Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the level of convenience, efficiency, and user satisfaction in using the 2024 version of the CheckMark Payroll software using usability testing and cognitive walkthrough methods. This research is focused on key functions such as payroll processes, new employee data input, tax settings, and employee status. Data is collected through direct observation of test scenarios specifically designed to evaluate user interaction with the application interface. The results show that this software has a good level of convenience in basic functions, but there are some shortcomings, such as the absence of distinguishing visual elements on buttons/menus, lack of search/filter features for large-scale data management, and limited flexibility of data input. Additionally, the resulting payslip display does not meet user expectations, and some complex features such as tax settings require a more intuitive interface as well as supporting documentation. The conclusion of this study shows that while CheckMark Payroll is feasible for payroll needs, there is a significant opportunity to improve the user experience through improved visual interfaces, optimized data management, increased flexibility of input systems, and the provision of clearer guidance for complex features. With the implementation of these suggestions, the application is expected to increase efficiency, user satisfaction, and relevance in supporting the needs of small to medium-sized businesses.

Abstract

The Extended Mind concept, as introduced in The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain by Annie Murphy Paul, challenges the traditional view that cognition is solely confined to the brain. This book argues that human thinking extends beyond neural processes, incorporating the body, environment, social interactions, and technology. By understanding these external cognitive factors, individuals and organizations can optimize learning, problem-solving, and productivity. This article reviews the key ideas of the book, highlighting its relevance to education, the workplace, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) as a cognitive extension. The first major aspect, thinking with the body, demonstrates that gestures, movement, and physical interaction enhance cognitive performance, creativity, and problem-solving. In education, incorporating physical movement into learning activities improves comprehension, while in the workplace, structured movement fosters innovation. The second aspect, utilizing space and environment, emphasizes the impact of well-designed physical spaces on cognitive efficiency. Proper lighting, workspace flexibility, and architectural elements influence focus, productivity, and collaboration. The third aspect, social interaction as a thinking tool, underscores how collaboration and discussion accelerate information processing and critical thinking. Work environments that promote interaction enhance decision-making and employee satisfaction. Finally, integrating technology in cognitive systems explores AI's role in augmenting human intelligence rather than replacing it. AI can streamline data analysis and decision-making but must be used as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for human cognition. The book's insights offer valuable recommendations for education and industry. Educational institutions should integrate embodied learning techniques and create interactive learning environments. Organizations should design workspaces that enhance cognitive efficiency and balance AI integration with human expertise. Ultimately, The Extended Mind is a compelling read for educators, professionals, and researchers seeking to understand and enhance human cognition. Its synthesis of neuroscience, psychology, and real-world applications makes it an essential resource in the modern era of AI and digital transformation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the failure of Washington Mutual (WaMu), one of the largest financial institutions in the United States, to maintain the product life cycle (PLC) of its products. Founded in 1889, Washington Mutual grew rapidly through aggressive expansion and a focus on the mortgage market. However, this strategy led to the accumulation of significant risks, primarily through exposure to subprime mortgages. The inability to manage these risks, combined with a lack of innovation in product development and adaptation to market changes, caused WaMu to lose its competitiveness. In addition, a less flexible business model and lack of service diversification reduced the relevance of WaMu's products in an increasingly competitive market. This study identified internal factors such as poor risk management, low operational efficiency, and failure to innovate, as well as external factors such as changing consumer preferences and pressure from competitors, as the main causes of WaMu's failure to maintain the sustainability of its products. In conclusion, Washington Mutual's failure to maintain the PLC cycle reflects the importance of strategic adaptation and continuous innovation in dealing with the dynamics of the banking industry.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic caused the effects of learning activities from home. The phenomenon requires improvisation as a quick response so that the teaching and learning process continues to run and maintains learning motivation, especially in the scope of college. Activities that are assumed to be able to maintain motivation online is to provide tasks in the form of projects or Project Based Learning (PBL) which in this context does not mean eliminating face-to-face activities offline, but in the sense of providing sustainable projects in one semester and staying connected to lecture materials. This PBL is combined with Collaborative Learning (CL) in order to conduct a continuous project review. This research was conducted in Ma Chung University's Information Systems study program for Programming Language courses. The results of this implementation are evaluated by conducting FGD (Focus Group Discussion) in two stages. In the first stage there are some shortcomings that are then corrected by adding the obligation to upload the project to Github and intensify the involvement of lecturers. So in the second stage, FGD results show improved results. The results of the study are generic prescriptions, namely: the implementation of PBL accompanied by a mature plan and preparation, improvisation of PBL accompanied by the application of CL accompanied by the role of lecturers as facilitators need to be evaluated gradually, and the implementation of online collaboration can be applied because students can quickly adapt online. Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive academic review of The Public Innovator’s Playbook: Nurturing Bold Ideas in Government by William D. Eggers and Shalabh Kumar Singh, highlighting its relevance across strategic management, information technology, and socio-political disciplines. Positioned as a critical guide for transforming public sector institutions, the book outlines a structured innovation cycle—comprising idea generation, selection, implementation, and diffusion—intended to embed innovation as a core organizational function rather than an ad hoc response to crises. In terms of strategic management, the book contributes by offering clear frameworks and replicable models that align innovation with institutional missions and managerial planning. From a technological standpoint, it underscores the vital role of digital tools such as blogs, wikis, and peer-to-peer networks in facilitating interdepartmental communication, breaking bureaucratic silos, and accelerating strategy execution. Socially and politically, it promotes participatory governance through citizen engagement, open collaboration, and multi-stakeholder input, supported by examples like the World Bank’s Development Marketplace. Despite these strengths, the book is not without its limitations. It tends to present innovation in an overly idealistic manner, often underplaying structural, political, and contextual barriers to implementation. Furthermore, its reliance on Western-centric case studies may limit applicability in diverse governmental contexts. Nonetheless, the book’s strengths lie in its pragmatic approach, its encouragement of a culture of experimentation, and its integration of cross-sectoral perspectives. It serves as both an operational toolkit and a visionary call for transforming public institutions into adaptive, learning systems. This review concludes that The Public Innovator’s Playbook is a valuable resource for public administrators, scholars, and policymakers who seek to foster sustained innovation within government, and recommends readers approach it with a contextual and critical lens to maximize its strategic and democratic potential.
