Abstract

Tekanan darah diukur secara real-time. ABSTRACT Background: Vehicle exhaust emissions are the most significant source of air pollution, especially in urban areas. SO2 is one of the pollutants produced by car exhaust emissions. The number of private vehicles, especially fossil fuel vehicles, is increasing rapidly in Samarinda City. These vehicles have the potential to increase SO2 concentrations and can have an adverse on health. This study aims to determine the risk of exposure to SO2 concentrations among street sweepers and the relationship between the incidence of hypertension and SO2 intake. Methods: This study used an environmental health risk assessment approach. The EHRA approach estimated the risk faced by street sweepers due to exposure to SO2 in Samarinda City highways.  This study’s population consisted of all street sweepers working at four specified roadways.  The sample, comprising 61 participants, was selected using a to tal sampling technique. The SO2 concentration measurement technique involved an impinger with spectrophotometer analysis. Blood pressure was measured in real-time. The chi-square test was used to show differences in proportions between intake and hypertension variables. Results: The SO2 concentration, measured at 18.18 mg/Nm3, was found to be below the required environmental quality standard limit (< 150 mg/Nm3). The results of the chi-square test showed no difference in the proportion of hypertension incidents with SO2 intake (p-value = 1,000). However, workers with SO2 intake of >0.0012 mg/kg/day showed a higher likelihood of developing hypertension than street sweepers with an intake of >0.0012 mg/kg/day (OR = 1.111).Conclusion: The air quality in the highways of Samarinda City is deemed safe, especially in terms of the sulfur dioxide parameter. Street sweepers are not at risk of experiencing health problems.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major public health concern, particularly in tropical regions such as Indonesia, where it has persisted for over five decades. In 2023, Samarinda ranked third among ten regencies or cities in East Kalimantan with the highest number of DHF cases. One of the primary health centers consistently ranking among the top three with the highest DHF cases in Samarinda from 2021 to 2023 is Temindung Public Health Center. Environmental conditions and community behavior are believed to play significant roles in the transmission of this disease. This study aimed to identify factors associated with DHF incidence, including the condition of water storage containers (TPA), lighting, the presence of mosquito larvae, and Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) behavior. A cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach was used, involving 138 respondents selected through purposive sampling within the working area of Temindung Public Health Center. Data were collected using questionnaires, direct observation, and lighting measurements, and analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed significant associations between the availability of TPA covers (p = 0.037), household lighting (p = 0.017), PSN behavior (p = 0.000), and the presence of mosquito larvae (p = 0.000) with DHF incidence. These factors are interrelated in increasing the risk of DHF transmission in residential areas. Proper management of water storage, adequate household lighting, mosquito larvae control, and improved PSN behavior are crucial in reducing DHF cases. Active involvement of both the community and public health centers is essential in implementing continuous and sustainable preventive measures.

Abstract

Background : Benzene is a volatile organic compound widely used in industrial sectors such as petrochemicals, paints, solvents, and the manufacture of rubber and plastics. Continuous exposure to benzene vapor in occupational settings can disrupt the hematopoietic system, leading to anemia. Objective : This review was systematically conducted to examine the relationship between benzene exposure and the incidence of anemia among industrial workers. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The method followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Literature sources were obtained from three databases: PubMed, Wiley Online Library, and Science Direct, with publication years limited to 2020–2025. Included articles were English-language, full-text publications that reported observational or experimental studies assessing the hematopoietic effects of benzene leading to anemia. Results : The search yielded three studies meeting the inclusion criteria, all conducted in China and Iran. The main findings indicated that low-level benzene exposure (<1 ppm) significantly reduced erythrocyte and leukocyte counts. Additionally, genetic variations in the ATM and H2AX genes were associated with increased susceptibility to hematological abnormalities among individuals exposed to BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene). Elevated expression of microRNA Let-7e-5p was suggested to play a role in disrupting apoptosis and cell proliferation in bone marrow, contributing to hematopoietic dysfunction. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Overall, the reviewed evidence demonstrates that benzene’s hematotoxic effects can occur even at very low exposure levels. These findings highlight the importance of workplace environmental monitoring, consistent use of personal protective equipment, and routine blood examinations to enable early detection of anemia resulting from chronic benzene exposure

Abstract

Background : Diarrhea remains a global public health problem with high morbidity and mortality rates. Environmental conditions such as poor sanitation infrastructure and hygiene practices have the potential to increase the risk of diarrhea. Objective : This study aims to analyze the relationship between environmental factors and the incidence of diarrhea in East Kalimantan Province based on big data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI). Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This study employed a cross-sectional design using secondary data from 15,854 SKI respondents. Variables included gender, education, drinking water sources, water quality and treatment, storage containers, wastewater disposal, waste management, sanitation access, and hygiene practices. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and logistic regression to determine independent environmental factors influencing diarrhea incidence. Results : The prevalence of diarrhea was 2.1%. Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between the incidence of diarrhea and education (p=0.001), drinking water source (p=0.003), physical quality of drinking water (p=0.000), raw water source (p=0.012), waste management (p=0.002), and sanitation hygiene (p=0.000). In the models of multivariable logistic regression analysis, it was found that physical quality of drinking water (AOR=2.058; p<0.001), level of education (AOR=2.008; p<0.001), and waste management (AOR=1.276; p=0.032) were the main determinants of diarrhea incidence. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Poor drinking water quality, low levels of education, and inadequate waste management increase the risk of diarrhea in East Kalimantan. Efforts to improve water quality, environmental health education, and household-based waste management need to be strengthened to reduce the incidence of diarrhea.
