Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is a crucial skill for addressing the challenges of the 21st century. This study sought to investigate the impact of the Discovery Learning model on students’ CT abilities, examining the influence of learning models, self-regulated learning (SRL) levels, and their interplay. The research employed a quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental design involving two Grade 7 classes: an experimental group (n = 26) receiving instruction through the Discovery Learning model and a control group (n = 24) receiving conventional instruction. Instruments included an essay test assessing CT and a Likert-scale questionnaire evaluating SRL. Data were analyzed employing descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The findings indicated that the average CT score in the experimental class (67.60) was superior to that in the control class (62.82). However, the Mann-Whitney test revealed that this disparity was not statistically significant (p = 0.151 > 0.05). Although no significant difference was observed when comparing the two learning models collectively, the Kruskal-Wallis test demonstrated a substantial effect of SRL on CT (p = 0.000). Furthermore, a significant interaction was identified between the learning model and the SRL level (p = 0.000). Notably, students with high SRL achieved the highest CT performance within the Discovery Learning group. These findings underscore the efficacy of combining the Discovery Learning model with high levels of student self-directed learning in enhancing computational thinking abilities. This evidence suggests that integrating teaching models with student learning autonomy yields more favorable outcomes.

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are essential for students to understand, construct, and express mathematical ideas. However, studies linking these skills with affective factors such as self-confidence remain limited, particularly in learning exponents. This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ self-confidence and their mathematical communication skills in exponent learning. A qualitative case study design was applied to 53 eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Pringgasela. Data were obtained through a mathematical communication test, a validated self-confidence questionnaire, and in-depth interviews. The results show variations in communication skills across self-confidence levels. Students with high self-confidence communicated ideas more comprehensively through oral, written, and visual representations. Students with moderate self-confidence demonstrated adequate but restricted forms of representation, while those with low self-confidence struggled to articulate ideas consistently. These findings emphasize the significant role of affective factors in shaping mathematical communication. The study suggests that instructional strategies should not only focus on conceptual mastery but also foster students’ self-confidence through collaborative activities, discussions, and presentations. This contributes practically to classroom practice and theoretically to the integration of affective and cognitive aspects in mathematics learning, particularly in the context of exponents.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of an ethnomathematics-based problem-based learning (PBL) model on students’ mathematical conceptual understanding. By integrating local culture into mathematics instruction, the model aims to facilitate more meaningful and contextual learning. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental posttest-only control group design. Two classes were purposively selected: an experimental class with 20 students and a control class with 27 students, based on initial ability homogeneity and scheduling considerations. Data were collected through an essay test, developed from indicators of conceptual understanding, and supported by classroom observations. Data analysis involved prerequisite tests (normality and homogeneity) and hypothesis testing using the independent samples t-test. The results revealed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05), indicating that the ethnomathematics-based PBL model positively influences students’ conceptual understanding. These findings highlight the potential of integrating cultural contexts into problem-based learning to enhance students’ comprehension of mathematical concepts.

Abstract

In the literature, studies on technology-supported learning, especially using LMS, have been widely carried out during a pandemic. However, little is known about LMS, which is interesting and helps to develop students' statistical reasoning abilities for online learning by considering the students' Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) levels (High, medium and low). This study aims to examine and analyze the differences in statistical reasoning abilities of students who study using LMS in terms of SRL levels (high, medium and low). This study uses a quantitative method with the type of One-group pre-test post-test design. What took sampled randomly at the University of Pasundan Bandung, totalling 54 third-level students of Pasundan University Bandung, Indonesia. Research data related to statistical reasoning abilities were collected through a test consisting of six questions. In contrast, SRL level data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of 46 question items. Paired t-test and One-way ANOVA analysis were applied to answer the research hypothesis. The results of the study concluded that students studying with LMS with High SRL obtained a higher increase in statistical reasoning ability than students studying with LMS with Medium and low SRL categories, with the criteria for improvement in the three categories being in the high and medium improvement categories. Research findings related to learning using LMS can be used as an alternative learning model in online learning situations.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the factors that influence the human development index (HDI) in West Nusa Tenggara using a spatial panel model. This research is crucial because it can analyze correlations between regions and is more efficient, informative, and effective in HDI modeling. The data structure is panel data, where observation units are the cities and regencies in West Nusa Tenggara Province for 2010 to 2022. A human development index serves as the dependent variable. The independent variables were per capita expenditure, average length of school, length of school expectations, and life expectancy. The Rook contiguity and the customized matrix (transportation routes) are used to examine geographical impacts. The results of the analysis indicate: 1) there are spatial linkages between districts and cities in West Nusa Tenggara; 2) the SAR Fixed Effect model is the most appropriate spatial model to model the human development index; 3) the human development index can be improved simultaneously by factors such as life expectancy, expected length of schooling, average length of schooling, and per capita expenditure; and 4) life expectancy is the main factor affecting the human development index.

Abstract

Abstract: Non-linear equations often become mathematical models that describe situations in various fields, such as engineering and biology. Determining the roots of solving non-linear equations is something that needs to be studied considering that the characteristics of these equations cannot be solved by analytical means. The purpose of this research is to find out the best method for determining the roots of non-linear equations. The research method was carried out by comparing three methods, namely the Newton Midpoint Halley Method (NMH), Olver Method, and the Chebyshev Method in solving non-linear equations in the form of polynomials, trigonometry, exponentials, and mixtures (trigonometry and exponential). The simulation parameters use an error of 0.001. The results of the analysis show that of the three methods used, the fastest convergence rate in determining the roots of non-linear equations (polynomial, trigonometry, exponential, mixed trigonometry and exponential) is using the Newton Midpoint Halley (NMH) method. so that the best method for solving the roots of non-linear equations is the Newton Midpoint Halley (NMH) method.
