Abstract

Comprehending reading text in many genres is one of the main goals in learning English at the Junior High School level. Many innovative methods have been adapted and implemented by numerous scholars to improve this receptive skill. Thus, this study exposes the effectiveness of the Global Method to improve reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sigi and focuses on Narrative text. A quasi-experimental design was utilized involving two classes: an experimental class taught using the Global Method and a control class taught using conventional methods. A total of 46 students participated in this study. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests to measure their reading comprehension before and after the treatment. Paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests are applied to determine the significance differences between the two groups. The results present that the experimental class achieves a significant improvement in reading comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 66.91 in the pre-test to 87.91 in the post-test. In contrast, the control class points out a smaller improvement, with mean scores rising from 61.70 to 73.35. Statistical analysis confirmed that the Global Method has a significant positive effect on students’ reading comprehension (the p-value 0.001 lower than 0,05). Therefore, the Global Method is more effective than conventional teaching methods in enhancing students’ ability to understand narrative texts. It is recommended that English teachers incorporate this method into their instructional reading practices to support students’ comprehension development.

Abstract

Reading skills are very important for students such as students can get information from reading, students can improve their knowledge, students can expand their way of thinking by reading any text. Thus, this research aims to determine whether using the effectiveness of the Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, and Test (PQRST) method in enhancing reading comprehension skills of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Torue. The researcher used purposive sampling approaches to get the sample. Using a quasi-experimental design with 72 participants divided equally into experimental and control group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test on recount texts. The pre-test measured students' prior knowledge, where as the post-test measured students' improvement in reading comprehension using the PQRST method following the treatment.  The results show that the experimental group improves significantly in reading comprehension, with the mean score rising from 59.64 in the pre-test to 87.28 in the post-test. In comparison, the control group showed a modest increase, with mean scores increasing from 65.19 to 75.83. Statistical analyses confirmed the PQRST method that the improvement in the experimental group was statistically significant (p 0.05). The findings show that using the PQRST method successfully improves students' conceptual comprehension and promotes more fair learning outcomes. As a result, it is recommended that the PQRST method be used more widely to teach reading comprehension in senior high schools.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency is essential for academic and social development of EFL students. However, numerous students often struggle with limited vocabulary, grammatical deficiencies, and a lack of confidence which contribute to their speaking performance. Therefore, this study exposes the effectiveness of Information Gap Activities (IGA) to elevate students’ speaking skills – specifically in fluency and comprehensibility – of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Sigi. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: an experimental class received IGA treatment and a control class taught by using conventional methods, with a total of 60 student participants. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests to measure their speaking ability before and after the treatment. Pre-test and post-test data were analyzed using SPSS. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group, with the mean score increasing from 41.67 to 67.50, compared to the control group’s increase from 41.67 to 50.56. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test (p = 0.000) and Mann-Whitney U Test (p = 0.000) confirmed this difference to be statistically significant. These findings suggest that Information Gap Activities can effectively enhance students’ speaking abilities, offering a communicative and interactive alternative to traditional instructional approaches.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of YouTube animated videos on students’ motivation and vocabulary development in learning English at SDN 26 Palu. In recent years, technology integration in language education has become crucial for enhancing young learners’ engagement and comprehension. However, few studies have examined the specific effects of YouTube animated videos within Indonesian public elementary school contexts. This study employed a mixed-methods design combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design measured vocabulary improvement, while interviews and classroom observations explored students’ motivation. The participants consisted of 15 sixth-grade students who took part in six meetings over two weeks. The findings revealed that the use of YouTube animated videos significantly enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery and motivation in learning English. Quantitative data showed a mean increase of 10.2 points from pre-test to post-test, while qualitative data indicated that students found the videos engaging and enjoyable. It is concluded that YouTube animated videos are effective and accessible media for improving English vocabulary and sustaining motivation among elementary learners.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent of EFL students’ understanding of the suffix -en in English word formation at Tadulako University. This research employs a descriptive quantitative design, with data collected through a multiple-choice test and a questionnaire focusing on recognition, word formation, and meaning of the suffix -en. The data are analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that students experience low difficulty in recognizing the suffix -en, moderate difficulty in understanding its meaning, and high difficulty in word formation using the suffix -en. These results suggest that students’ difficulties lie mainly in productive and semantic aspects rather than in formal recognition, indicating the need for explicit instruction focusing on word formation practice and contextualized meaning analysis.

