Abstract

The growing influence of social media on language acquisition has opened new avenues for enhancing student engagement in foreign language learning. However, its impact on verbal participation remains underexplored. This study investigates the role of TikTok as an instructional tool in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) speaking classes, focusing on its effectiveness in fostering student engagement. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study integrates quantitative pre-test and post-test assessments to measure engagement levels and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to capture students’ perceptions. The findings indicate a significant increase in engagement: statistical analyses reveal notable improvements in students’ participation, while qualitative insights highlight TikTok’s capacity to enhance motivation, peer interaction, and authentic language practice. These results suggest that TikTok is a dynamic platform for improving speaking skills and engagement, offering valuable implications for educators seeking innovative teaching strategies in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the internalization of religious moderation values among students at Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKI) and Public Higher Education Institutions (PTU) in South and West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Amid concerns over rising religious intolerance and extremism, higher education is increasingly seen as a strategic arena for fostering inclusive values. PTKI, by design, promotes moderate Islamic teachings, but comparative evidence between PTKI and PTU remains underexplored. Adopting a quantitative comparative approach, the study surveyed 400 students to measure their perceptions across four dimensions: national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and accommodation of local culture. Results show that PTKI students consistently score higher than their PTU counterparts across all dimensions. For example, PTKI students recorded a higher mean score in anti-violence (2.88) compared to PTU (2.53), and similar gaps are found in other areas. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of PTKI in shaping moderate and pluralistic religious identities through structured curricula and institutional culture. The study contributes to educational and socio-religious discourse by highlighting how religious education, when aligned with national values, can counter radicalism and promote social harmony. This study offers a novel comparative framework that integrates sociological da’wah and self-perception theory to empirically assess how institutional environments shape students’ internalization of religious moderation in higher education.

Abstract

This study examined the role and strategies of ulama in political communication during the regional elections (Pilkada) in Mandailing Natal Regency, Indonesia—a region where religious authority plays a central role in shaping political behavior. This research adopted a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing in-depth interviews, which were selected purposefully for their active involvement in the local political landscape. Apart from that, observation and documentation were also used as data sources. Data were analyzed thematically using NVivo 12 Plus software. The findings revealed that ulama, as trusted religious figures, conveyed political messages through traditional religious forums such as majelis taklim and Friday sermons, as well as through digital platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. These messages, rooted in Islamic values, emphasized leadership integrity, justice, and civic responsibility. The ulama’s communication strategy, which blended religious authority with cultural symbolism, significantly influences voter perceptions and participation. This study also highlighted the risk of social polarization when the ulama acts as partisan figures. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on religion and politics by offering insights into the symbolic and practical dimensions of faith-based political communication in Muslim-majority contexts. It also underscores the importance of ethical boundaries to ensure that religious leadership strengthens democratic engagement rather than undermining social cohesion.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, especially in border areas like Sambas Regency, where intervention efforts have seen limited success. This study investigates the biopolitical dimensions of stunting by highlighting the disconnect between national policies and local realities, particularly in community participation and behavioral change. Using a qualitative case study in Lela Village, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Results indicate that low paternal involvement, reliance on traditional medicine, poor health literacy, and smoking habits hinder prevention efforts. State narratives also tend to overburden mothers while neglecting shared responsibility. Biopolitical and gender based approaches to stunting remain underexplored in Indonesia. Stunting is understood here as a complex interaction of power and knowledge that influences public perspectives and government policy. The study calls for a shift from top-down technical fixes to inclusive strategies that promote gender equity, empower communities, and adapt to socio-cultural contexts. It contributes to the discourse on public health governance by advocating participatory, context-sensitive, and transformative solutions for sustainable stunting reduction.

Abstract

The integration of technology in education presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in the context of Islamic education, where maintaining pedagogical effectiveness while embracing digital tools remains a key concern. This study aims to analyze technology integration in Islamic education, explore educators’ strategies to enhance student engagement and understanding, and identify challenges and opportunities related to technology use, including artificial intelligence and social media, to optimize digital-based learning. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional survey design, the study collected data from 11,372 Islamic education teachers across Indonesia, following a pilot phase involving 569 teachers. The findings indicate a generally positive reception of technology integration, with a high overall average response (4.4035), demonstrating its perceived effectiveness in supporting student engagement and comprehension. Key recommendations include enhancing teacher training programs, improving technological infrastructure, and adopting a balanced pedagogical approach to optimize educational outcomes.

