Abstract

Learning in medical faculties that use the method of problem-based learning (PBL) requires students to be able to study independently (SDL). Even though they have previously been exposed to SDL, students still do not have the readiness to study independently so that they cannot implement SDL well. Emotional quotient is the ability to manage the emotions of self and others. Students who have emotionally quotient will have good self-control so that there is greater potential for implementing independent learning. Emotional quotient is closely related to the readiness of individual independent learning. The higher the emotional quotient and self-directed learning readiness, the easier it is for individuals to be able to apply independent learning (SDL). This study aims to determine the relationship of emotional quotient with self-directed learning readiness of students in Medical Faculty of Lampung University. Data retrieval in this study using questionnaires tool that has been tested for validity and reliability. The sample uses a stratified random sampling technique from FK Unila medical students class of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 as many as 255 samples. Univariate analysis showed most respondents have a high emotional quotient 83,9%, a moderate emotional quotient 16,1% and no respondents have a low emotional quotient. Respondents with a high self-directed learning readiness were 78,4 %, a moderate self-directed learning readiness 21,6% and no respondents have a low self-directed learning readiness. Bivariate analysis with chi-square test obtained p-value <0.05 and there is a significant relationship between emotional quotient and self-directed learning readiness of students in Medical Faculty of Lampung University.

Abstract

The incidence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the world and in Indonesia continues to increase. One factor that can affect high blood glucose levels and end up being DM is psychological stress. Patients with central obesity are more vulnerable and have a higher risk of experiencing stress caused by various psychological and emotional factors. The occurrence of stress will cause the activation of the Corticotropic-Releasing Hormone (CRH)-Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)-cortisol hormone system which has a direct effect on increasing glucose levels in the blood (hyperglycemia) and if the condition continues, it will increase the risk of DM disease. Observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. The study sample consisted of 82 patients with central obesity in the University of Lampung environment, with a consecutive sampling method. This research was conducted by filling in and direct interviewing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-10 questionnaire and measuring fasting blood glucose levels in all the academic communities on men with central obesity at the University of Lampung. The results of the univariate analysis of the research sample were dominated by the age group of 18-25 years; the stress level was in the moderate category; with uncontrolled fasting blood glucose levels. The results of bivariate analysis with Chi-Square test showed p-value = 0.001 (p-value <0.05). There is a relationship between stress level and fasting blood glucose in men with central obesity at the University of Lampung.

Abstract

Excessive consumption of monosodium glutamate (MSG) has a neurotoxic effect on the cerebellum, which will lead to a state of oxidative stress characterized by decreased activity of catalase. This study aims to determine the effect of Lampung Robusta Coffee extract (Coffea canephora) againsts to activity of the cerebellar catalase enzyme in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) strain sprague-dawley induced by monosodium glutamate. This research is a type of experimental study with a Posttest Only Control Group Design approach. The subjects were 25 rats which were divided into 5 groups which are K- (aquadest 3,5 ml/day), K+ (MSG 4 g/kgBW/day), P1, P2, P3 (MSG 4 g/kgBW/day and Lampung Robusta Coffee extract 1,5 ml/200gBW/day with a concentration of 0,03 g/ml; 0,06 g/ml; 0,12 g/ml respectively) for 14 consecutive days. The activity of the cerebellar catalase enzyme is calculated with spectrophotometer 210 nm. The average specific activity of the cerebellum catalase enzyme in K +, K-, P1, P2 and P3 were 0.00104 U/mg, 0.00154 U/mg, 0.00139 U/mg, 0.00161 U/mg, and 0.00190 U/mg respectively. One-Way ANOVA test obtained p value = 0.001 (p <0.05). Post Hoc LSD test showed a significant difference (p <0.05) between the K + and K- (p = 0.007), K+ and P2(p = 0.003), K + and P3 (p = 0.000), and P1 and P3 (p = 0.007), which means that there is an effect of Lampung Robusta Coffee extract (Coffea canephora) againsts to activity of the enzyme catalase of cerebellar in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) strain Sprague-dawley induced by MSG.
