Abstract

Background: Monitoring the nutritional status of toddlers is a very important thing to do. Calcium is one of the blood parameters that can be assessed, because calcium deficiency will affect the child's linear growth. So far, monitoring of nutritional status is only based on anthropometry and is not followed by assessment of blood parameters. Objectives: This study aims to measure serum calcium levels as a candidate marker in detecting stunting in toddlers. Method: The design of this research is cross sectional with 62 samples of toddlers aged 2-5 years. Data on sample characteristics was obtained through a questionnaire, as for serum calcium levels measurement, venous blood samples were taken and measured with the colorimetric method. The incidence of stunting is obtained based on TB/U measurements and Z-score was calculated using Anthro 1.02 software. Data were then analyzed univariately (frequency distribution) and bivariately (independent t-test and chi-square) using SPSS version 22. Results: Based on anthropometric measurements, it was found that 21 (33.9%) toddlers had stunting, 28 (45.1%) toddlers had low Serum calcium levels and the majority of toddlers (54.9%) had normal serum calcium levels. There was no significant difference (p=0.989) in mean serum calcium levels between stunting and non-stunting toddlers (1.961 ± 0.223 µq/dL vs 1.960 ± 0.175 µq/dL). Bivariate results also showed that there was no significant relationship (p=0.414) between serum calcium levels and the incidence of stunting. Conclusion: Measuring serum calcium levels cannot be used as a candidate marker for detecting stunting in toddlers. Further research is needed with a larger number of samples and measurements of various parameters related to calcium balance.

Abstract

Kata kunci: stunting; deteksi dini; pengetahuan; sikap; keterampilan AbstractStunting is a national health issue that requires interventions from various stakeholders to address it. Stunting is a condition where a child has a height or length below the standard for their age, often caused by chronic malnutrition and suboptimal health conditions during critical growth periods. The Indonesian government has set a target to reduce stunting prevalence through specific and sensitive intervention strategies aimed at improving the health and quality of life of future generations. This community service program was designed to enhance the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of early detection of stunting in toddlers in Thehok Village, Jambi Selatan District, Jambi City. The method employed in this program involved intensive mentoring for 34 village health cadres and officials in Thehok. The mentoring process included several implementation stages: preparation, pre-test to assess initial knowledge levels, educational mentoring, post-test to evaluate knowledge improvement, and sustainability activities to ensure long-term application of the program's results. The evaluation results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 86.4 to 91, and an increase in attitude scores from 12.46 to 14.23, both statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). Participants' skills in early detection of stunting also improved, especially in the use of height measurement tools and in providing education to the community. This indicates positive changes in all three components among the involved cadres and village officials. In conclusion, this program effectively enhanced the capacity of cadres to detect and prevent stunting in Thehok Village, which is expected to contribute to reducing stunting rates in the area. Keywords: stunting; early detection; knowledge; attitudes; skill

Abstract

The important role of health promotion in improving community welfare has encouraged effective innovation to increase nutritional awareness and healthy lifestyle practices. This research explores recent innovations in health promotion strategies, particularly in nutrition and health, to increase awareness and encourage positive behavioral change. Through comprehensive literature analysis, this research identifies and evaluates approaches such as technology interventions, community-based initiatives, and other new strategies. The results show that innovations such as nutrition promotion media (pop-up books, PGS cards, leaflets, nutrition puzzles, and educational videos) as well as active community participation (FGD and lunch menu practices) and empowering health workers and teachers, have succeeded in increasing knowledge. , attitudes and nutritional behavior of the community. Case studies and successful programs show real improvements in community nutrition practices. However, challenges such as limited sample size, short intervention duration, and methodological obstacles need to be overcome. Based on these findings, further research is recommended focusing on: (1) longitudinal research with larger sample sizes to understand long-term impacts; (2) exploration of contextual factors that influence program effectiveness; (3) evaluate the effectiveness of innovation for vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities or people with low education; (4) evaluation of community empowerment strategies and their impact on local health policies; and (5) exploration of cross-sectoral collaboration for holistic and sustainable nutrition promotion programs. These findings provide valuable insights for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, and serve as a comprehensive resource for designing programs that increase nutrition awareness and encourage healthy practices in communities.
