Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the comparison between the measurement of frequency and formant frequency values of Bataknese and Javanese male and female in producing the vowels of the Indonesian language: /i/, /e/, /ə/, /a/, /u/, and /o/. The subjects of this study are two Indonesian sentences that consist of all of the vowels. The respondents are six Bataknese males and females from Medan and six Javanese males and females from Surabaya. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method by presenting the numerical value of frequency and formant and the description of the findings. The result of this study showed that both Javanese females and males have a higher frequency and formant frequency in producing the vowels of the Indonesian language than Bataknese. Even though Batanese speakers sound like they have a higher intonation, the fact is that the that the frequency of Javanese speakers is higher. Furthermore, female speakers produce each word and vowel with a higher value than male speakers. Keywords: Phonetics Acoustic, Vowel, Frequency, Formant.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate two prosodic variations (intended meaning and unintended meaning) and to deepen the understanding of the emotional nuances conveyed by women's utterances of the word terserah, contributing insights into linguistic communication and emotional expression. This research employed a descriptive qualitative analysis design. Data were collected from women of different ethnic backgrounds and ages, all married to facilitate emotional expression during recording. Three speakers participated in this research: a 31-year-old Javanese woman (P1), a 35-year-old Banjanese woman (P2), and a 40-year-old Bataknese woman (P3). Prosodic elements were measured using PRAAT, a software tool used to analyze prosodic elements such as frequency, intensity, and duration. The findings revealed significant differences between intended and unintended meanings. Intended meaning was characterized by lower pitch, lower intensity, and longer duration with a descending tone. In contrast, unintended meaning exhibited higher pitch, higher intensity, and shorter duration with an ascending tone. In conclusion, the prosodic variations indicate different emotional expressions. However, contextual factors, individual psychological conditions, body language, and facial expressions also play crucial roles in determining the emotional meaning of verbal communication. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of emotions requires an approach that considers all these aspects together.

Abstract

Language sound errors at the phonological level. Phonemes or language sounds in Indonesian consist of vowels, consonants, diphthongs 'double vowels', and clusters 'consonant groups'. Differences in phonemes will change standard language varieties into non-standard ones. Phonological problems occur because vowel, consonant or diphthong phonemes change into other phonemes, thereby changing standard language into non-standard ones. This research aims to analyze language sound errors, namely deletions, additions and changes in vowel phonemes, consonant phonemes, combined vowel phonemes and combined consonant phonemes. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique for this research is by listening and using the language watched in Indonesian television advertisements. This data analysis technique consists of (1) data collection (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation (4) interesting conclusions. The results of data analysis of Indonesian language sound errors in Television Advertisements are language sound errors in Indonesian consisting of vowels, consonants, diphthongs 'double vowels', and 'consonant clusters' clusters due to errors in language use that do not match Indonesian Spelling (EBI) . Errors in Indonesian sounds or pronunciation that occur in television advertisements like this occur due to ignorance or on purpose so that the advertisement displayed will attract the attention of consumers or people who see, watch and listen to it.

Abstract

Introduction: Edentulism impairs the ability to chew, eat, and speak properly. Dentures, which aim to address this issue, are also believed to contribute to a decrease in the peak intensity value and spectral width of sound formants. Formants refer to the air within the vocal tract that is set in vibration by the vocal fold's action. This study aims to observe changes in formant values between complete denture users and participants with complete dentition. Methods: This preliminary study recruited six voluntary participants, divided into two groups. The first group consisted of subjects with complete dentition, while the second group comprised individuals wearing complete dentures on both arches. All participants introduced themselves, and their speech was recorded using PRAAT® software. For the second group, recordings were made both with and without dentures. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA. Results: Significant differences in formant scores were observed across all groups. Post hoc tests revealed a significant difference in formant scores between completely edentulous subjects without dentures and the complete dentition group; Conclusion: Correcting speech defects is the third main objective in fabricating denture prostheses. Enhancing the phonetically beneficial construction of denture quality improves psychosocial parameters, including quality of life and socialization abilities, and accelerates successful Prosthodontic treatment. The findings indicate that the format score of a person with a complete denture is not substantially different from that of an individual with complete dentition. Conversely, individuals who have lost their complete dentures and not using complete denture may exhibit significant differences in formant score.

Abstract

Suprasegmentals are language sounds that accompany phonemes, which can be in the form of sound pressure, length-shortness, and sound vibrations associated with speech segments. Suprasegmentals in this study includes the frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced. This study aims to analyze the differences in frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced by male and female speakers in pronouncing Toba Batak imperative sentences, namely: “beta hita tu topi tao!” which means ‘let's go to the lakeside!’. This research method uses an instrumental approach by maximizing Praat software in analyzing frequency, intensity, and duration. The population and sample taken in this study is the voice of one native male and female speaker. The results of the analysis of this study show, namely: (1) the frequency of male speakers' voices is lower than female speakers; (2) the intensity of male speakers' voices is smaller than female speakers; and (3) the duration of male speakers' voices takes longer than female speakers to say the sentence. From this research, it can be seen that male and female voice differences have relevance to suprasegmental because both focus on the nonsegmental aspects of language, which play an important role in verbal communication. Keywords: suprasegmentals, frequency, duration, intensity

Abstract

Language revitalization as a linguistic social movement that aims to preserve and promote local languages, is experiencing a paradigm shift in Indonesia. These shifts can be seen from the aspect of language status objects. That is meant here is that the object of language status in language revitalization is not only languages with minority and endangered status. All local languages in Indonesia can be revitalized. Based on these conditions, this study explores the shift in the language revitalization paradigm in Indonesia. This aims to explain the structure of paradigm shift and provide an explanation for understanding language revitalization in its historical development in Indonesia. The study method uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques from the results of literature studies. Data analysis refers to Thomas Samuel Kuhn’s structure of the scientific revolution in terms of paradigm shift. As a result, the shift in the language revitalization paradigm in terms of the language status object is based on the heterogeneity of languages in Indonesia. Meanwhile, all languages in Indonesia must and have the right to be preserved in accordance with statutory regulations. This condition makes the government regulate language revitalization regulations that apply to all languages so that all languages in Indonesia receive the same treatment in the context of language preservation efforts.

Abstract

The study aims to discuss the vowel formant of the Karo and Simalungun languages. This study uses qualitative methods with the data described as numeric tables. In collecting data, the researcher involved three native speakers from both sides. The native speakers are three females from the Karo and Simalungun areas between 17 and 45 years old. The data was obtained by recording in a convenient location, and the syllables were naturally uttered. This study found that the Karo language has six vowels such as /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /É™/, and /É”/, and is similar to the Simalungun language except vowel /É™/. To compare the vowels, the researcher placed similar vowels to compare the form between both languages. The syllables's position, /a/, /i/, /u/, and /e/, is put at the beginning to make the syllable manageable, and the syllable /É”/ is placed at the end of the word. This study uses the software Praat to measure the vowel formant. Afterward, the data are calculated using the F1 and F2 from the spectrogram in Praat software. The results data shows that the highest formant in vowel /a/, /i/, /u/, and /e/ comes from KL, and the highest vowel /É”/ from SL.