Abstract

Students with special needs in inclusive education settings, including Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), often face significant challenges related to low self-efficacy and limited independence. These difficulties are frequently rooted in feelings of alienation, low self-confidence, social withdrawal, and experiences of bullying. Peer support plays a vital role in fostering both self-efficacy and independence among these students. This study investigates how peer support contributes to the development of these attributes in inclusive Islamic boarding schools. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed thematically using Quirkos software. The findings indicate that emotional, instrumental, and informational support from peers—especially when accompanied by unconditional positive regard and emotional availability—significantly enhances students’ self-efficacy and independence. The integration of Islamic values and the cultural context of pesantren nurtures a peer environment rooted in the philosophy of “humanizing humans”, which promotes inclusivity and challenges hierarchical perceptions of disability. This study provides valuable insights for inclusive education practitioners aiming to foster supportive peer relationships and inclusive school cultures.

Abstract

This study explores the role of law enforcement agencies in resolving customary law disputes in Bener Meriah and Nagan Raya Regencies, focusing on the integration of customary law with national law. The study addresses the challenges faced and the collaborations between law enforcement and customary leaders in settling disputes, particularly conflicts between customary and formal legal principles. Using a qualitative approach and case study methodology, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including police representatives, the Aceh Customary Council, and prosecutors, along with direct observations and a literature review. The findings indicate that while customary law is officially recognized within Aceh’s legal framework, significant challenges arise in harmonizing it with national law, especially in cases where their principles diverge. Law enforcement agencies, including the police and prosecutors, play a pivotal role in bridging these gaps by working with customary leaders to mediate disputes. These partnerships uphold local wisdom while ensuring compliance with formal legal standards. Case studies from both regencies demonstrate that dispute resolutions often seek a balance between maintaining customary values and adhering to national law. This study contributes to understanding how law enforcement can facilitate effective conflict resolution within a pluralistic legal system.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of entrepreneurial values within the educational practices of traditional pesantren in Aceh, Indonesia. While entrepreneurship is not formally taught, pesantren foster entrepreneurial competencies through religious devotion, moral education, and communal life. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that pesantren cultivate dual dimensions of edupreneurship: batiniyah values such as sincerity, perseverance, and reliance on God, and lahiriyah practices, including community leadership, social responsibility, and trust-building. These values emerge organically from daily religious practices and form a moral foundation for entrepreneurial engagement. Despite challenges such as the absence of formal entrepreneurial curricula and limited critical thinking development, pesantren demonstrates a sustainable model of faith-based entrepreneurship that balances religious commitment with economic agency. This study contributes to global discussions on Islamic education and value-based entrepreneurship, offering a context-specific paradigm for integrating ethical economic empowerment into religious education systems. The Acehnese pesantren experience provides a valuable alternative to secular models, emphasizing indigenous educational traditions’ potential to drive spiritual and socioeconomic transformation.

Abstract

This study explored the role of education supervisors in enhancing the professional competence of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in madrasahs across six provinces in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research responds to concerns over the uneven quality of PAI instruction, which is often hindered by weak supervision, limited training, and inadequate use of digital tools. Employing a qualitative approach, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to identify key supervisory functions and challenges. The findings revealed that education supervisors significantly contributed to improving teacher quality through classroom observations, performance evaluations, personalized mentoring, and facilitation of professional training—particularly in the integration of ICT. However, supervision was often constrained by internal factors such as teacher motivation and seniority, as well as external barriers like limited infrastructure and resistance to innovation. To address these challenges, the study presented an ICT-based supervisory model that emphasizes collaboration, reflective practice, and strategic support. This research contributes to the literature by offering a contextualized framework for supervision in Islamic education and proposing scalable strategies for professional development. It also provides global relevance for Islamic educational institutions facing similar structural and pedagogical constraints.
