Abstract

River Continuum Concept (RCC) is an approach that describes the dynamic changes in the river system, the changes that occur are physical conditions (order of the river, canopy cover, and land use) and also the structure and function of communities. Functional feeding groups (FFG) of macroinvertebrates are related to environmental gradients in aquatic systems, including river ecosystem attributes. This study aimed to correlate the function of the macroinvertebrate communities with Cisadane’s River headwater conditions based on RCC and also to estimate the attributes of the river ecosystem. This research was conducted in the headwaters of the Cisadane River, West Java-Indonesia. One of Cisadane’s River headwaters was located in Mount Halimun-Salak National Park. Macroinvertebrates were collected from four sites inside the park (stations 1, 2, 3, and 4) and from two sites outside the park (stations 5 and 6). Collections were made twice a month, from April to June 2015 using a Surber sampler. The results showed that shredders and predators were relatively higher at stations inside the national park than at those outside the national park. While scrappers and collectors at stations located inside the national park were relatively lower than at stations outside the park. The value of the P/R ratio showed that all of the stations were heterotrophy. CPOM/FPOM ratio represents that shredder availability is high enough at stations inside the national park. While TFPOM/BFPOM ratio is slightly below the normal threshold value. HSI showed that the condition of the riverbed substrate stability is quite good. Composition changes of macroinvertebrates showed suitability with RCC. River ecosystem attributes and abiotic stream characteristics of Cisadane’s River headwater support macroinvertebrate life and are in accordance with RCC.Keywords:EcologyMacroinvertebrateNational ParkRiparianRiver

Abstract

ABSTRACTCiliwung River is one of the major rivers in the area of West Java which is influenced by organic pollution and mercury contamination. The contamination may disrupt the ecological balance of Trichoptera insect larvae. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal the influence of anthropogenic activities occurring in the Ciliwung River on Trichoptera larvae community. Larvae collection was conducted using surber with five replications per location. Pearson-product moment correlation analysis showed a strong correlation (r> 0.5) between the number of taxa biological metrics, the number of scores Stream Invertebrate Grade Number-Average ( SIGNAL), and % abundance of three dominance Trichoptera larvae with environmental variables, i.e.water temperature, coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, total suspended solids (TDS), C and N in the seston, nitrate, ammonium, orthophosphoric, chemical oxygen demand (COD), metallic mercury in water, sediment, habitat index, distribution of particles, turbidity, chemical Kirchoff index, and index mercury pollution in sediments. Larvae of Trichoptera Helicopsyche, Apsilochorema, Caenota, Ulmerochorema, Chimarra, Antipodoecia, Diplectrona, Anisocentropus, Lepidostoma, and Genus Hel.C tend to be characterized by low organic pollution,% gravel, CPOM, and minimum disruption habitat conditions. While Glososomatidae Genus 1, Cheumatopsyche, Setodes, and Tinodes are relatively more tolerant to organic pollutant, low CPOM, high turbidity, the concentration of mercury in sediment, TDS, and % clay.

Abstract

Comprehensive research was conducted in the mangrove ecosystem of West Muna Regency to investigate the absorption of greenhouse gas (GHG) and degradation of its litter-produced GHG emissions, including N2O and carbon. The ecosystem consisted of four stations, namely Mangrove Maginti (station I), Mangrove Tiworo Tengah (station II), Mangrove Tiworo Islands (station III), and Mangrove Sawerigadi (Station IV). The research aimed to determine emissions and global warming potential (GWP) of N2O gas resulting from the degradation of mangrove litter. The team used a syringe mounted on the hood to collect gas samples and gas chromatography for concentration analysis. The correlation of emissions to environmental variables was analyzed using the Pearson correlation method. The results showed that all species' most significant and smallest average emissions were at stations III and II, with values of 0.0019 mg/m2/hour and 0.0015 mg/m2/hour, respectively. Water temperature showed a weak relationship with N2O emissions, namely r = 0.3511 (p <0.05), while water salinity did not strongly correlate with N2O emissions (r=-0.4471; p<0.05). The average GWP value ranged from 0.3665–0.6314 CO2e mg/m2/hour. Species R. apiculata and B. cylindrica at stations III and II had the largest and smallest GWP values of 0.8392 and 0.1912 CO2e mg/m2/hour, respectively.
