Abstract

Air pollution in urban areas triggered by vehicle emissions and industrial activities requires biological monitoring methods capable of demonstrating the cumulative impact of pollutants. Orthetrum sabina is a dragonfly species characterized by high mobility yet territorial behavior, making it highly effective as a bioindicator of air quality within specific areas. The biomonitoring focus on this species lies in its ability to absorb and store heavy metal residues and atmospheric particulates in its wing and thorax tissues during the adult phase. The complex nature of its cuticle allows for the clear recording of air pollutant deposits, providing data that is more representative than fluctuating physical air measurements. This species is known for its resilience, long-term exposure to high atmospheric pollutants can affect its wing morphology and flight patterns. O. sabina is not merely an inhabitant of the ecosystem but a reliable "natural sensor" for assessing air health quality. The utilization of this species as a biomonitoring model is expected to facilitate the mapping of air pollution zones in urban areas more efficiently and economically.

Abstract

Nepenthes ampullaria is a unique species of pitcher plant due to its detritivorous nature and tendency to grow in clusters on the forest floor. This study aims to examine the reproductive biology of N. ampullaria, including flower morphology, flowering phenology, and pollination systems. The research was conducted using descriptive observational methods in its natural habitat. The results showed that N. ampullaria is dioecious, where male and female flowers are found on different individuals. The flowering process begins with the emergence of inflorescence buds that develop into flower clusters. Pollinator activity, dominated by nocturnal and diurnal insects, plays a crucial role in the success of fertilization. In addition to sexual reproduction through seeds, this species also demonstrates strong vegetative reproduction capabilities through basal shoots. Understanding this reproductive biology is essential as a basis for ex-situ conservation efforts and the cultivation development of this carnivorous plant.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the reproductive mechanisms of teak (Tectona grandis) both generatively and vegetatively, and their relationship to global conservation status. The methods used were field observations and literature studies from various reliable scientific sources. The results of the study indicate that generative reproduction of teak occurs through the process of flowering, pollination by insects, and the formation of seeds that have natural dormancy. Meanwhile, vegetative reproduction is carried out through techniques such as cuttings and tissue culture, which are more efficient in cultivation because they produce uniform plants. Furthermore, based on global conservation data, teak is included in the endangered category. Thus, both reproductive methods play an important role in supporting the preservation and development of teak plants.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the utilization of Malvaceae growing in the yards of people in Telaga Segoar Hamlet, Loloan Village, Bayan District, North Lombok Regency. Based on observations, there are two species of Malvaceae, namely: Theobroma cacao and Ceiba pentandra. T. cacao seeds are sold as raw materials for the chocolate industry. C. pentandra fruit fiber is used to fill mattresses, pillows, and bolsters.

Abstract

Frangipani (Plumeria rubra) is a tropical ornamental plant that plays an important role in landscape aesthetics and ecological interactions in tropical environments. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the reproductive biology of Plumeria rubra, including its generative and vegetative mechanisms. The method used in this study is direct observation combined with descriptive analysis. The results indicate that generative reproduction involves complex pollination mechanisms influenced by floral morphology, pollinator interactions, and environmental factors. However, fruit and seed formation are relatively rare under natural conditions. In contrast, vegetative reproduction through stem cuttings is highly efficient and widely utilized due to its rapid growth and genetic stability. From a conservation perspective, this species is not classified as threatened due to its adaptability and widespread cultivation. These findings highlight the dominance of vegetative propagation in maintaining population sustainability of Plumeria rubra in both natural and artificial ecosystem.

Abstract

Water pollution is an environmental problem caused by anthropogenic activities such as domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste. One effective method for monitoring water quality is biomonitoring using bioindicator organisms. The snail (Achatina fulica) has the ability to absorb and accumulate pollutants, particularly heavy metals, through its body surface and digestive system. The accumulation of contaminants in snail tissues reflects the surrounding environmental conditions, making it a useful indirect indicator of water quality. In addition, changes in the behavior and physiological responses of the snail can indicate environmental stress caused by pollution. Therefore, Achatina fulica has the potential to serve as an economical and practical bioindicator in water pollution biomonitoring.