Abstract

Many seventh-grade students struggle with speaking skills due to limited linguistic knowledge and speaking anxiety, despite the expectations of the Merdeka Curriculum for junior high school learners to communicate effectively in English. To address these challenges, group work is often recommended as a strategy to reduce anxiety and increase student participation. However, most previous studies were conducted at higher education levels, leaving limited evidence for younger learners. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether group work significantly improves the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 18 Palu. A quasi-experimental design was used, involving two intact classes of 28 students each. Both groups completed a pre-test and post-test consisting of three oral questions assessing fluency and comprehensibility. The treatment will be administered over six sessions, from the second to the seventh meeting. The experimental group will use the group work technique, while the control group will receive conventional instruction. The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U Test because the scores were not normally distributed. The findings showed that although both groups demonstrated increased mean scores from pre-test to post-test, the significance value (p = 0.113) exceeded the 0.05 threshold. Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, indicating that group work did not produce a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking skills. These results suggest that group work may require longer implementation or additional support to yield stronger effects for junior high school learners.

Abstract

Willingness to communicate (WTC) has emerged as a critical psychological construct mediating between linguistic competence and actual language use, yet its influence on speaking performance remains underexplored in Indonesian EFL contexts through learners' lived experiences. This qualitative study employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to investigate how English Education students at Universitas Tadulako experience and interpret the ways WTC shapes their English-speaking performance. Three undergraduate students (semesters 3-5) participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews, with findings triangulated through a lecturer interview. Systematic IPA analysis revealed four superordinate themes: (1) WTC as Dynamic Social-Cognitive State, fluctuating with context rather than functioning as a stable trait; (2) The Fluency-Accuracy Paradox, whereby students universally prioritize comprehensibility over grammatical correctness as a strategic coping mechanism; (3) Fear as Cultural-Pedagogical Construct, wherein judgment anxiety rooted in Indonesian educational culture inhibits WTC despite supportive teaching; and (4) The Preparation Imperative, in which advance notice and cognitive readiness universally facilitate WTC while spontaneous demands trigger defensiveness. Findings demonstrate that WTC operates as a multi-dimensional construct shaped by individual motivation, social ecology, cultural context, and pedagogical environment. Practical implications include creating psychologically safe environments, validating fluency-first strategies, and scaffolding spontaneity through preparation.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of pair-work activities in developing students’ speaking confidence at SMAN 5 Palu. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, four Grade 11 students were purposively selected based on varying levels of speaking confidence. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that pair-work activities create a supportive, low-anxiety environment that encourages students to speak more freely. Students reported feeling more comfortable, less nervous, and more motivated when interacting with a peer instead of speaking individually or in front of the whole class. Despite challenges such as limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and fear of making mistakes, pair-work activities helped reduce anxiety and increased communication effort. The study concludes that pair-work is an effective strategy for improving speaking confidence and suggests that teachers integrate more structured and supportive pair-speaking tasks in classroom practice.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of using CNN news videos to support speaking development in a Listening for Information and Leisure course. Many EFL students experience difficulty improving speaking skills due to limited authentic exposure and listening instruction that emphasizes comprehension rather than production. This research employed a convergent parallel mixed-method design involving 25 second-semester English Education students. Data were collected through a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative findings showed mean scores ranging from M = 3.52 to M = 4.20, with 82% of responses categorized as positive (agree and strongly agree), indicating generally favorable perceptions. Students reported improvements in vocabulary, pronunciation, motivation, and speaking confidence. Interview results supported these findings, although challenges such as fast speech rate and unfamiliar vocabulary were identified. Overall, CNN news videos are perceived as effective authentic materials for supporting speaking development in EFL higher education contexts when accompanied by appropriate instructional guidance.
