Abstract

This study aims to evaluate and describe changes in couples’ communication after undergoing premarital counseling. The primary focus is on prospective brides and grooms who are Civil Servants (ASN) in Surakarta. Premarital counseling serves as a means to prepare couples for harmonious relationships, with communication being a crucial element. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, where data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of eight ASN couples who had undergone premarital counseling. The research findings indicate an improvement in couples’ communication, particularly in the areas of openness, empathy, and conflict resolution. Premarital counseling plays a crucial role in helping couples realize the value of good communication in creating harmony in the household. However, challenges such as workloads and differing perspectives continue to impact communication interactions. These findings provide input for premarital counseling providers and the government to improve the quality of counseling services for prospective brides and grooms, particularly among ASN. Keywords: Communication Patterns, Premarital Counseling, Prospective Brides and Grooms, ASN in Surakarta City.

Abstract

Happiness is often defined as a condition that is highly dependent on material achievement and economic well-being. However, in communities with limited economic resources, happiness can have a different and deeper meaning. This study aims to understand the depiction of authentic happiness and the meaning of gratitude in the daily lives of pedicab drivers. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, through in-depth interviews with seven pedicab drivers working in and around Surakarta. The results show that the happiness experienced by pedicab drivers is not solely determined by material aspects, but rather by their ability to be grateful, maintain positive social relationships, have harmonious family ties, and interpret work as a form of responsibility and devotion. Despite facing economic constraints, the physical demands of work, and advancing age, informants still felt inner satisfaction when they were able to meet their family's basic needs, help others, and live simply. These findings suggest that gratitude plays a crucial role in shaping authentic happiness, particularly in the meaningful dimension of life. This research is expected to contribute to the development of positive psychology studies and become a basis for formulating policies that support the welfare of informal sector workers.

Abstract

Students from broken homes are likely to experience various psychological dynamics that influence their self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is a crucial aspect of mental health, adjustment, and academic and social functioning. This study aims to explore the self-acceptance process among students from broken homes at Sahid University, Surakarta, and to identify the influencing factors and their impact on their daily lives. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects were seven active students aged 18–23 from broken homes, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. Data validity was strengthened by triangulation of sources and methods, while data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that self-acceptance among students from broken homes is a gradual process that begins with self-awareness, followed by acceptance of the past, the development of a positive attitude toward oneself, and the ability to establish more adaptive social relationships. Internal factors such as self-understanding and emotional maturity, as well as external factors such as social support from peers and the campus environment, play an important role in shaping self-acceptance. Good self-acceptance positively impacts students' resilience, self-confidence, and academic and social adaptability.

Abstract

This study explores how prayer helps women in Solo Raya who experience stress after non-procedural abortions achieve psychological peace. This research used a qualitative phenomenological method with data collection through interviews and observations. Partner pressure and social stigma led to abortion, which led to guilt, somatic symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Initially, non-adaptive coping mechanisms, such as isolation, transformed into adaptive coping mechanisms, with prayer providing a sense of calm, forgiveness, and emotional strength rather than hobbies or social support. The sequence of ablutions made the informants feel cleaner and purer. Continuing with dhikr and prayer, inner peace enveloped them. The results of the prayers also made the informants feel more optimistic in living their lives and were able to avoid anxiety and stress.

Abstract

University students today face increasing academic demands, social pressures, and rapid sociocultural changes that may affect their mental well-being. From an Islamic psychological perspective, inner strength and balance are essential for maintaining psychological health. This study aims to examine the relationships between self-care behavior, self-compassion, resilience, and students’ mental well-being, with a particular focus on the mediating role of resilience. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 361 university students using a non-probability sampling technique, and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling, Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings indicate that resilience is strongly associated with students’ mental well-being, highlighting its central role as a key psychological resource. Self-care behavior is positively related to both resilience and mental well-being, with resilience acting as an important pathway linking self-care to improved well-being. However, self-compassion does not demonstrate a significant positive relationship with resilience or mental well-being, suggesting that its role may vary across cultural contexts, particularly in non-Western settings. These findings underscore the importance of promoting resilience and adaptive self-care as central components of student mental health interventions. From an Islamic psychological perspective, resilience reflects inner endurance, patience (sabr), and spiritual balance, offering a culturally grounded framework for understanding well-being. This study contributes to a more context-sensitive and integrative approach to student mental health by highlighting the dynamic interaction between behavioral and psychological resources.

Abstract

The increasing workload on teaching and administrative staff in Islamic boarding schools has become a crucial issue in human resource management (HR) practices. This study aims to analyze workload distribution, identify influencing factors, and evaluate its impact on overall staff performance. The study employed a qualitative approach through fieldwork, with the research location being an Islamic boarding school in Central Java, purposively selected based on its operational complexity and high academic and non-academic activities. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews with 15 participants (teachers, administrative staff, and management), participant observation, and analysis of the school's internal policy documents. The results revealed an inequitable distribution of workload across departments. Boarding school teachers, for example, juggles administrative duties and student guidance without adequate compensation or regulation. Nine of the 15 participants reported experiencing emotional exhaustion, loss of work motivation, and exhibiting clear symptoms of burnout. Five of them expressed a desire to transfer or resign. This situation was exacerbated by a lack of standardized tasks, the high demands of 24-hour work in the boarding school environment, and the pressures of an integrated curriculum. Burnout also impacts the quality of interactions between staff and decreases teacher engagement in learning activities. This study recommends the development of job analysis-based work guidelines, enhanced psychological support, time management training, and technology integration to optimize the workload management system sustainably.
