a martyr? This article aims to explain the process of radicalisation among young Muslims and reveals the causes and backgrounds of young martyrs in Indonesia based on Social Identity Theory (SIT). Findings of many studies on religious motivated violent attacks are used as comparisons.
