Abstract

Changes in river systems can significantly impact communities, particularly through property and infrastructure losses. This study investigates the fluvial landscape changes of the Bone River and their socio-economic implications in the Gorontalo region from a spatial perspective. The research employs multi-temporal Landsat satellite imagery from the Google Earth Engine platform to analyze environmental dynamics in the study area over the period 1995–2025. The imagery dataset includes Landsat 5 TM (May 5), Landsat 7 ETM+ (February 17), Landsat 8 OLI/TRS (October 19), and Landsat 9 (May 31). The results indicate notable changes in the river’s course. Evidence of erosion and sediment deposition was identified along the Bone River banks. The patterns reveal a tendency toward lateral migration of the river channel, horizontal shifts, and narrowing of downstream segments. Several natural cut-off points have formed, along with shifts in the main channel in the upstream and midstream segments during the 1995–2025 period. The lateral migration of the river channel reached up to 1.2 km northeastward (N60°E), primarily driven by anthropogenic activities such as traditional sand mining along the western banks and the conversion of riparian land into residential areas. From a socio-economic perspective, these river morphological changes pose potential threats to riverside infrastructure and may trigger land-use conflicts, particularly in areas with active sand mining operations

Abstract

The maleo bird (Macrocephalon maleo) is an endemic species of Sulawesi that holds both ecological and symbolic value for local communities. The distribution of the maleo is not only determined by ecological factors such as habitat availability, environmental suitability for nesting, climate change, and predator threats, but is also closely related to the socio-cultural dynamics of the surrounding communities. This article discusses the socio-cultural meaning of the maleo distribution map with an emphasis on a community-based conservation perspective. Through geospatial data and the exploration of local wisdom practices, it is evident that maleo distribution areas often intersect with the social spaces of indigenous communities, settlements, and symbols of collective identity. The presence of the maleo is regarded as part of cultural heritage passed down through generations, giving rise to traditional protection practices, such as restrictions on excessive egg collection or the designation of customary areas as conservation zones. The community-based perspective shows that conservation is not only focused on species preservation but also on strengthening the role of local communities as key actors. By integrating ecological distribution and socio-cultural values, maleo conservation efforts are expected to be more effective, adaptive, and sustainable. This article emphasizes that the success of maleo conservation largely depends on the recognition of the cultural values attached to its distribution as well as the active participation of communities in Sulawesi.

Abstract

Mobile augmented reality (AR) has evolved from an experimental visualization tool into a mature pedagogical medium that redefines spatial learning in geography education. By embedding digital content into authentic locations, AR fosters experiential and inquiry-driven learning aligned with geography’s spatial and environmental paradigms. Building on evidence from 2015 to 2025, this review synthesizes 138 studies to examine how AR supports cognitive, affective, and behavioral learning dimensions. The analysis reveals that AR enhances spatial reasoning, visualization of abstract processes, and place-based engagement when integrated within robust instructional design frameworks. However, persistent gaps remain in long-term learning assessment, scalability, and teacher competence for authoring AR experiences. Cognitive-load and motivation studies suggest that AR’s benefits are maximized when interactivity and spatial anchoring are balanced with scaffolding. The review proposes a multidimensional model linking technological affordances, pedagogical strategies, and geographic thinking to promote education for sustainability and digital spatial citizenship. Implications for researchers, educators, and developers are discussed to guide future cross-disciplinary innovations.

Abstract

Climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure pose serious threats to endemic species with restricted distributions, such as the Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) of Sulawesi. This study aims to model habitat suitability and potential distribution of the Maleo using an integrated Geographic Information System and Maximum Entropy approach. Presence-only occurrence data were combined with bio-physical and anthropogenic environmental variables to generate spatial predictions of habitat suitability across coastal and lowland landscapes. The model demonstrated strong predictive performance, indicating that the selected variables effectively captured the ecological requirements of the species. Habitat suitability patterns revealed that sandy soil characteristics, proximity to natural heat sources, and river systems were the most influential factors enhancing habitat suitability, reflecting the species’ unique reproductive ecology. In contrast, proximity to roads and settlements consistently reduced suitability, highlighting the negative impact of human disturbance. The continuous suitability output was further classified into core habitat and buffer zones to support conservation-oriented spatial planning. The resulting zoning framework identifies priority areas for protection and management, particularly outside formal protected areas where development pressure is high. Overall, this study provides robust spatial evidence for understanding Maleo habitat requirements and offers a transferable methodological framework for modeling other endemic species. The findings underscore the importance of integrating ecological and human dimensions in habitat modeling to support effective, evidence-based conservation strategies

Abstract

Birds are powerful biodiversity indicators due to their wide distribution and responsiveness to environmental pressures. Building on prior reviews, we synthesize methodological advances to update the Multi-species Bird Index (MSI) field. This study recaps limitations like European/breeding-season biases and uncertainty gaps while integrating recent studies that expand analytical rigor. Advances in passive acoustic monitoring, remote sensing, and trait-based models now improve species selection and reduce detectability errors. We translate these into practical guidance for policy application and a research agenda emphasizing seasonal completeness. The synthesis underscores birds’ role as decision ready barometers and provides a blueprint for robust monitoring. Birds serve as premier biodiversity barometers due to their cosmopolitan distribution and sensitivity to anthropogenic pressures. However, traditional Multi species Bird Indicators (MSIs) often suffer from significant Europe-centric and breeding-season biases that limit their global policy impact. This study synthesizes recent methodological breakthroughs to update the MSI framework. We evaluate the integration of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), high-resolution remote sensing (ALS LiDAR), and trait-based selection criteria into standard monitoring protocols. Our synthesis reveals that combining automated sensor networks with hierarchical Bayesian models effectively mitigates detectability errors and fills critical data gaps in under-represented regions. Furthermore, linking avian indicators with carbon sequestration and equity metrics allows for more robust prioritization of Nature based Solutions (NbS). We provide a practical blueprint for next-generation indicators that emphasize seasonal completeness and statistical rigor. By shifting from retrospective reports to forward-looking policy tools, these refined barometers can more accurately track progress toward global biodiversity targets.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of per capita income on poverty levels in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. The regency faces challenges in reducing poverty despite various government programs. The knowledge gap regarding the direct contribution of per capita income to poverty is the focus of this research. Here, we demonstrate that an increase in per capita income has a negative correlation with poverty levels, where each rise in income is associated with a significant reduction in poverty percentage. However, the study also found that population growth significantly increases poverty if not accompanied by improvements in economic and social infrastructure. The findings of this research imply that economic policies aimed at increasing income must be supported by improvements in access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure to more effectively reduce poverty rates in the region. Future research is expected to deepen the analysis of other factors that influence poverty more comprehensively

Abstract

This study was motivated by the high risk of flooding in the transmigration area of Taluditi Subdistrict, which is influenced by land-use changes, topographic conditions, and rainfall. This study aims to map flood risk levels and enhance community understanding of disaster mitigation. The methodology employed is a descriptive quantitative approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), utilizing spatial analysis and SWOT analysis through field observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The research results indicate that high-risk areas are located in low-lying regions near river channels with inadequate drainage systems. Internally, the region possesses strengths in social aspects and natural resources, while externally, there are opportunities for government support despite facing the threat of climate change. These findings underscore the importance of integrating spatial analysis and community empowerment in sustainable disaster mitigation efforts.
