Abstract

Anemia remains a significant global health issue. One of the causes is the inadequate of protein and iron intake. So that, erythropoiesis in body less than optimal. Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) can potentially be a functional food that can be included food products because it is rich in nutriens that have a potential impact on anemia. Objective: This scoping review aim was to explores the nutritional composition of Asian swamp eel and its effects on anemia, focusing on mechanisms by which its nutrients influence anemia biomarkers. Methods: This scoping review was performed using the 5-step Arkeys and O’Malelev framework and reported according to PRISMA ScR. Two electronic databases were searched systematically. Article are included if eligible. Results: The result was descriptive and qualitative analyses. A total of 1,245 articles were collected. Key findings suggest that the high protein and vitamin content in eel can significantly improve hemoglobin levels and other anemia indicators. Conclusions: This review highlights the potential of incorporating eel into dietary interventions as a sustainable and effective approach to mitigating anemia prevalence.

Abstract

Date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are by-products of the date processing industry that are often discarded, even though they contain potential antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract from date seeds as a sustainable approach to valorizing food waste. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of the Center for Food and Nutrition Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Date seeds were obtained from small-scale food industries in Klaten, Central Java, then cleaned, dried, macerated, and sieved through mesh 80. A total of 50 grams of powdered seeds were extracted using the Soxhlet method with methanol for 6 hours. The antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH method by reading the absorbance at 515 nm. The results showed DPPH radical inhibition percentages of 58.87% and 48.75% in two replications, with an average of 53.81%. The data were analyzed descriptively based on the percentage of radical scavenging activity. These findings suggest that date seeds possess considerable antioxidant activity and can be utilized as a natural antioxidant source, while also supporting the upcycling of local food waste into functional food ingredients.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to beta cell dysfunction in the pancreas, which prevents the effective production and/or utilization of insulin. Various factors contribute to the increase in the prevalence of diabetes in 2021, with 12.1% of cases occurring in urban areas compared to 8.3% in rural areas. Antidiabetic drugs such as metformin are widely used and have gastrointestinal side effects. Using natural alternatives can provide safe effects. Basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum) and red ginger (Zingiber officinale) are active ingredients that can be used as herbal medicines that are easily found anywhere and have long been known in various traditional medicines for diseases. Usually, people consume them as vegetables and herbal medicine. Basil leaves and red ginger contain natural compounds that are beneficial to health and can boost the immune system, including as antidiabetic agents. The purpose of this review is to present comprehensive information on basil leaves and red ginger that have antidiabetic activity, conducted using a scoping review starting with the PRISMA guidelines. The information for this article was obtained using Google Scholar, Science Direct, Semantic Scholar, and PubMed from 2015 to 2025 resulting in 1229 articles, The results of this review were obtained from 8 articles that were used and met the inclusion criteria. Basil leaves contain flavonoids, phenols, and tannins, which play a role in lowering blood glucose levels by increasing insulin sensitivity and antioxidant activity. Red ginger is rich in gingerol and shogaol, which can lower blood glucose levels and reduce oxidative stress in the body. Both plants have significant potential as natural antidiabetics in lowering blood glucose levels through various mechanisms.
