Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to measure the extent of the Kahoot! Effectiveness in improving the professional competence of English teachers in terms of memorizing vocabulary. The study was conducted in the teacher working group (KKG or MGMP) by taking 30 English teachers at random. The system that will be carried out is by control and experiment class then compares the scores both of them. In addition, an in-depth exploration (mix method) was conducted by interviewing the teacher whether the Kahoot! may be used in the next forum. The results of the study showed that control group only could memorize 5,33 in average however experiment class got 8,6 in average so it means that there is 33% distinction between both of them. Then, this result is strengthened by calculation on Wilcoxon Signed Rank that showed that the sig value 0,002 is greater than 0.05 so it also means like aforementioned. Kahoot app! found it very helpful in memorizing vocabulary because of its flexibility that it can be accessed from anywhere (e-class) but there are still many senior teachers, who are technology savvy, cannot access kahoot! especially if it will be implemented in the KKG or MGMP of English teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of politeness strategies which occur in EFL classroom interactions in a senior high school. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research design to explore the politeness strategies used by the teacher and the students in their interactions. The participants in this study were an English teacher and 30 students. The data in this study were in the form of utterances which contain politeness strategies. The data were taken from a 90-minutes English lesson which was video-recorded. The findings showed there were a total of 13 excerpts containing three politeness strategies: positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and bald-on-record strategy. The interactions were dominated by the teacher. Moreover, the politeness strategies which occurred in the classroom interactions were influenced by some factors such as age difference, institutional position, power, and social distance.

Abstract

The rapid development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) has influenced how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and educators engage in academic writing. This study aims to explore how lecturers and students in Indonesian higher education integrate AI tools into their academic writing practices, perceive benefits and challenges of using AI, and concern with ethical considerations. Using a qualitative approach combining interviews and photovoice, the study involved thirteen participants from western, central, and eastern Indonesia. The findings show that AI tools are used not only for linguistic assistance but also for idea generation, prompt refinement, and collaborative meaning-making, reflecting an interactive relationship between users and technology. Participants reported that AI improves efficiency, creativity, and clarity in writing, while concerns were raised regarding hallucinated references, inconsistency, and overreliance that may reduce critical thinking and authenticity. The study also finds that AI should be used ethically as a complementary partner that supports, rather than replaces, human intellect in academic writing. The main ethical considerations include maintaining authorship, content verification, and proper referencing. The findings imply the need for pedagogical frameworks and institutional policies that promote ethical, reflective, and responsible AI use in higher education.

Abstract

Arabic language education in Indonesia occupies a distinctive position as both a sacred and heritage language, yet classroom pedagogy remains constrained by grammar-translation methods, exam-driven assessment, and hierarchical teacher–student relations. This article examines the intersections of student voice, teacher professionalism, and critical pedagogy in Arabic classrooms, highlighting their potential to reframe pedagogy in faith-based settings. Drawing on critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970) and democratic professionalism (Sachs, 2001), we synthesize international scholarship with the Indonesian context to propose a context-sensitive framework for integrating student perspectives. The analysis illustrates how curricular reforms (KMA No. 183/2019), digital tools, and dialogical practices create openings for student agency, while cultural hierarchies and exam orientations continue to constrain authentic participation. We argue that student voice in Arabic education not only enhances learner engagement and communicative competence but also reshapes teacher identity toward more reflective and dialogical professionalism. By situating these dynamics in Indonesia, this article offers insights into how student voice, teacher professionalism, and critical pedagogy converge in Arabic language education, extending global debates on multilingual and faith-based pedagogy.

Abstract

Oral corrective feedback is an essential part in learning English as a foreign language. Teachers' beliefs about oral corrective feedback generally underlie their practices, but some studies showed that sometimes there is a mismatch between teachers' beliefs and actual practices. Previous studies also found that students with different grades have different expectations about oral corrective feedback, making it important for teachers to understand it. Based on the previous findings, this study aimed to examine teachers’ beliefs and practices of oral corrective feedback for students across different grades. This study was a qualitative study, with data collection techniques using interviews and observations. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants in this study were two early secondary school English teachers located in Yogyakarta. The findings showed that teachers have a positive belief in the importance of oral corrective feedback. Teachers' beliefs about the oral corrective feedback timing match their actual practices. However, there was a mismatch between the strategies believed by grade 7 teachers and actual practices. It showed that teachers adjusted their oral corrective feedback strategies to the real conditions. Overall, the teachers’ practices produced positive uptake from students. This finding emphasized the importance of flexibility in the oral corrective feedback application according to the classroom context.

Abstract

Motivation in language mastery is a crucial aspect that supports learner success especially in non-formal education. This study explores the motivation of English language learners in non-formal education as well as their perceived difficulties. Employing a qualitative approach with in-depth-interviews in the data collection, the study involved eight learners from a language course institution in Yogyakarta. The transcribed data were analyzed, interpreted, and categorised based on types of motivation and difficulties. The results show that most of the English learners possess instrumental motivation in learning foreign languages, but some tend to have integrative motivation. The instrumental motivation is mainly linked to efforts to pass the exam or tests with good grades. Their integrative motivation is related to recognizing the culture of the target language speech community and desire to communicate with the target community. Despite their motivation, they faced some difficulties related to language skills, especially reading and listening. In addition, they perceived vocabulary as hindrance in all the four skills. Further research to overcome the difficulties is recommended to maximize the learning achievement.

Abstract

The development of digital technology requires MSMe players, such as pottery craftsmen, to adapt modern marketing strategies in order to increase competitiveness and market reach. To address this need, the English Literature Study Program Team at UNY carried out a Community Service (PkM) activity to improve digital marketing skills for pottery craftsmen in Melikan Village, Wedi District, Klaten. The activity focused on training in product photography and videography using smartphones, content editing via Canva, utilizing WhatsApp Business, and creating landing pages. The training was conducted using two approaches: (1) experiential learning, where participants were guided to directly apply what they learned, and (2) remote mentoring as a means of consultation and assistance for independent practice. The training outcomes, evaluated through direct observation and questionnaires, showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding and skills in managing digital content as a promotional medium for pottery. Participants found the program highly beneficial, and all expressed a desire for similar follow-up training. This program not only encourages digital independence among artisans in managing product promotions more professionally but also expands the online marketing reach of pottery artisans' products.
