Abstract

Good oil palm cultivation contributes to the progress of the national economy by earning foreign exchange and income, creating jobs, and increasing welfare. However, independent palm oil farming has low productivity and quality due to limited knowledge and skills of GAP (Good Agriculture Practices). The research aims to formulate improvements in GAP skills, including technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills, using skills theory and the concept of sustainability. The research method was descriptive-quantitative with Multidimensional Scaling using the Rap-Palm Oil program on 100 respondents in Sambas Regency, one of the centers of independent oil palm smallholders in West Kalimantan. The results showed that conceptual skills through extension activities are prioritized in improving GAP skills. Therefore, counseling methods through demonstration plots, comparative studies, and field schools can be an effort to improve GAP skills for sustainable management of oil palm farming. Abstract

Land fires are an annual agenda in Indonesia, especially in areas covered by peatlands. Peatland management using fire is the main cause. The general paradigm for land fires is that the farmers' economy is low. In fact, the factors that cause land fires are not only from the economic aspect, but from the social and institutional aspects which affect the behavior of farmers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is (1) to analyze the correlation of factors that influence land burning behavior, and (2) to determine the model for the changing of burning behavior into non burning farm land cultivation, in order to prevent land fire in Kuburaya Disrict and Bengkayang District, West Kalimantan. The research involved farmers farming on peatlands in both districts. Regression models was used for the correlation analysis. Based on the results of the regression analysis, a land burning behavior change model was determined based on the influencing factors descriptively. The result of the analysis showed the factors that significantly influence land burning behavior at the household level are knowledge level (consist of farming problems faced by farmers, agricultural extension materials and the application of technology), observance of rules, activeness of mutual assistance, cosmopolitan level, appraisal on burning behavior, and imitation level. The resulting model for changing the behavior of burning land is implementing activity of assistance, social capital stimulus and positive agreements/ pressure to the land users.

Abstract

The smallholder palm oil plantations in the Mayasopa Subdistrict, Singkawang City, West Kalimantan, have an average productivity of around 1.25 tons per hectare per year. Despite this, the palm oil plantation areas in this subdistrict have seen significant growth, reaching 668 hectares, which accounts for approximately 50% of all palm oil plantations in East Singkawang District. Given this trend, it is imperative to enhance the economic well-being of palm oil farmers by introducing alternative technologies that would not only increase food security and farmer income but also contribute to environmental preservation through the adoption of intercropping patterns. This study is focused on analyzing the financial viability of various intercropping plants. The research methodology involved a descriptive survey among 34 farmers who have implemented different intercropping plants. The financial feasibility of each intercropping plant variant was evaluated using the B/C ratio and farming income as critical measures. The findings indicate that in sequence, chilies, taro, and corn meet the criteria for financial viability in intercropping implementation. Based on these results, it is recommended that palm oil farmers consider introducing intercropping on their plantations, with a particular emphasis on cultivating chilies, which has been identified as the most financially viable option, to enhance their economic prospects.

Abstract

Ginger is a medicinal plant with numerous uses across traditional industries, food sectors, and as an export commodity. Although ginger production in West Kalimantan reached 3,805.89 tons in 2022, this figure remains below the national average of 7,278.10 tons. Ginger farmers face various risks, including beetle pest attacks and rhizome rot diseases, leading to production fluctuations. This study aims to analyze the impact of farmers' behavior in facing production risks on the level of ginger production. The analysis was conducted using a production function regression with dummy variables representing farmers' behaviors, categorized into three groups: risk takers, risk neutral, and risk averters. The results indicate that farmers categorized as risk takers have 142.1% higher ginger production compared to risk averters, while risk-neutral farmers have 73.6% higher production. These findings demonstrate that farmers' behavior in managing production risks significantly influences ginger production levels.

Abstract

Independent oil palm farmers are crucial to the growth of the national economy. However, due to subpar institutional and farmer group performance, independent oil palm farmers' productivity still needs to improve. This research aimed to maximize institutional performance within the frameworks of social exchange theory and resource-based view theory. The study employed structural equation modeling, or SMART-PLS, and quantitative descriptive methodologies to examine 92 farmer group administrators in Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan. The study's findings illustrate that strategic orientation, culture, and commitment affect institutional/farmer group performance. In maximizing institutional performance, the following was done: 1) planning for environmental conservation by setting clear deadlines and assigning members to consider environmental sustainability and refrain from burning land; 2) communicating with the community and members to foster community harmony; 3) holding online group discussions for members who are unable to attend in order to save time discussing issues collectively; b. imposing strict sanctions for infractions by its members; 4) fostering active dialogues among members and working directly or virtually with instructors regarding oil palm cultivation knowledge. The most recent study aims to develop strategies for enhancing institutional and farmer group performance through strategic orientation, culture, and commitment.
