Abstract

Jumantik plays a pivotal role in the control of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Participatory mapping training can enhance its risk of transmission recognition. This research aims to identify the potential use of DHF risk factors participatory mapping training for Jumantik. This experimental research carried out from October 2013-January 2014 in four DHF highest prevalence regions in Malang. Mapping is based on data from Google Earth, DHF risk factors like homes, ovitrap sites, and larva-positive buildings, and the DHF prevalence over the past 6 months. The results indicate a variety of participant’s capacity to generate maps while the ability to analyze and plan was conspicuously absent. Qualitative data reveals there's an intention to map DHF individually by a few numbers of jumantik and primary healthcare staff. The conclusion is that this training prototype can be further adapted by accounting participant’s features, approaches, and capabilities as well as primary healthcare commitment for its continuity.

Abstract

VARIANCE OF RICE STRAW INFUSED WATER STORAGE LENGTH AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE AMOUNT OF AEDES AEGYPTI MOSQUITO EGGS IN KEPANJEN MODEL OVITRAPOne of the technology that can be used in order to control the dengue vector breeding is ovitrap. Ovitrap is an egg trap which is used to detect the existence of dengue vector, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This research aim to describe the effect of rice straw infused water storage length attractant to Aedes aegypti eggs amount trapped in Kepanjen model ovitrap. The study was pre-experimental with one-group post-test only conducted on January–March 2014 at Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya and General Chemistry Laboratory, Faculty of Science, Universitas Brawijaya. In each of six cages, 100 mosquitoes were placed with 4 ovitraps with different storage length of rice straw infused water attractant, i.e. 0, 12, 34, and 90 days. Eggs collection was done at day 3rd and day 6th. The result showed that there was no significant differences on the number of eggs trapped among each different attractant storage length (p=0.694). Therefore, rice straw infused water can be use up to 90 days as an attractant in Kepanjen model ovitrap. In conclusion, the variation of rice straw infused water storage length attractant did not provide effects to the number of Aedes aegypti eggs trapped in Kepanjen model ovitrap.

Abstract

Cervical cancer has a high incidence with a low survival rate. The clinicopathological profile and risk factors cause this. Most cervical cancer sufferers are late in realizing this, contributing to the severity suffered. Radiation has a very important role because it is a therapy that can be done in cervical cancer patients who have experienced an advanced level of severity. This study aims to determine the survival and influence of the clinicopathological and risk factors of radiation patients as a consideration in selecting effective therapy to increase the survival rate of cervical cancer patients. The benefit of this research is to help evaluate cervical cancer management procedures with radiation therapy applied in many hospitals in Indonesia to increase the success of therapy for cervical cancer. An analytical observational study with a retrospective cohort type using medical record data with samples of all patients diagnosed with cervical cancer who received radiation therapy from January to December 2017. Samples in this study were 111 patients. This study revealed that the five-year survival rate of cervical cancer patients was only 53.1%. There was an influence on the clinicopathological stage (p<0.000), histopathology (p<0.000), lymph node status (p<0.000), degree of differentiation (p<0.001), and risk factors for age (p<0.038), parity (p<0.001), education (0.022), marital status (0.001), contraceptive use (p<0.000), and BMI (p<0.000) which resulted in a log-rank p-value <0.05, so it was concluded that there was an effect between these variables on cervical carcinoma survival rate. Multivariate, it was found that radiation, histopathology, lymph node status, contraception, and BMI had a significant effect (p<0.005) on the survival rate of cervical cancer patients. The results of this study indicate that the survival rate of cervical cancer patients is still low, and there is a clinicopathological and risk factors that influence the survival rate of cervical cancer patients.

Abstract

The incidence rate (IR) of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Indonesia has increased in recent years and still causes a health problem. Makassar, as one of the big cities in Indonesia, is also experiencing of DHF cases. According to the Health Office of Makassar City, DHF cases during 2014 – 2016 has increased from 139 to 250 cases. The defense mechanism of dengue virus in transovarial transmission from female mosquitoes to eggs is estimated to be one of the factors that increase the rate of DHF. In addition, the circulation of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can also affect the increase of the rate. This study aims are to identify ovitrap index and to find out how much the vertical transmission of dengue virus by measuring the minimum infection rate (MIR) and the distribution of four dengue virus serotype in Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in the city of Makassar, South Sulawesi, as well as their association with the incidence rate (IR) in the area. This observational research uses ecological study with cross-sectional approach. The samples of the study are male and female mosquitoes from Ae.aegypti eggs obtained from the installation of ovitrap  in 30 urban villages in Makassar. Dengue virus identification was performed using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). These results showed that the ovitrap index (IO) was in the range of 0 - 66.7%. The average value of the ovitrap index outside the house (44.44%) was greater than inside house (37.22%). The results of identification of dengue virus using RT-PCR showed negative results as indicated by the non-formation of a band on 75 pools male and 78 pools female Ae. aegypti mosquitoes after electrophoresis. The results of this study indicated that the Ae. aegypti mosquito in Makassar City showed a tendency to lay eggs outside the house due to the habit of the people who put rain water shelters outside the house which could become breeding place for Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. This study also showed that there was no transovarial transmission of DENV found in male and female Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in Makassar City during November 2017 until January 2018.
