Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation challenges Indonesian EFL learners face with English consonant fricatives. The research aimed to identify common pronunciation errors, explore underlying causes, and propose strategies for improvement. Using an explanatory sequential design, 30 undergraduate students completed a pronunciation test focusing on fricatives, followed by interviews with 10 students who made the most errors. The analysis revealed frequent mispronunciations of fricatives such as /ʒ/, /v/, and /θ/, often substituted with native sounds like /s/, /z/, and /t/. Voiced fricatives posed greater difficulties than voiceless ones, especially in contexts where Indonesian has no phonetic equivalent. Interviews highlighted a lack of familiarity with these sounds and insufficient pronunciation training as primary challenges. Native language interference and limited exposure to correct English pronunciation were significant factors in these difficulties. The findings call for more targeted instruction in English fricatives within the Indonesian EFL context. Further research with larger sample sizes and longitudinal approaches is recommended to explore long-term outcomes.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources in rural areas is a significant challenge in achieving equal education in Indonesia, particularly in areas such as Tumbang Nusa Village, Jabiren Raya District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. Low awareness of the importance of education and limited access to English language learning are factors that hinder the development of the younger generation's potential. This community service activity aims to increase the awareness and basic English language skills through a participatory and contextual approach based on the school community. The implementation method includes interactive training, song-based and visual learning, and joint reflection, face-to-face at partner schools. The results of the activity demonstrated high enthusiasm among participants, active engagement in the learning process, and increased motivation to learn English. This activity also strengthened collaboration between the community service team, the village, and the school as local partners. This activity suggests that the contextual and communicative approach is effective in developing learning awareness and language skills among students living in rural areas.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges, attitudes, and strategies of Indonesian EFL learners in academic writing, focusing on EFL learners from Central Kalimantan, a context that has received limited scholarly attention. Employing a mixed-method design, data were collected from 163 undergraduate students through questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed that learners experienced difficulties in academic writing, with sentence structure (76%), topic familiarization (75%), and grammar (62%), emerging as the most challenging aspects. The degree of difficulty significantly varied across gender and academic year, with female and sophomore students reporting greater challenges. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated generally positive attitudes toward academic writing, considering it essential for their academic and professional development. The participants reported various strategies to overcome difficulties, such as initiating self- and peer-review, and implementing extensive use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like Grammarly, QuillBot, and ChatGPT. While these digital tools were perceived as beneficial in enhancing accuracy and organization, the participants also expressed caution regarding overreliance. The results emphasize the importance of developing context-specific strategies to strengthen writing practice and grammar instruction. The study contributes a contextualized understanding of EFL learners’ academic writing experiences and emphasizes the balance between human effort and technological support.

Abstract

This study explores the structure and function of noun phrases (NPs) in English essays written by undergraduate EFL students at Universitas Palangka Raya. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, it analyzed 78 essays to identify and classify types and frequencies of noun phrase modifiers based on Biber et al.’s (2021) syntactic framework. The findings revealed that students predominantly used premodified noun phrases (85%), with determiners and adjectives as the most frequent modifiers, while postmodified noun phrases (15%) were less common and mostly realized through prepositional phrases. More complex postmodifiers, such as adjectives, participle clauses, infinitive clauses, adverbs, and appositives appeared infrequently, indicating limited syntactic variety. The dominance of simpler noun phrase structures suggests that students demonstrate intermediate syntactic competence, emphasizing clarity and economy in expression. These tendencies are attributed to pedagogical focus on basic grammar and first-language influence, particularly from Bahasa Indonesia. The study recommends enhancing grammar instruction by integrating activities that promote the use of complex noun phrase constructions in academic writing.
