Abstract

Abstract. Anggraini T, Syukri D, Manasikan TW, Nakano K. 2020. Anthocyanin profile of Syzygium oleana young leaves and fruits using triple quadrupole mass spectrometer: Identification of a new peonidin. Biodiversitas 21: 5893-5900. Anthocyanin is pigment present in many red, blue and purple colored plants that can be used as stable food-safe colorings and also offer health benefits as antioxidants. Syzygium oleana, with its dark purple fruit and red leaves, is one hitherto unexplored source of anthocyanin. This study is the first to establish the anthocyanin profile of S. oleana leaves and fruit exploiting the speed and accuracy of Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The anthocyanin compounds in the leaves and fruit of S. oleana were found to be derivatives of agliconpeonidin, cyanidin derivative, delphinidin. It was found that while both leaves and fruit of S. oleana contain the anthocyanin precursors cyanidin, delphinidin, petunidin, and peonidin. Fruit contains the anthocyanin malvidin and a large amount of petunidin not present in the leaves. In detail: anthocyanin found in S. oleana leaves were Cyanidin 3-galactoside, cyanidin with m/z 611, Delphinidin 3-O-?-D-glucopyranoside, and unknown peonidin. Anthocyanin in S. oleana fruits was cyanidin with m/z 449.1, delphinidin 3-O-?-D-glucopyranoside, petunidin with m/z 476, Malvidin 3-O-?-D-glucopyranoside, and an unknown peonidin. Fruit could be a better anthocyanin source and more effective as colorant than leaves, while leaves contain a stronger as yet unidentified antioxidant.

Abstract

Abstract. Anggraini T, Anwar A, Hervani D, Suhendra D, Wisnubroto MP, Noflindawati, Nst IM. 2025. Quality of sugar palm sap (Arenga pinnata) from various production centers in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 859-860. Arenga pinnata is a palm tree that produces palm sap, which contains high sugar content and offers a sweet taste and bioactive components that function as antioxidants. These A. pinnata trees grow in West Sumatra, where sugar palm fruit and palm sap sugar are the main horticultural products. In this study, we investigated the quality of palm sap (A. pinnata) from various sap-producing regions thrive in West Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on their color, total sugar contents, antioxidant activities, total phenolic contents, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) measurements. We compared palm sap sugar from the West Pasaman, Agam, Tanah Datar, Limapuluh Kota, South Solok, and Dharmasraya regions in West Sumatra. The color of palm sugar sap is vibrant yellow-red. The total sugar content ranges from 7-15.73%. The antioxidant activity of palm sap varies based on its concentration, with its total polyphenol content ranging from 46.32-499.32 mg GAE/g, highlighting the potential health benefits of palm sap. We also used the FTIR analysis to identify functional groups in the samples. This finding showed that the quality of palm sap found in West Sumatra varies in terms of quality. Based on its antioxidant content, MNJ A has the highest antioxidant activity, and TLM A has the highest total polyphenols. These results show that total polyphenols are not the only ones that contribute to the antioxidant activity of palm sap.

Abstract

Abstract. Novitasari R, Anggraini T, Hasbullah, Hervani D. 2025. Morphological, proximate, and bioactive compound characteristics of three local avocado (Persea americana) varieties from Solok District, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 5360-5370. This study compares the morphological characteristics, proximate composition, and bioactive compound content of three local avocado (Persea americana) varieties from Solok District, West Sumatra: Mega Merapi, Mega Paninggahan, and Mega Gagauan. The methods used include exploratory research for morphological observations with 30 samples per variety. In addition, chemical analysis was conducted using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with three replications. The variables observed were proximate, total sugar, tannin, and phenol. Data processing was carried out using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The results showed that Mega Gagauan had the most significant fruit weight (480.66 g) and fruit flesh (382.69%), as well as the highest water content (72.95%) and fat (4.79%) in the fruit seeds. The fruit flesh of this variety contains the highest carbohydrate (10.64%), fat (6.61%), and ash content (1.03%), with a low water content (81.02%). In comparison, Mega Paninggahan has a fruit height (12.44 cm) and seed weight (64.98 g) that are superior to the other two varieties, with carbohydrate content (27.84%), protein (1.91%) and ash content (1.28%) in the fruit seeds and protein (2.10%) in the fruit flesh that are higher than the other two varieties. Mega Merapi stands out with the highest water content (85.65%), polyphenol (102.64 mgGAE/g), and total sugar (20.60%) in the fruit flesh, while the fruit seeds contain tannin (0.61%) and polyphenol (943.45 mgGAE/g). Differences in peel color, texture, and flesh color were also found between varieties. These findings confirm significant variation in morphology, proximate composition, and bioactive compounds, which can inform the selection of superior varieties for consumption and inspire creative product development from avocado flesh and seeds.

Abstract

Abstract. Nguyen TV, Kasim M, Anggraini T, Doan LN, Duong NV. 2025. Resilience of wild and cultivated bitter melon (Momordica charantia) under deficit irrigation in Vietnam. Biodiversitas 26: 5248-5257. Water scarcity increasingly constrains vegetable production in tropical regions, requiring adaptive strategies such as deficit irrigation and the use of resilient genetic resources. This study evaluated the physiological and agronomic responses of two Momordica charantia accessions—designated as the wild type (TCCS VP-BT08/16) and the cultivated type (TCCS VP-BT01/14)—under three irrigation regimes (80 %, 65 %, and 50 % of field capacity, FC) in a split-plot field experiment conducted during the 2024–2025 dry season in Vietnam. Growth traits, SPAD chlorophyll values, and cumulative dry fruit yield were assessed using ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test (P < 0.05). Irrigation significantly influenced all measured traits (P ? 0.001). The cultivated type showed strong early vigor under full irrigation but declined rapidly after ~90 days under water stress, whereas the wild type maintained stable growth, branching, leaf production, and SPAD values across irrigation levels through 120 days. Dry fruit yield was sustained at 65% FC in both accessions (~185 g plant-¹ wild, ~178 g plant-1 cultivated) without significant reduction from full irrigation, while severe deficit (50% FC) caused moderate yield decline in the wild (~22%) and substantial losses in the cultivated type (~50%). These findings indicate that maintaining soil moisture at 65% FC can sustain bitter melon yield under dry-season conditions and highlight the superior drought resilience of the wild bitter melon as a valuable genetic resource for breeding climate-resilient cultivars.
