Abstract

The purposes of this study are: (1) to find out which between the study models can give the best mathematics learning results; (2) to find out which student creativity categories can give the best mathematics learning result; (3) to find out the interaction between the study models and student creativities towards the results of learning. The results of learning in this case are limited to the subject of Bangun Ruang Sisi Lengkung. The study uses a quasi-experimental design by using two-way analysis of variance with unequal cell sizes. The population of the study refers to all students of Grade IX in the junior high schools in District Area 04 of the Sub-Province of Wonogiri sampled into three classes of two schools through stratified and cluster random sampling. Data are colllected by documentation, questionnaire, and tests. Results of analyses with 0.05 level of significance and continued by double comparation test show: 1) The guided discovery model and cooperative learning give the same learning results but are better than the conventional model. (2) Students with a higher creativity level in mathematics have better results than students with a lower creativity level. (3) At the high creativity category level, students show better results in guided discovery model than cooperative learning and cooperative learning is better than the conventional model. At the low and medium creativity level, guided discovery model and cooperative learning model give the same learning results but better than the conventional model. Besides, in the guided discovery model, students with high creativity level do better than students with medium creativity level and students with medium creativity level have the same results as students with low creativity level. As with the cooperative learning model and conventional model, students with high, medium, and low creativity models show the same learning results

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the Indonesian students’ performance in solving fraction division case including the difficulties, relations, and implications for classroom instruction. This study employed a descriptive case study to achieve it. The procedures of data collecting were initiated by giving a context-based problem to 40 elementary school students and it then according to the test result was selected three students for semi-structure interviewed. The findings of the study showed that the tendency of students’ procedural knowledge dominated to their conceptual knowledge in solving the fraction division problem. Furthermore, it was found several mistakes. First, the students were not accurate when solving the problem and unsuccessful to figure out the problem. Second, students’ conceptual knowledge was incomplete. The last was is to apply the laws and strategies of fraction division irrelevant. These findings emphasized other sub-construct of fractions instead of part-to-whole in the teaching and learning process. Teaching and learning of fraction in the mathematics classroom should take both conceptual and procedural knowledge into account as an attempt to prevent faults and misconceptions. In conclusion, it was substantial to present context-based problems at the beginning of the lesson in order for students to be able to learn fraction division meaningfully.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate college students' work with logarithm questions. Qualitative descriptive research is chosen to reach the research goal. The participants of the study were fourteen Indonesian students who were enrolled at different universities in Ankara, Turkey. They worked to solve ten logarithm questions which were classified according to the contents. After analysing their written responses, interviews were conducted to obtain further explanation about their strategies and common mistakes. The study found that participants' works in dealing with logarithm questions comprised of (a) processing base, (b) holding the rule, (c) separating, (d) jumping, and (e) conditioning. Therewith, several participants made common mistake because of misconception about logarithm, arithmetical problems, and misuse of algebra concept. Implication of the finding of the study for teaching and learning logarithm were presented.

Abstract

Mathematical concepts will be embedded if they can be imagined and appear in everyday life. Therefore, this study aims to develop Local Instructional Theory in context-based matrix learning. Design research is adopted to achieve these objectives. The design research has three stages, namely, preliminary experiment, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The study was conducted at a high school on the outskirts of the capital, involving 39 students of class XI. The data was collected employing tests, observation, interviews, worksheets, and documentation in the form of video recordings, photos, and student journals. The results indicated that students were able to construct their concept of matrices through the context of a favorite or a hobby as a starting point in compiling and defining a matrix, and continued with the matrix multiplication concept (matrix scalar multiplication as repeated addition; terms and products of two matrices).

Abstract

This study focuses on identifying pre-service primary school teachers’ works with division problem using a mathematical approach called Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). A case study was conducted to thirty-six pre-service primary school teachers in one private university in Jakarta who took RME course. The result of analysis of the participants' written responses indicates that the approach led the participants to develop mathematical meaning to deal with division problems by means of various strategies. In compliance with the tenets of RME, to wit, the use of model and symbol for progressive mathematization, the study shows that the participants could acquire orientation for developing their mathematical ideas and strategies. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to examine whether there is an increased understanding of the concept of shape using Realistic Mathematics Education. This research was conducted in one primary school class II in the academic year 2016/2017. Design Research was chosen as a basis research which included preparation for the experiment, preliminary teaching experiment class which involved 6 students Class IIA to test early Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT), Teaching Experiment class which involved 37 students of Class IIB, and retrospective analysis (data analysis obtained from the previous stage). HLT plays an important role as a research design and instrument. Learning trajectory that has been designed then was compared with the actual student learning in the teaching experiment. The data of the students’ understanding of the concept of shape was obtained by using pre-test, observation, interview, student worksheet and post-test as well as data obtained in the learning process. The results of this study found that there was an increased understanding of the concept of the shape which will be elaborated further in the discussion.
