Abstract

Background: Programs aimed at altering health risk behavior in adolescents have frequently been a priority for the health department in Indonesia. However, these efforts have not yielded optimal results thus far. The Health Belief Model (HBM) is considered a dependable indicator for predicting health-risk behavior. Objective: This study sought to establish the relationship between the constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) – namely, perceived susceptibility to health-related issues due to smoking, perceived barriers to non-smoking, perceived benefits of non-smoking, perceived self-efficacy to non-smoking, and cues to action for non-smoking – and smoking behavior among adolescents of school age. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional design, examining smoking behavior in 171 school-age adolescents in Indonesia. This was done using an online Indonesian Smoking Behavior Questionnaire and a validated Indonesia Health Belief Model Questionnaire that measures the five domains of HBM. The Chi-square test was utilized to explore associations among different variables. Results: Adolescents with an average age of 16.04 years (ranging from 12 to 17 years) reported a 5.8% incidence of smoking in the past 30 days. Significantly, there was a relationship between perceived susceptibility (p = 0.002), barriers to quitting smoking (p <0.001), cues to action (p = 0.019), and smoking behavior in adolescents. Conclusion: The study provides valuable insights into how the Health Belief Model is linked to the involvement of adolescents in health risk behavior, particularly smoking. This information is crucial for the development of health education tailored to adolescents of school age.

Abstract

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a nutrient-densed food that can be used as a food source and possess pharmacological properties. Fermented Moringa has a better amino acid profiles and potentially has a greater digestibility. Nevertheless, the effect of lactic acid bacteria as fermentation culture on Moringa’s amino acid profiles is warrant for investigation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Moringa’s fermentation with lactic acid bacteria on its nutritional value, especially amino acid. In this study, Moringa leaves were fermented with lactic acid bacteria for 0, 24, and 48 hours. Amino acid concentrations with fermentation 0, 24, and 48 hours respectively were 1007.94 mg/kg, 1304.13 mg/kg, and 521.12 mg/kg, where the highest concentration of amino acids was in Moringa leaves which were fermented for 24 hours. The concentrations of various amino acids in Moringa leaves were measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The best treatment was 24 hours of fermentation, where the total amino acid (TAA) was 1304.13 mg/kg.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Sufficiency of essential amino acid protein, BCAA (Branched-chain Amino Acids), may modulate muscle fatigue among endurance athletes. Indonesia poses an abundance of local food that can be developed as a good yet low-cost BCAA-food sources such as peace, winged beans, and soybeans. This study aimed to develop BCAA-snack bar food and describe its’s nutritional and sensory properties. This experimental study compared a ratio of Capri, winged, and soy flour, respectively into Formula 1 (F1) (25:25:25), F2 (25:10:40), F3 (10:40:25), and F4 (40:25:10). Sensory analysis was carried out by 25 trained panelists using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) while nutritional analysis (proximate analysis and Branched-chain Amino Acid (BCAA)) was performed in an accredited laboratory. One Way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc was used to find a difference between formulas. Formula 4 had the highest acceptance and contained, in percent, 18.57 protein, 40.09 carbohydrates, 9.81 fat, 1.67 ash, 23.3 moisture, and 4.06 crude fibers. The F4 also contained, in percent, 1.54 leucine, 0.88 isoleucine, 0,95 valine. There was a significant difference for each proximate and BCAA content across formulas while only aroma parameter that did not differ for both hedonic and hedonic quality aspects between formulas ABSTRAK Kecukupan protein asam amino esensial, BCAA (Branched-chain Amino Acids), dapat memodulasi kelelahan otot pada atlet endurance. Abstract

Addressing the prevalence of anemia in female adolescents requires the active engagement of multiple sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the school-based weekly iron folate supplementation (WIFAS) program which may lead to an increased anemia prevalence in female adolescents. The role of community-based organizations in assisting preexisting programs is supposed to alleviate the prevalence effectively. This study aimed to analyze the role of a community-based organization (CBO) consisting of youth organizations and integrated services post cadres in a program to improve hemoglobin level in Sirnagalih Village, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. This pre-experimental study involved 89 female adolescents. After the intervention conducted by the CBO, significant differences were identified in the level of knowledge, attitudes, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels of female adolescents (p<0.05). The linear regression test obtained a statistical model equation related to female adolescents' Hb levels after being assisted by the CBO (R = 0.821, p = 0.000). The variable role of CBO, understanding media information, initial Hb level, adherence to consuming WIFAS, and habits to consume iron enhancer food of female adolescents can explain the Hb levels as much as 82%.

Abstract

Background: Poor body perceptions may cause stress that leads to an increased risk of eating disorders that subsequently affect nutritional status. However, this relationship in adolescents is still hardly explored. Objectives: To examine the relationship between eating disorders, body perception, stress scores, and body mass index in adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 33 teenagers aged 13-16 years at Attaqwa 02 Tarumajaya Middle School who were drawn using stratified random sampling. Eating disorders, body perception, and stress score were assessed by the Eating Atittude Test-40, Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questioner Appearance Scale, and a modified Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42, respectively. Body mass index for age z-score (BAZ) was generated from anthropometric measurements. Relationships were tested by Pearson and Partial correlations. Results: More than half of the respondents were boys (51.5%). Eating disorders (r= 0.399) and stress scores (r= 0.539) were significantly and positively associated with BAZ in adolescents. The relationship remains significant although a bit attenuated after adjusted by age (r= 0.375; r= 0.562) and gender (r= 0.388; r= 0.516). No association was found between body perception and BAZ (r= -0.027). After adjusting by age (r= -0.107) and gender (r= -0.052) the association remained insignificant. Conclusions: Eating disorders and stress scores correlated significantly with body mass index z-score in adolescents. Health and nutrition promotion to prevent eating disorders and stress should be encouraged to reduce the risk of obesity in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Risk factors of metabolic syndromes develop in childhood and tacks across life, which may lead them to a higher risk of getting cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. A healthy diet and being physically active are supposed to modify the risk of metabolic syndromes (MetS). However, those observations primarily work in adult samples and the biological mechanisms that link that behavioral factor and MetS in children and adolescents still need to be explored. Asian people are more likely to get MetS than their white counterparts, but study in Malay-Austronesia children is minimal.   Objectives: This study aims to comprehensively review and appraise studies that elucidate biological factors (insulin-like growth factor-1 and adiponectin) that possibly mediate the relationship between those risk factors and MetS in Malay-Austronesia children. Methods: The search will be performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and local databases Garuda (Garba Rujukan Digital, Indonesian) and Mycite (Malaysian citation index). All prospective cohort studies that examine the association of one of the behavioral factors (dietary intakes OR physical activity) AND one of the biological factors (Insulin-like growth factor OR adiponectin) with MetS or its components in healthy children with the exposures start from the age of 1 and 12 years of age and outcomes begin from 1 year and two months until the age of 18 years old are eligible. Only literature in English and local languages from inception to 31 December 2023 that match eligibility criteria will be included. National Institute of Health tool for observational studies will be used to assess the quality of included studies. This work was registered to PROSPERO CRD42023471481.   Results: The findings may shed light on how the predefined biological factors mediate those behavioural factors on MetS in children. The findings will also be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Conclusion: This review utilizes relevant databases to optimize the searching of eligible studies. Eligible studies will be extracted by more (four) researchers who work independently with a predefined data extraction template. There are possibility some studies report significant finding on IGF-1 binding protein instead of total IGF-1 or its molar ratio will challenge the statistical analysis.
