Abstract

Indonesia still faces the Triple Burden of Malnutrition, which can impact the dietary choices of adolescents to balance their nutritional intake and, simultaneously, emphasize the need for effective nutrition education. This study aimed to determine the effect of nutrition education delivered through the UNAGI game and videos on knowledge and nutritional intake of high school students. This quasi-experimental study was conducted with students from Public Senior High School 12 in Bekasi City, where the participants were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention was provided once a week for two consecutive weeks. Knowledge was measured using a questionnaire, and food intake was assessed through 24-hour food recall. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test for the difference between groups and paired t-test/Wilcoxon for pre-post comparisons, with α significant level of 5%. Before the intervention, there was no significant difference in knowledge and dietary intake between the two groups. Post-intervention, a significant improvement in nutrition knowledge (p-value of 0.000) was noted in the intervention group exposed to the snake and ladder nutrition game. However, there were no significant changes in energy intake (p-value of 0.162), fat intake (p-value of 0.144), sugar consumption (p-value of 0.066), and salt consumption (p-value of 0.944). The findings support the recommendation of utilizing UNAGI games for nutrition education in the digital era as a valuable alternative to visual media, effectively contributing to enhanced nutritional understanding among adolescents.

Abstract

This study explored the effect of Sauropus androgynus, papaya leaves, and mung beans as mixed galactagogue drinks on breastmilk volume, frequency, and duration among urban postpartum mothers in Jakarta. A quasi-experimental study with 60 postpartum mothers divided in intervention and control groups was conducted. The intervention group was administered with a 400-cc traditional galactagogue drink daily within 4 weeks of postpartum, while the control group received 3 times breastfeeding counselling. The breastmilk volume was measured using the evaporative water loss method on mothers’ weight at the first, second, third-, and fourth-week consumption. The mean difference of breastmilk volume, breastfeeding frequency, and duration between the intervention and control groups was calculated by bivariate analysis using an independent sample t-test. The breastmilk volume was not different between both groups on the first and second week (1st:622.93±289.24 and 507.68±231.28, p=0.094; 2nd:683.00±252.42 and 582.58±225.42, p=0.110), however, the intervention group had higher volume than the control group in the third and fourth week (3rd:801.43±273.35 and 656.24±214.43, p=0.026; 4th=908.52±271.27 and 756.69±196.29, p=0.016). No significant difference was observed in the breastfeeding frequency and duration among the groups. In conclusion, the new galactagogue mixed drink consumption has the potential to increase breastmilk production and enhance a mother’s confidence to continue breastfeeding.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem affecting child growth and remains a challenge in East Jakarta, particularly in Pondok Kopi and Klender. This program aimed to improve the nutritional status of stunted children through family-based nutrition education and assistance. Activities were conducted from September to November 2023 in the Duren Sawit Public Health Center area. Interventions included nutrition education, monitoring of weight and height, dietary intake recording, and home environment observation. Results showed improved maternal knowledge about food variety and nutritional status improvements in some children. Approximately 20–25% showed progress in weight-for-age, height-for-age, and weight-for-height indicators. Despite fluctuations, the interventions had a positive impact on child growth. Environmental factors also influenced nutrition, so sanitation education was provided. The program demonstrated that family-based education and assistance can help reduce stunting, though continued and personalized interventions are still needed.

Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a prevalent digestive disorder among university students. The factors included impaired lifestyle habits, including inadequate sleep, elevated stress, and unhealthy eating patterns. Objective: To examine the correlation between sleep quality, stress levels, and eating patterns with the incidence of GERD among university students in Yogyakarta. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2025 in PGRI Yogyakarta University, involving 410 university students. We used validated questionnaires for data collection, including the GERD-Q, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21), and an eating pattern questionnaire. We used chi-square tests and correlation tests with a 5% level of significance for the statistical analysis. Results: About 20% of respondents were identified as having GERD symptoms. Students with poor sleep quality were 2.94 times to develop GERD (p=0.001). There was a strong association between stress levels and GERD (p<0.001; r=0.382). Students who have disordered eating were 3.2 times more likely to get GERD (p=0.000). Conclusion: The prevalence of GERD among university students is significantly associated with poor sleep quality, increased stress levels, and disordered eating patterns. Health education aimed at promoting lifestyle changes plays a crucial role in preventing GERD among university students.

