Abstract

One way to develop learning media is create a catalog based on the local potential of pineapple plantations in Blitar. The aim of this work is to find out the usability of the compiled catalog as a teaching tool for biodiversity material. This study uses the Research and Development (RnD) research method referred to Sugiyono (2017), starting with potential problem analysis, data collection, product design, design validation, and then design review. The tools used by the researchers consisted of validation surveys of media, materials and language experts. The data collected by the researchers were analyzed using quantitative descriptive data analysis techniques. Based on the results of validity tests by media experts, 93% feasibility was achieved with highly feasible criteria, 94% with material experts, and 89% with language experts. The conclusion is the catalog of pineapple pollinator diversity in Blitar feasibility was achieved as a teaching tool.

Abstract

The FIRE UP program was implemented as an initiative to enhance science literacy and to empower elementary school students. The program activities began with the administration of a pretest, followed by interactive outreach sessions, continued with simple training on the development of solar panel–based products, and concluded with the administration of a posttest. The pretest–posttest results indicated a significant increase in students’ knowledge, motivation, and skills in the field of science and technology, as evidenced by a rise in the average score of 21.43%. Overall, the FIRE UP program was found to be effective and feasible to be implemented periodically to improve science literacy among elementary school students.ABSTRAKProgram FIRE UP dilaksanakan sebagai salah satu upaya untuk meningkatkan literasi sains serta pemberdayaan siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

Elementary education plays a crucial role in developing 21st-century competencies and sustainability awareness from an early age. However, the implementation of project-based learning integrated with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) remains limited due to teachers’ insufficient understanding and skills in designing contextual learning materials. This community service program aimed to enhance elementary school teachers’ pedagogical competence in developing and implementing ESD-oriented Project-Based Learning (PjBL) modules. The program was conducted at SD Negeri Gembongan, Blitar Regency, involving 12 teachers through an integrated training and participatory mentoring approach. The activities included needs assessment, conceptual strengthening of ESD and PjBL, mentoring in project-based module development, and classroom implementation. Program evaluation employed a mixed-methods approach using pre-tests and post-tests, classroom observation, and teacher response questionnaires. The results indicated a significant improvement in teachers’ understanding of ESD, PjBL, and deep learning concepts. The quality of the developed learning modules improved across all aspects, particularly in the clarity of ESD-oriented learning objectives, coherence of project stages, and utilization of local environmental potential. Classroom implementation demonstrated a very high level of project-based learning execution with active student engagement. Overall, this program contributes to the promotion of more contextual, meaningful, and sustainability-oriented learning practices in elementary schools.

Abstract

Abstract

Ethnobotanical knowledge plays an important role in connecting biological concepts with local wisdom and contextual learning; however, its integration into formal biology education remains limited. This study aims to analyze the needs for ethnobotanical data among secondary school students and biology education students, as well as to examine its current application in biology learning materials. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Questionnaire data were collected from secondary school students and biology education students to identify priority ethnobotanical data categories, including local plant names, scientific names, plant parts used, traditional functions, cultural values, and conservation aspects. Interview data were used to explore perceptions of usefulness and preferred data presentation formats, while document analysis examined the extent of ethnobotanical integration in textbooks, learning modules, and curriculum documents. The results indicate that both groups expressed high to very high levels of need for ethnobotanical data, with biology education students consistently reporting higher needs, particularly for scientific and systematically organized information. Interview findings revealed that ethnobotanical data supported conceptual understanding, relevance to local contexts, teaching preparation, and research activities, with a strong preference for structured and visual presentation formats. Document analysis showed that existing biology learning materials provide limited, fragmented, and unsystematic ethnobotanical content with weak alignment to learning objectives. These findings highlight a significant gap between learners’ needs and available learning resources. The study implies the necessity of developing structured, contextual, and locally based ethnobotanical learning materials to enhance biology learning and support sustainable education.

Abstract

Traditional medicinal and personal care plant use remains an important component of community health practices in rural Indonesia, yet integrated quantitative ethnobotanical documentation is still limited. This study aimed to identify plant species used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes, document their parts and preparation methods, and analyze their cultural importance using quantitative ethnobotanical indices. A qualitative descriptive ethnobotanical design was applied through semi-structured interviews and participatory field observations involving 30 informants across 20 sites in Talun and Doko, Blitar. Data were analyzed using Use Value (UV) and Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) to evaluate species importance and agreement levels among informants. A total of 25 plant species from 19 families were recorded, with leaves as the most frequently utilized plant part and internal medicine as the dominant use category. The highest UV values were found in Peperomia pellucida (0.87) and Physalis angulata (0.80). The highest consensus occurred in eye care (ICF = 1.00), followed by internal medicine and skin treatment (ICF = 0.83). These results indicate strong cultural reliance and shared knowledge patterns in local plant use. The findings provide quantitative support for prioritizing culturally important species and offer applied potential for biodiversity conservation and contextual biology education.
