Abstract

Datanya dianalisis   menggunakan program SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science)18.

Data of students’ learning outcomes collected through pre-test and post-test. While data of students’ achievement motivation level collected through questionnaire. The data of pre-test was taken before treatment, used to determine students’ variance, whereas post-test data was taken after treatment entirely finished to examine students’ learning outcomes differences. Data analysis using SPSS 22 with ANOVA Factorial 2x2 (two- way ANOVA. The hypothesis testing was conducted in 5% of significance level. The result of data analysis indicates that the p-value of t-counted is 0.000 lower than 0.05(˂0.05). It can be interpreted that there is a significant difference of learning outcomes between the students who have a high achievement motivation and those who have low one in writing an English essay through film-assisted inquiry-based learning method. Abstract

The difference between online and offline learning impacts the students' achievements in English learning. This study aimed to analyze the comparison between students' achievement in offline and online English learning. This study used mixed methods research between quantitative and qualitative research methods. The population of this research was 113 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique and took 28 respondents as the study's sample. The instrument of this study was students' achievement data, interviews, and observation. The result shows that the student who learned in offline learning had a higher score than those who learned in online learning. It was proved by the average score that students obtained. Students who knew offline got a score of 78.93. Meanwhile, students who learned online got a score of 75.00, indicating that offline learning is more effective than online learning. The data showed Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 less than 0.05. That value significantly differed between students' online and offline learning achievement. These happen because of several problems that affect student achievement; students' less cohesiveness, being uncomfortable studying, lacking attention and motivation, and the limitations of supporting facilities in learning. It makes students lazy to learn English.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the learning strategies used by EFL learners in developing their speaking skills. It employed a qualitative method with triangulation instruments including questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The participants were the EFL learners in the third semester of the English Education Study Program of Tadulako University (n=10), chosen by using the snowball sampling technique. The researcher distributed Language Learning Strategy Questionnaire (LLSQ) to learners to investigate their language learning strategies in speaking skills based on Oxford theory, which consists of six parts of the strategies namely memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, effective strategy, and social strategy. The results of the questionnaire showed that metacognitive has become the most frequently used learning strategy by successful learners with a mean score of 4.22 indicating as strategies are always or almost always used because this strategy help learners regulate their learning, such as paying attention, planning to learn as much as they can and doing self-evaluation to be better in speaking English. This study also found that learners who are successful in speaking skills used a combination of all kinds of learning strategies to improve their speaking skills. Learners have positive improvement in speaking components such as the better pronunciation of English words, use of good grammar, have more vocabulary, fluency in speaking, and can overcome the problems that may occur when they speak English.

Abstract

Feedback is necessary to measure whether students have understood well the lesson that has been delivered. Students should be given feedback to help them become autonomous learners who can regulate aspects of their thinking, motivation, and behaviour during learning. The study aimed to find out how feedback is implemented by the teacher based on Nicol’s framework and to find out students’ perceptions towards the application of formative assessment. A questionnaire was administered to get the data on how feedback that facilitates students’ self-regulation is implemented at MA Negeri 2 Kota Palu. Further, an in-depth interview was used to get students’ perception towards the implementation of feedback. The questionnaire showed that the implementation of feedback at MA Negeri 2 Kota Palu helps clarify what good performance is, facilitates the development of self-assessment in learning, delivers high quality information to students about their learning, encourages teacher and peer dialogue around learning, encourages positive motivational beliefs and self-esteem, and provides opportunities to close the gap between current and desired performance. The interview revealed that students have positive perception towards the feedback implemented by the teacher.

The mean pre-test score for the experimental group and the control group were 48.90 and 55.77. The mean post-test score for the experimental group and the control group were 73.90 and 60.04. The data was theoretically analyzed by applying the t-test formula where the degree of freedom (df) is 75. The result of statistical analysis shows that the t-test value is 3.19 while the t-table value is 1.99. The result of the research findings shows that the t-test value is higher than the t-table value. It implies that the research hypothesis is accepted. It means that the use of Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique can develop speaking skill to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bolano Parigi Moutong District.
