Abstract

Background. Malnutrition is a global problem with high morbidity and mortality rates. The fulfillment of adequate nutrition, especially in the early stage of life, is very important for growth and development. Early nutrition in a child’s life begins with exclusive breastfeeding which contains all the elements of nutrients needed. When breast milk is not sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of infants, specific nutritional interventions in the form of complementary foods are required. A review about the effect of the right time of complementary foods is needed to ensure optimal nutritional status. Objective. Analyzed the effect of timing of introduction to complementary foods on nutritional status in infants aged 6 – 24 months. Methods. A systematic literature review using PRISMA-P 2020 by reviewing studies obtained through databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Result. A total of 7 literatures were obtained with 5 literatures having significant results. The incidence of stunting is 1.21-13.3 times higher in complementary foods given at <6 months of age and 1.64-fold in >8 months. The incidence of underweight occurs 2.14 times in complementary foods given at the age of 4-5 months. The incidence of wasting has a 2.86-fold risk in complementary foods given at the age of 0-1 months. The risk of being overweight can occur 1.50-1.66 times in complementary foods given at less than 6 months. Conclusion. Early (<6 months) and late (>8 months) introduction to complementary foods has an effect on the incidence of stunting, underweight, wasting, and overweight in infants aged 6-24 months. Keywords: Malnutrition, Complementary Foods, Nutritional Status AbstrakLatar belakang. Abstract

One of the degenerative conditions frequently occurring in joints is Osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a common form of joint inflammation, the most prevalent one. Individual factors such as age, gender, body mass indices, occupation, family history, injury history, and body posture can increase the risk of knee OA. Knee OA is distinguished based on etiology, namely primary and secondary. Primary knee OA is often associated with genetic factors and natural aging, while secondary knee OA is caused by injuries, structural abnormalities, or other medical conditions. The purpose is to determine the relationship between risk factors in patients with knee OA. This research employed a cross-sectional design involving 56 patients selected through a total sampling technique at Al-Fauzan Hospital. The findings of the study reveal a significant association between the onset of OA and both age (p=0.000) and body posture (p=0.000). Nevertheless, factors such as gender (p=0.535), body mass indices (p=0.705), occupation (p=0.942), family history (p=0.321), and injury history (p=1.000) exhibit no correlation with knee OA. Age emerges as the most impactful factor linked to the occurrence of OA (OR=51.358). A notable correlation exists between age and body posture as risk factors for knee OA in patients. The probability of developing OA increases by a factor of 51.358 as individuals grow older compared to their younger counterparts.

Abstract

The most prevalent primary tumor of the central nervous system is meningioma, and the incidence increases with age. This tumour can be detected through radiological examination and can be classified based on the results of anatomical pathology examination. A 48-year-old woman presented to the hospital with complaints of left-sided progressive headache since several years ago without any other complaints. Imaging examination showed a lesion in the falx cerebri of the sinistra aspect that suggested atypical meningioma. The woman decided to undergo craniotomy resection surgery and histopathological analysis. Based on the WHO classification, the histopathology results revealed that it was a micro and chordoidal meningioma. The patient had significant improvement in her symptoms postoperatively and the tumour size decreased on follow-up imaging. This case report demonstrates the importance of education about dangerous tumour headaches.

Abstract

Encephalomalacia is the softening of brain tissue resulting from hemorrhagic contusions, infarctions, or diffuse axonal injury, which can develop months or even years after head trauma. Encephalomalacia may occur in adults, albeit rarely, following acquired brain injuries such as infection, trauma, or infarction. We report a 41-year-old male who presented with headache and memory loss, symptoms that developed one year after a motorcycle accident in which he sustained a head injury. Imaging revealed hypodense lesions in the left temporoparietal lobe, consistent with encephalomalacia and associated ventriculomegaly. This case highlights the significance of detailed clinical and radiological assessments in diagnosing encephalomalacia, underscoring the importance of early intervention and management to prevent long-term neurological complications.

Abstract

Postoperative Epidural Hematoma (PEDH) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication following craniotomy for intracranial tumor resection, particularly in elderly patients. The incidence of postoperative epidural hematoma is estimated to be approximately 1-2% of intracranial surgeries, and its development is often attributed to rapid reductions in intracranial pressure, excessive cerebrospinal fluid drainage, or coagulation abnormalities. This report presents a 71-year-old female who developed PEDH following craniotomy for meningioma. The patient initially showed stable postoperative recovery but experienced sudden neurological deterioration, prompting an urgent CT scan that revealed an epidural hematoma. Immediate surgical intervention was performed to evacuate the hematoma, leading to gradual neurological improvement. This case highlights the importance of early detection, rapid intervention, and careful perioperative management to optimize outcomes in patients with PEDH

Abstract

The aqueductal web is a rare congenital anomaly where a thin membrane obstructs the aqueduct of Sylvius, disrupting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and leading to obstructive hydrocephalus. This condition can be challenging to diagnosis, particularly in settings with limited access to advanced imaging. This report discusses a six-month-old male infant presenting with progressive head enlargement, vomiting, and irritability. A head CT scan revealed dilated lateral and third ventricles suggestive of obstructive hydrocephalus, likely caused by an aqueductal web. Due to limited access to MRI and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) facilities in the local healthcare setting, a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt was chosen as the treatment. The patient underwent VP shunt placement, which successfully diverted excess CSF, reduced intracranial pressure, and improved clinical symptoms. Postoperative management included prophylactic antibiotics, with no significant complications observed apart from a localized hematoma. Early diagnosis and appropriate management of obstructive hydrocephalus due to the aqueductal web are essential to prevent long-term neurological damage. While MRI remains the gold standard for detailed diagnosis, CT remains crucial with limited resources. VP shun remains a reliable intervention in such settings, with good clinical outcomes when managed appropriately.
