Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic strategies of digital persuasion in TikTok Affiliate content, addressing a gap in speech act research on creator-based advertising discourse. A corpus of 166 utterances from 15 videos by three Indonesian creators was analyzed using Searle's (1976) taxonomy and Aristotle's rhetorical framework. Findings reveal three key patterns: (1) assertive speech acts dominate (72.89%), particularly 'mentioning specifications' (38.55%), reflecting a 'trust-first' persuasion logic; (2) logos (60.24%), pathos (25.90%), and ethos (13.86%) operate complementarily within single utterances, not in separate segments; and (3) a consistent illocutionary-rhetorical matrix shows that 'claiming' is paradoxically grounded in ethos (50%) rather than logos, indicating that personal credibility substitutes objective data in this genre. This pragmatic-rhetorical integration, which is more concentrated than in conventional advertising, constitutes the genre's distinctive adaptive response to short-video constraints. Theoretically, the study extends speech act classification to the underexplored domain of affiliate marketing discourse. The findings offer a structured framework for analyzing persuasive language in digital media, with potential applications in educational contexts where critical digital literacy is emphasized.

Abstract

Culture as the basis of speech acts can encourage the speaker and the listener to realize their goals in communication activities. The reasons are that culture can make listeners want to hear more about the speaker's information, can be media for listeners to illustrate the implicature, and can make them respond quickly. However, no specific research describes the culture, implicature, and response in the illocutionary speech acts to realize the effectiveness of communication. Based on this problem, it is important to do further research. The first purpose is to describe the illocutionary speech acts in Ustaz Salim A. Fillah's lecture video, especially in the Culture edition. The second purpose is to describe how culture, as part of illocutionary speech acts to realize the effectiveness of communication. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis data technique refers to the four simultaneous processes by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which consist of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Speech acts are found to consist of assertive (identification, prediction, or description), directive (invocation, suggestion, or instruction), commissive (something is a must be conducted), expressive (expression of feeling), and declarative (acknowledgment of status or condition). All of those speech acts can make listeners want to hear more information, to be media to illustrate the implicature, and make them easier to remember the utterance of Ustaz Salim A. Fillah speech acts.

Abstract

The Lauje language, spoken by communities in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, reflects a rich cultural and social identity, yet faces the threat of extinction due to the dominance of Indonesian and the impact of globalization. This study aims to explore the forms, functions, and strategies of directive speech acts in the Lauje language, which remain largely undocumented in linguistic research. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to achieve this goal. Data was collected through field observation, audio recording of natural conversations, and interviews with native speakers in Moubang Village, a culturally representative Lauje-speaking area. Data collection techniques included eavesdropping, recording, and note-taking, while the analysis involved data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and validation using source and theoretical triangulation. The findings reveal six distinct forms of directive speech acts —commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, suggesting, and advising —each with specific social functions and realized through both direct and indirect strategies. These patterns reflect the speaker's sensitivity to social context, hierarchy, and politeness norms. The study concludes that directive speech acts in Lauje serve not only communicative purposes but also preserve the community's cultural values and relational dynamics. The research contributes to pragmatic studies of regional languages and supports efforts to document and revitalize endangered linguistic heritage in Indonesia.

Abstract

Teater Abdul Muluk (TAM) in Jambi remains under-researched in academic discourse despite its enduring practice and sustained preservation by local communities. Unlike Malay theatre in other regions, which has a well-established historiography and receives institutional support, TAM is often regarded as a marginal form within performing arts discourse. This research aims to re-examine this position by interpreting TAM as an active, reflective, and contextual cultural practice, a field for the production of meaning and cultural authority outside canonical centers. This study employs a critical ethnographic approach through performance documentation, in-depth interviews with multi-generational practitioners, and an analysis of performative elements, including staging structures, characterization, props, and music. The findings indicate that the continuity of TAM relies on performative negotiations that converge Malay customs, Islamic ethics, humor, and colonial memory, rather than the mere textual reproduction of the Syair Abdul Muluk. A key finding is the utilization of minimalist props, specifically the table and rattan, which serve as symbolic control centers to regulate authority, sound, the actors’ bodies, and the dramatic flow. These props establish a distinct performative character that defines Malay theater expression in Jambi. This article provides an empirical and methodological foundation for further research to uncover the dynamics of Malay theater practices in regions that have historically been underrepresented in the historiography of the performing arts.
