Abstract

Women’s role in family resilience has never ended. Even, their roles keep increasing and changing over time while remaining unexplored. This research discusses women’s role in family resilience drawing from the case of women cadres and non-cadres who were involved in the program for family resilience run by P2WKSS (women’s organization at village level). This research used a qualitative method and employed interviews and direct and participant observation to collect data in Cidadap Village in West Java. Data of this research were analyzed based on indicators of women’s role in the  family development and resilience, named iBangga (Indonesian Family Development Indexes).  This research  found  some important findings on women’s role in family resilience in the context of Sundanese culture in West Java. Women’s position in the family based on Sundanese gender norms, put them in the dominant and crucial roles in family resilience. In the family, women play roles as mothers and as wives; and they are responsible to maintain the family order and peace;  and to raise the children; while at the same time must serve their husband. In society, they are responsible to preserve gender norms and values and transmit it to the next generations. They also become the pioneer in the government program implemented in the village which targets to improve family resilience.

Abstract

Tea plantations have contributed essentially to the Indonesia economy. It also provides jobs for people living surrounding the plantation; although the wages are limited. Despite the low wage, however, working in the tea plantation has become the backbone for the household income of the tea pickers. This research aims to explore and describe views and opinions of tea plantation workers in southern highland Bandung about their job and how it means to them. It also explores how workers develop work culture and ethic and how they perceive it in contrast to core values of the tea plantation company. The daily living of the workers were explored to reveal local Sundanese cultural values that might underpin their work culture and ethic. Using a qualitative method with an ethnographic model, this research collected primary data through participant observation and in-depth interviews with tea plantation workers. The research findings suggest that tea plantation workers apply the concept of leutik asal nirilik (little but continuously); which refers to their income. This concept is rooted in the local Sundanese values of acceptance and perseverance; and this motivated them to keep up the job despite some possibilities to access other jobs. Workers view their job as meaningful despite the low wages and have a sense of belonging to the job. However, they do have some aspirations and visions about their career and welfare. They have a work culture and ethic which are  in line with the core values of the tea plantation company, named AKHLAK, which has been introduced to them only recently.

Abstract

Small, Micro, and Medium scale Enterprise (SMME) mostly begin in the form of family based business. In this type of business, division of labor is also based on the family division of labor, which is mostly based on the gender division of labor. Drawing from the cases of six SMME in Leuwiliang market at Bogor City, this study aims at analyzing how gender values, norms, and ideology have influenced the gender based division of labor in the family and business of SMME. The study was conducted using a qualitative method with a case study model. Findings of this study suggest that all of the six SMME divide the labor based on gender and that patriarchy has much influence on it. Both husband and wife are involved in the business, but the portion and contribution of each of them are different. Some SMME tend to divide the labor in more patriarchal ways than others. The difference comes from gender values, norms, and ideology believed and practiced by the family. The more patriarchal the family, the more their tendency to divide work based on gender; and the more they give power to men than women. These findings also suggest that in SMME, gender inequality still persists and puts women in the disadvantageous position despite their growing contribution in the family business.
