Abstract

Introduction: The rising nurse workload and its impact on performance have become a significant concern in hospital inpatient settings. Increased patient numbers and high Bed Occupancy Rates (BOR) have contributed to greater pressure on nursing staff, potentially affecting the quality of care provided. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of workload on nurse performance in hospital inpatient settings through a comprehensive review of existing literature. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted, utilizing national and international journals. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) method was applied in four stages: identification (n = 16,816), screening (n = 60), followed by the application of the PICO framework to determine feasibility and relevance, which resulted in 15 articles being included. The literature search involved accessing electronic databases such as Cochrane, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Result: The review of 15 articles revealed that nurse performance is significantly influenced by multiple factors, with high workload being one of the main contributors. Of the 15 articles analyzed, 14 confirmed that high workload is a major challenge nurses face in performing their daily tasks, leading to potential declines in performance. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study confirms that a high workload, especially in hospital inpatient rooms, has a significant negative impact on nurse performance. Addressing workload management through staffing optimization and effective policies is essential to improving the quality of care and ensuring better health outcomes.

Abstract

Kemampuan berpikir kritis diukur dengan Instrumen the Seventeen Dimensions of Critical Thinking and Written Examination dan lembar ujian tertulis. Kata Kunci: berpikir kritis; mahasiswa keperawatan; pemetaan konsepAbstract  Nursing educators must possess the ability to assess and enhance students' critical thinking skills in the formulation of nursing care plans. Numerous research indicate that the concept mapping technique might positively impact the learning process. This study seeks to determine the impact of the concept mapping method on the critical thinking abilities of nursing students. This research employed a quantitative design utilising a quasi-experimental methodology. This research encompassed 43 second-year students at the School of Nursing. Critical thinking skills were assessed with the Seventeen Dimensions of Critical Thinking and Written Examination Instrument, along with written exam sheets. The acquired data were analysed utilising the t-test, Wilcoxon test, Repeated ANOVA test, and Friedman test. The study's results indicated a significant difference in the mean scores of critical thinking and written examinations post-intervention (each p = 0.00). The concept mapping method enhances students' critical thinking by elucidating relationships between concepts, systematically organising and categorising material, fostering clear and rational thought, and facilitating knowledge-based decision-making. Nursing professors are expected to enable students to employ concept mapping in their learning process. Keywords: conceptual mapping; critical thinking; nursing students

Abstract

The nursing environment is unique and has the potential for conflicts to arise. Effective conflict management is crucial for redirecting disputes in a constructive direction. Emotional intelligence , as an internal personality characteristic, significantly influences conflict management. This research aims to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence  and conflict management strategies. A quantitative methodology was employed, utilizing Spearman Rho correlation analysis to analyze the data. The sample in this study consisted of 107 female practicing nurses with multiple roles in the inpatient ward of RSUD Sumedang, selected using the proportional random sampling technique. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, indicating a significant relationship between the level of emotional intelligence  and the conflict management strategies of competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating, with significance levels and correlation coefficients, namely <.001 (-0.510), <.001 (0.614), 0.038 (0.201), <.001 (-0.757), and <.001 (0.688), respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the level of emotional intelligence  is positively correlated with conflict management strategies such as collaborating, compromising, and accommodating. Meanwhile, conflict management strategies involving avoiding and competing show a negative correlation. This demonstrates that selecting a constructive conflict management strategy requires a high level of emotional intelligence . Conversely, nurses possessing elevated emotional intelligence  may lean towards avoiding or refraining from aggressive competition in conflict situations to preserve positive relationships among colleagues. Hence, there is a need for comprehensive development of emotional intelligence  and conflict management training.

Abstract

Leadership is the process of influencing or setting an example for followers through communication, with the aim of achieving organizational goals. The issue of nurse motivation in hospitals remains a current concern. This does not necessarily mean that nurses are underperforming, but it may be influenced by ineffective leadership, which can affect their level of work motivation. The objective of this research is to assess the correlation between the leadership style of ward heads and the work motivation of nurses in hospitals, as well as to identify the leadership styles commonly used by ward heads. The research method employed is systematic literature review. The research sample involves all practicing nurses in hospitals. The review of 11 research articles, spanning from 2018 to 2023 and originating from Indonesia, Timor-leste, and Jordan, indicates a correlation between the leadership style of ward heads and the work motivation of nurses in hospitals. The democratic leadership style is frequently used by ward heads in hospitals, as identified in the study.

Abstract

Burnout is a syndrome that is experienced by many health professionals, including nurses who work in high-pressure conditions. In Indonesia, the prevalence of burnout in nurses reached 27.7% and in Jakarta it was 27.3%. One of the factors that causes burnout is the lack of organizational support, especially from superiors. Effective leadership styles are needed to address this problem, one of which is transformational leadership styles. This style plays an important role in improving the motivation, emotional well-being, and performance of nurses. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between transformational leadership style and the incidence of burnout in nurses to understand whether leadership style can significantly reduce burnout in nurses. This study used the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with the PRISMA method to identify relevant studies related to the relationship between transformational leadership style and burnout in nurses. Of the 556 articles that have passed the selection stage, 5 articles are ready to be synthesized. After the analysis, the findings from five studies showed that transformational leadership styles had an impact on nurse fatigue levels. It has been shown that transformational leadership styles affect nurses' burnout levels, which in turn can increase their motivation to deliver health services.
