Abstract

Stunting remains a chronic nutritional problem that requires serious attention, including in the working area of Langgudu Public Health Center. Maternal health conditions during pregnancy, particularly knowledge of anemia and adherence to consuming iron-folic acid supplementation or blood supplement tablets, are suspected to be associated with the risk of giving birth to a stunted child. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between pregnant women’s knowledge of anemia and their level of adherence to consuming blood supplement tablets with the risk of giving birth to a stunted child in the working area of Langgudu Public Health Center. This study used a quantitative analytical observational method with a case-control design. The sample consisted of 186 respondents, including 93 mothers with stunted children as the case group and 93 mothers with children with normal growth status as the control group. Primary data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets, while secondary data were obtained from the public health center’s nutritional status monitoring reports. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that pregnant women’s knowledge of anemia was not significantly associated with stunting incidence (p = 0.281). In contrast, adherence to consuming blood supplement tablets showed a significant association with stunting incidence (p = 0.003; OR = 0.404). Therefore, pregnant women’s adherence to consuming blood supplement tablets is an important factor related to the risk of giving birth to a stunted child. Accordingly, strengthening education, monitoring blood supplement tablet consumption, and providing nutritional counseling during pregnancy need to be improved.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health issue with long-term effects on the growth and development of children, particularly in regions with limited access to health resources. Various factors such as economic status, parenting practices, and access to health facilities contribute to its prevalence. This study aims to analyze the determinants influencing stunting among children under five years old in Sambane Village, Langgudu District, Bima Regency. A cross-sectional approach was used with data collected from 50 respondents through questionnaires. Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test was conducted to examine the relationship between independent variables—namely economic status, water source, toilet type, mother's body mass index (BMI), mother's education, mother's occupation, mother's age, child vaccination status, and frequency of posyandu visits—and the prevalence of stunting. The findings revealed that economic status (χ² = 36.11, p < 0.001), water source (χ² = 29.17, p < 0.001), toilet type (χ² = 34.38, p < 0.001), maternal education (χ² = 36.11, p < 0.001), and maternal occupation (χ² = 25.69, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with stunting. These results highlight that strengthening socioeconomic conditions and improving access to basic health facilities are critical strategies in stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Stunting—characterized by height that is inappropriate for a child's age—is a health issue that poses a long-term threat to a toddler's well-being if left unaddressed. This condition reflects chronic, persistent nutritional deficiency, which has the potential to hinder physical growth, intellectual development, and future productivity. This study aimed to analyze the associations between exclusive breastfeeding, early cessation of breastfeeding, and recurrent infections among stunted toddlers in the working area of the Langgudu Timur Community Health Center (Puskesmas). Methods: A quantitative study was conducted using a case-control design and a retrospective approach involving 90 respondents—mothers of toddlers with either normal nutritional status or stunted status. Sampling was carried out using a combination of probability and purposive sampling. Results: Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test revealed significant associations between stunting and the variables studied: exclusive breastfeeding (p-value = 0.003 < 0.05; OR = 4.64), early cessation of breastfeeding (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05; OR = 11.00), and recurrent infections (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05; OR = 5.38). It is recommended that all stakeholders strengthen stunting prevention efforts by promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, continuing breastfeeding until the child is two years old or older, and enhancing early prevention and management of infections in toddlers.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem among toddlers, characterized by impaired height-for-age growth. The occurrence of stunting can be influenced by various factors, including the quality of care, adequate nutritional intake, and the family’s socioeconomic status. This study aims to determine the relationship between parenting practices, nutritional intake, and socioeconomic status with the prevalence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in the service area of the Penanae Community Health Center, Bima City. This study employed a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design and a cross-sectional method. The sample consisted of 78 toddlers selected using simple random sampling, comprising 39 toddlers in the stunting group and 39 toddlers in the non-stunting group. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire on parenting practices and socioeconomic status, nutritional intake measurements using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and height measurements based on the height-for-age (H/A) indicator. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. The results showed an association between parenting practices (p<0.001), nutritional intake (p=0.002), and socioeconomic status (p=0.042) and the incidence of stunting. Multivariate analysis showed that parenting practices were the most influential factor on the incidence of stunting, with an OR of 6.318 (95% CI: 2.104–18.973; p=0.001) Based on the research findings, improving the quality of child-rearing practices, meeting nutritional needs, and providing support for families’ economic conditions should be considered as measures to prevent stunting in toddlers.
