Abstract

During the past decades, Qiroatul Kutub has been adopted as the learning model, therefore, this study is aimed to explore the development of the Qiroatul Kutub model using the Plickers application and the feasibility of it. Driven by Borg and Galls model of research and development (RnD), the researchers collected the data through documentation of 35 University students including expert assessments of learning method, materials and media. The expert validity test is based on 3 aspects of the module, learning model, and learning media using five scale analysis techniques, namely very good to very poor. From the expert validity test, an average score of 3.7 (A) was obtained, which was very good in terms of modules, learning models, and learning media, while the limited test to 32 student respondents obtained 3.8 (A) or very well from 3 aspects. Then after the revision, field testing was carried out and got an average score of 4 (A) or very good with an increase in student achievement from the pre-test and post-test results of 19.15%, indicating that the development of this learning model is very feasible to use. Drawing on the findings, this study provided an insightful finding on the adoption of Plickers application in Arabic reading skills. Thus, the teacher could incorporate this application to gain better students reading skills.

Abstract

Moral value is vital and beneficial in students' lives. This value is utilized as a guide in behavior when interacting in Arabic learning activities. This value craves to be internalized in these activities through the teacher's acts with the aim that learning can run interactively and create character students. This study aims to analyze the internalization of character values through teacher directive acts in learning Arabic at Darus Salam High School and Al Munawaroh High School Jombang. This research adopted a qualitative approach by employing the case study. The research data was obtained from interviewing and documentation of three teachers’ directive speech acts from two senior high schools about the context of these teachers’ acts. This study draws on the internalization of character values through teacher directive acts in learning Arabic at Darus Salam and Al Munawaroh High School Jombang with four functions, they are; a) the function of asking, b) the function of ordering, c) the function of inviting, and d) the function of forbidding by internalizing character values, namely the value of curiosity, independent value, religious value, and responsibility value. The results of this study contribute to the teacher's media in using appropriate speech acts as an effort to create students who have character and become more interactive and communicative learning because of the understanding between teachers and students. The implications for future research need to discuss the following research to understand character values through Arabic teaching materials.

Abstract

A language reflects the culture of the speakers. The use of language on social media platforms without an editor creates several issues, one of which is that it can spiral out of control. The goal of this research is to categorize and analyze expressive speech acts of praise and criticism in BBC Arabic Instagram comments. This is a descriptive-qualitative study with data sources in the form of netizen comments on BBC Arabic between January and February. There are two hundred data in total and they were obtained using a purposive sample technique. According to the findings of this research, many users of social media express criticism more often than they express praise or appreciation, with a ratio of 87:13. Being outspoken in their criticism will become the character and culture of social media users over time. This is clearly not in line with Arab culture, where Islam is the dominant religion. As a result, that was expected that research based on this model will be able to influence how language is used on social media.

Abstract

This current study has increased the amount of studies on metadiscourse features in English and Arabic, as well as cultural groupings, by examining the usage of hedging in linguistic research articles published in English and Arabic. The technique was qualitative, with a corpus of 40 articles from six linguistics journals used. This study aimed to identify similarities and differences in the use of hedges in native English and native Arabic linguistics research publications. Hyland's taxonomy of metadiscourse markers was used to analyze the language categories. The contrastive analysis of English and Arabic in this article was a systematic investigation of language pairs to uncover differences and similarities. Arabic articles are not more dominant than English articles in the Hidges structure. The result showed that hedges in English is greater than in Arabic research articles. From those findings, it might have a substantial influence on the teaching and learning of Arabic as a foreign language in English context.

Abstract

In the 21st century, skills required higher order thinking skills (HOTS). Therefore the test questions developed are directed towards HOTS based. The purpose of this study was to find a HOTS-based Arabic question model in the national level Arabic questions that could be used as a reference for teachers in developing good and appropriate HOTS-based questions and inspirational. The research approach used in this study is a qualitative and quantitative type of research (R&D) research approach. Researchers reveal models of HOTS-based Arabic questions that are in accordance with scientific and modern developments with discussions with Arabic assessment experts, visiting several schools that teach Arabic as a preferred foreign language, discussions with Arabic teachers, interviewing question development officials, and checking national Arabic questions, then discussions with Arabic experts and teachers.  The Arabic HOTS question is still understood differently by Arabic teachers and there are still many Arabic questions that have not been categorized as HOTS. Therefore, Arabic teachers need to be given training in developing Arabic HOTS questions but who focus on Arabic questions. So far, the question training is still combined with other materials with speakers who are not experts in developing Arabic questions.
