Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Task-based Learning (TBL) strategy can improve the speaking skills of 11th-grade students at MAN 2 Palu City. Using quantitative methods with a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 428 students as the population. The sample was selected purposively, with XI MIPA 1 serving as the experimental group and XI MIPA 3 as the control group. The research instrument consisted of pre-tests and post-tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' speaking skills after implementing TBL, as the t-value (4.092) exceeded the t-critical value (1.996) at a significance level of 0.05 with df=67. The hypothesis was accepted, confirming that TBL is effective in enhancing students' speaking abilities. Thus, this strategy can be applied as a teaching approach to foster speaking skill development.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique in developing English speaking skills among Grade IX students at SMPN 3 Banawa, Indonesia. Through a quasi-experimental design, 49 students were divided into experimental and control groups, focusing on expressions of hope, wishes, and congratulations. The experimental group received SGD treatment over four meetings, while the control group followed conventional teaching methods. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvement in the experimental group’s speaking skills, with mean scores increasing from 38.94 to 71.15. The t-test results (t-counted=3.70462, t-table=2.01174, p<0.05) demonstrated SGD’s effectiveness in enhancing students’ speaking fluency and appropriacy. The findings suggest that SGD creates a supportive learning environment that boosts student confidence and participation in English speaking activities, offering valuable insights for language teaching methodology.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using a visual dictionary to enhance vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Palu. A pre-experimental research design was employed, involving a single experimental group consisting of 21 students. Data were collected using a pre-test and post-test administered before and after the treatment. The intervention, which involved the use of a visual dictionary as a learning tool, was applied exclusively to the experimental group. The results of the analysis revealed a notable improvement in students’ vocabulary performance. The average score increased from 66.66 on the pre-test to 78.1 on the post-test. Furthermore, statistical analysis indicated that the calculated t-value (51.25) exceeded the critical t-table value (281.21), confirming that the difference between the scores was statistically significant. These findings provide empirical evidence that the use of a visual dictionary is effective in improving vocabulary mastery among The seventh-grade students .
