Abstract

Scientific explanation is an essential skill in chemistry learning because it connects scientific principles and objective evidence. This study aims to describe the application of guided inquiry-based learning in thin-layer chromatography experiments of synthetic and natural food coloring to develop students' scientific explanations in learning applications. This study used a pre-experimental method with a post-test only one-shot case study design. In the implementation of learning, the implementation rate reached 87%. The average scores for worksheets and scientific explanation tests were 78 and 79, respectively. This indicates that the application of guided inquiry-based worksheets through TLC experiments is practical in developing students' scientific explanation skills. This experiment can be adopted in broader chemistry learning contexts by integrating guided inquiry with thin-layer chromatography using real food colorants, thereby fostering scientific thinking and providing students with hands-on experience that emphasizes the relevance of chemistry in everyday life.

Abstract

The demand for boards continues to increase every year, while overexploitation of wood leads to environmental degradation and forest loss. On the other hand, eggshell and water hyacinth waste continues to grow without optimal utilization. This research aims to make composite boards based on eggshell waste and water hyacinth fibers and analyze the potential of ethnoscience in science learning. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with a literature and documentation study approach. The materials used in this experiment are eggshell waste, water hyacinth fiber, and polyester resin. The composite board was made by mixing water hyacinth fiber and eggshell powder as reinforcing materials and polyester resin as a binding matrix. The results showed that the resulting composite board had a solid structure with a brownish beige color and a slightly rough surface texture. The calcium carbonate content of the eggshell provides stiffness, while the water hyacinth fiber increases the flexibility of the board. Theoretically, this material has the potential to be an environmentally friendly alternative for non-structural applications. In addition, this project can also be applied in ethnoscience-based science learning to integrate physics, chemistry, and biology concepts with local wisdom.

Abstract

Developing students’ psychomotor skills is insufficient through theoretical learning in the classroom alone. Still, it must be supported by contextual, practical activities, such as fermenting taro tape with dragon fruit peel, through the application of project-based worksheets. This study aims to analyze students’ ability to complete project-based worksheets and the development of students’ psychomotor skills through testing the characteristics of taro tape. The method employed was a pre-experimental design with a one-shot case study involving tenth-grade students at a senior high school in Bandung City as the research subjects. The assessment instruments included a six-stage project-based worksheet, psychomotor tests covering three characteristics, and product and presentation assessments with eight and six aspects, respectively. Project-based worksheets were implemented in several stages: identifying problems, designing projects, conducting experiments, developing prototypes, evaluating products, and finalizing. The study’s results showed that students’ ability to complete project-based worksheets achieved an average score of 92, categorized as very good. The ability to complete project-based worksheets in the product evaluation stage received the highest score of 100, while the experimentation and prototype development stages received the lowest score of 88. Additionally, the development of students’ psychomotor skills, as measured by the Taro Tape Characteristic Test, showed an average score of 95, categorized as very good. Psychomotor skills in organoleptic tests received the highest score of 100, while the TAT test received the lowest score of 85. Implementing project-based worksheets proved effective in developing students’ psychomotor skills through the stages of project-based learning. These findings underscore the importance of using project-based worksheets as a contextual learning approach that supports chemistry education and fosters active student engagement in developing psychomotor skills.
