Abstract

Rarely was there a learning exercise that could reliably enhance critical thinking abilities in the classroom.  Consequently, a different approach was required to address the issue.  Contextual Case-Based Learning (CCBL) is an alternative learning activity that could be utilized as a tool to enhance the fundamental abilities required in this century.  It was proposed that 21st-century learning incorporate CCBL.   This study aimed to investigate the impact of the learning model in helping students develop their critical thinking skills.  This study employed a posttest-only design with non-equivalent groups, utilizing a quasi-experimental approach. The total sample class is 44 pre-service biology teachers. There were 22 students in the traditional class and 22 students in the Contextual Case-Based Learning (CCBL) session.  Students in the CCBL class had an average critical thinking score of 53.64, with a standard deviation of 19,160.  However, in the conventional classroom, pupils' critical thinking scores averaged 36.82 with a standard deviation of 18,358.  The standard deviation was 20,402, and the average for both groups was 45.23. Moreover, the learning approach factor has a p-value of less than 0.05, as determined by a two-way ANOVA.  It suggests that learning strategies have a significant impact on students' ability to think critically.  The p-value for the factor of students' prior critical thinking skill levels is less than 0.05.  This suggests that students' earlier critical thinking abilities have a statistically significant impact of 5% on their subsequent critical thinking abilities.  A p-value greater than 0.05 was found for the interaction between the model learning elements and the students' pre-existing critical thinking skills.  Therefore, it follows that the two elements taken together do not affect pupils' capacity for critical thinking. Students' critical thinking skills ranged from poor to moderate, and their responses to the test's questions were generally below average.      Keywords: contextual case-based learning; critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Indonesia, located at the confluence of three major tectonic plates, this situation allows Indonesia to always be under threat of geological disasters. Ternate Island with Mount Gamalama, located in the western part of Halmahera Island, is also a threat of geological disasters. SMP Negeri 13 Kota Ternate, located in a high-risk area of earthquake and volcanic eruption, became the location of the Disaster Preparedness School (SSB) implementation. This activity aims to implement the concept of Disaster Preparedness School to reduce disaster risks and impacts through a comprehensive approach. The research method used a participatory approach with activities including disaster socialization, rescue simulations, science projects to make simple earthquake detection devices, installation of disaster signs, and lectures from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). SSB implementation was carried out through three stages: organizing, interpreting, and applying. The results of the activities show a high level of school resilience with six supporting aspects, but there are still obstacles such as student turnover and limited funds. SSB activities contribute significantly in increasing the awareness and preparedness of school community in facing disasters. It can be concluded that the implementation of SSB in SMP Negeri 13 Ternate City successfully integrated disaster mitigation in the curriculum and school activities. The main recommendation is to increase socialization, implement routine simulations, and develop the resilience aspects of the school in a comprehensive manner.

Abstract

Educational leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping school quality, especially in contexts with limited resources. In Indonesia, despite ongoing reforms, many public schools still struggle with gaps in teacher performance due to weak coordination, insufficient recognition, and minimal external support. This study aims to explore the relationship between instructional leadership by the principal and teacher performance at State Elementary School 33 in Ternate City. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis to capture contextual realities and leadership dynamics. The findings reveal that effective instructional leadership—defined by classroom supervision, recognition of teacher efforts, collaborative decision-making, and strategic resource management—positively influences teacher motivation, administrative compliance, and instructional quality. Teachers responded positively to the principal’s hands-on leadership and participatory approach, while supervision cycles and administrative support enhanced accountability. The study concludes that even in funding-constrained environments, instructional leadership remains a key driver of school improvement. Its strength lies in fostering a collaborative school culture, aligning teacher practices with national standards, and supporting continuous professional growth. The results offer valuable insights for school leaders, policymakers, and educational researchers seeking practical leadership strategies to enhance teaching quality in similar socio-educational contexts. Future studies are encouraged to adopt a longitudinal design and expand the sample to include comparative analyses across diverse regions and school types.
