Abstract

In numerous developing nations, the impact of cigarette consumption on poverty often goes unnoticed by policymakers. This study endeavours to explore the correlation between household expenditure on cigarettes and levels of poverty and welfare. Beyond household spending, it also investigates the influence of regional functional expenditures and the prevalence of open unemployment on poverty and welfare. The examination encompasses 100 regencies and cities across three provinces: East Java (38 regencies and cities), West Java (27 regencies and cities), and Central Java (35 regencies and cities). Utilizing secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, collected in 2021, employing a cross-sectional approach, this study employs multiple linear regression analysis via the Stata 17 program to discern the impact of various factors, including household spending, regional functional spending, and control variables, on poverty and welfare. The findings reveal that household cigarette consumption significantly exacerbates poverty, indicating that an increase in such consumption escalates poverty rates. Conversely, the second estimation model demonstrates that increased household expenditure on cigarettes significantly diminishes welfare levels, underscoring the adverse impact of heightened smoking consumption on overall welfare.

Abstract

Tourist satisfaction and tourism destinations create a value for tourists. The value of specific tourism destinations leads to individual emotional attachments, which are a manifestation of a sense of nostalgia. This study aims to investigate the role of nostalgia on the tourist satisfaction at culinary tourism destinations. Food quality, destination environment, and services all contribute to the nostalgia. The data was collected through LimeSurvey from a total of 300 respondents from Central Java and Yogyakarta and was analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results show that the food quality, destination environment, and services positively affect the nostalgia. Further, the nostalgia also has a strong significant influence on the tourist satisfaction. These findings imply that managers of culinary tourism must be able to provide positive values (impressions) to the tourists by offering unique service, quality, or destination environment compared to other destinations. It is expected that the tourists have a positive memorability which simultaneously create a revisit intention, which is in line with the tourists satisfaction.JEL:D91, D90, Z32.

Abstract

Roads are strategic infrastructure that support connectivity and regional development. The deterioration of road quality can hinder mobility and suppress economic activity. This study analyzes the factors affecting road quality, particularly those related to road damage, by emphasizing the role of the Special Allocation Fund (DAK), institutional quality measured through the democracy index and corruption cases, and political competition. A quantitative approach using panel data regression was applied to 33 provinces in Indonesia over the 2021–2023 period. The visualization results reveal disparities in road quality between Java and non-Java regions. Statistical tests show that DAK and institutional quality do not have a significant effect on road quality. Conversely, political competition has a significant effect, indicating that healthy political competition promotes accountability and efficiency in infrastructure management. The study also finds that the control variables—vehicle volume and per capita income—have a positive and significant relationship with the ratio of damaged roads. The implications of this study highlight the need to improve Indonesia’s road infrastructure quality by strengthening political competition and enhancing budget governance.

Abstract

Cultural poverty in developing societies often emerges from adherence to traditional practices that impose significant economic burdens on communities. In Batak Toba society, the sinamot (bride price) tradition has evolved from a symbolic gesture of respect into a status marker, creating substantial financial pressures on families. While culturally significant within the dalihan na tolu kinship system, contemporary sinamot practices frequently exceed families' economic capabilities, potentially perpetuating cycles of poverty. This study examines how the sinamot tradition contributes to cultural poverty formation in Batak Toba communities and explores community perceptions regarding this phenomenon. The research contributes to understanding cultural poverty as a product of culturally sanctioned practices rather than character deficiencies, offering insights for developing culturally sensitive poverty alleviation approaches. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach, conducting in-depth interviews with seven informants including married couples, parents, and traditional leaders aged 40-65 years, with data analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro software following Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings reveal that sinamot functions dually as both a symbol of honor (hasangapon) and an economic burden, with three primary mechanisms driving cultural poverty: social pressure to maintain high sinamot values as markers of family status, consumerist tendencies in wedding celebrations where families host grand events beyond their means, and compliance with traditional values motivated by fear of social sanctions. Sinamot amounts vary significantly based on bride's education level, ranging from IDR 10-15 million for high school graduates to IDR 20-150 million for master's degree holders, excluding additional celebration costs. Families frequently incur debts requiring two to three years to repay, limiting investments in education, health, and productive endeavors. The study identifies emerging shifts among younger generations adopting more realistic attitudes toward sinamot while maintaining cultural respect, and some traditional communities have begun simplifying ceremonial requirements. Theoretically, through Baudrillard's consumerism theory and Bourdieu's symbolic capital concept, traditional celebrations have transformed into arenas for symbolic consumption serving as social signifiers rather than authentic cultural expressions. Cultural poverty in Batak society emerges not from ignorance but from adherence to culturally legitimate practices, requiring dialogue between traditional leaders and communities to balance cultural preservation with economic sustainability.

Abstract

This study uses grounded theory method, in which the approach taken is by field work observations. The observation instruments used in the field is in-depth interviews with list of questions. The results showed that the effectiveness of the role of community groups in an effort to improve the welfare center for the furniture industry is very high; it is seen from the indicators of economic well-being of the community members and the increased ownership of assets / capital investment for reproduction. According to the theory of success in accumulating assets and undertake reinvestment by community groups, there is a characteristic or a form of social entrepreneurship.  The community group’s role effectiveness is also demonstrated by the increase in the group members' productivity. This is in line with Input-Process-Output Model theory of Strategic Entrepreneurship, which stated that community groups successfully processes input and outputs which provide profits for the members, their own institution and social groups. While the barriers faced by community groups in the effort improving the welfare for the furniture industry are: internal and external. Internal obstacles are the low creation and innovation as the members' low formal education background; moreover transparency lack is also a source of internal constraints for community groups. The external constraint is due to negative stereotype against community groups and the post power syndrome of senior public figures.