Abstract

Osteoporosis commonly occurs among pre-elderly and elderly women, characterized by decreased bone mass and changes in the microarchitecture of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures. The study aimed to analyze the association between calcium intake, vitamin D intake, and osteoporosis-related knowledge with the risk of osteoporosis among pre-elderly and elderly women. A cross sectional study was conducted involving 127 pre-elderly and elderly women in Bangunjiwo, Bantul, selected through purposive sampling. Data collected included subject characteristics, calcium, and vitamin D intake (measured using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ)), osteoporosis knowledge (measured using a structured questionnaire), and osteoporosis risk (assessed using the OPAQ-PF questionnaire). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of α<0,05. The results showed that more than 90% of both pre-elderly and elderly subjects were at risk of osteoporosis. A significant association was found between calcium intake and osteoporosis risk (p<0,001), as well as between knowledge and osteoporosis risk (p=0,041). However, no significant association was found between vitamin D intake and osteoporosis risk (p=0,071). In conclusion, this study identified calcium intake and knowledge as factors associated with the risk of osteoporosis among pre-elderly and elderly women, while vitamin D intake was not significantly associated with osteoporosis risk.

Abstract

Mukbang is a video show featuring someone consuming large amounts of food, and it has now become a popular phenomenon among the public, especially young adults. This show has the potential to influence food consumption behaviour and impact nutritional status. Additionally, emotional eating behaviour is known to influence energy intake and nutritional balance in individuals. This study aims to analyse the relationship between the habit of watching mukbang videos and emotional eating behaviour with nutritional status among students at PGRI University Yogyakarta. This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design with 410 active students as respondents. Data were collected using the Mukbang Addiction Scale (MAS) and Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ) distributed. Nutritional status was determined based on body mass index (BMI), and relationship analysis was conducted using Fisher’s Exact test. The results showed that 61.0% of respondents had normal nutritional status, 32.4% were overweight, and 6.6% were underweight. Furthermore, there was a significant association between the habit of watching mukbang videos and nutritional status (p<0.05), as well as between emotional eating behaviour and nutritional status (p<0.05). These findings highlight the importance of education on the influence of food-related content and emotional management as part of efforts to maintain a balanced nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is prevalent among female adolescents. Food-based approaches have been developed to improve hemoglobin levels. However, their effectiveness has not been thoroughly evaluated yet. Objectives: This review aims to analyze the effectiveness of food-based interventions, either alone or in combination with iron supplementation, in improving hemoglobin (Hb) levels among anemic female adolescents in Indonesia. Methods: This review was conducted using the PICO framework and followed the PRISMA guidelines. Articles were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Garuda, and ResearchGate. Eligible studies included experimental designs with control groups involving female adolescents aged 10-18 years, published between 2014 and 2024. Interventions consisted of food-based products, while comparators included iron tablets alone or in combination with a placebo. Hemoglobin levels were the primary outcome assessed. Discussions: Of the 1,142 studies identified, 13 met the inclusion criteria and were included in a systematic review. Commonly used dietary interventions included iron-rich food sources, such as fish and nuts, and vitamin C-rich food sources, including dates and guava. Local food-based interventions were associated with increases in hemoglobin levels, with reported Hb improvements ranging from 0.8 to 2.7 g/dL. Several studies demonstrated statistically significant differences both within intervention groups and between intervention and control groups. Although effect sizes varied, most interventions showed meaningful benefits. Conclusions: Local food-based nutrition interventions in Indonesia, particularly those combed with iron supplementation, consistently improve hemoglobin levels and show promise as effective strategies to reduce anemia among female adolescents.
