Speaking skills are one of the basic language skills that play an important role in oral communication. There are several problems with learning to speak experienced by the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The problem is that students lack vocabulary, which makes it difficult to speak. In addition, students’ lack of confidence hinders their ability to communicate using English during the English learning process. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to prove that the utilizing of problem-based learning can improve the student’s speaking skill of the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. To answer the problems above, researchers used a quasi-experimental research design with cluster random sampling to choose the sample. The population of this research were students from grade eight students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The samples of this research were students of grade VIII Pattimura as the experimental group and grade VIII Jenderal Sudirman as the control group. To obtain data, the researchers used YouTube as a learning medium and a voice recorder as an instrument to obtain answers from students. The results of this research prove that the implementation of problem-based learning can improve students’ speaking skill in the VIII Pattimura. The results of this research can help teachers find a new method that is designed to make students actively participate in expressing their ideas and opinions in English.

Abstract

There are several problems in reading comprehension faced by students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The main issue is that when students read, they still have difficulty understanding the text due to limited vocabulary. Additionally, they also have difficulty with complex text structures and have a low interest in reading. Therefore, this research aims to prove that the Project-Based Learning method can improve reading comprehension of students in grade VIII of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. Researchers answer the problems above using a quasi-experimental research design, with cluster random sampling to select samples. There are 22 students in class VIII Slamet Triyadi and 22 students in class VIII Imam Bonjol. To collect data, researchers use narrative tests with 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 essay questions. In the essay section, students are required to create short narrative texts based on story elements. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the use of the Project-Based Learning method is effective in improving the reading comprehension of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. These findings can help teachers to get new methods designed to make students to think creatively. Abstract

This study investigates the reading strategies employed by seventh-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design aimed at exploring and analyzing the strategies used by students to comprehend academic texts. The data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 21 students. The questionnaire includes statements rated on a Likert scale (from 1 = Never to 5 = Always). The findings reveal that while students frequently use strategies such as skimming, scanning, rereading, and using dictionaries to enhance comprehension, other strategies like summarizing, note-taking, and connecting ideas with prior knowledge are used. Moreover, many students rely on translation into their first language and assistance from friends, indicating ongoing challenges in processing academic texts in English. The study provides valuable insights for educators aiming to improve students reading comprehension on academic text.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors contributing to student anxiety during classroom presentations, particularly among fourth-semester students in the English Education Program at Tadulako University. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research involved questionnaires using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that psychological factors (e.g., low self-confidence, fear of negative evaluation), social factors (peer and teacher pressure), and environmental conditions (e.g., formal settings, lack of preparation time) significantly contribute to students’ anxiety levels. The research underscores the need for supportive classroom environments, targeted teaching strategies, and regular feedback to help students manage presentation anxiety effectively. This paper contributes to the development of anxiety-reduction interventions that can enhance students' oral communication competence in academic settings.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy can improve the reading comprehension of class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan or not. This research used a pre-experimental design that involved only one class as the experimental class. The sample of this research was class X TKJ with 31 students as the experimental class selected by using purposive sampling technique. The instruments of data collection were tests, they were pretest and posttest. The experimental class was given treatment by using the DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy. The data were analyzed statistically to measure the difference in score. The results shows an increase between the pretest and posttest results. The students means score before given the treatment was 51.10. After the treatment, the means score of students in the posttest was 71.48. By applying a significant level of 0.05, the researchers found that the value of t-counted (5.31) was higher than the t table (1.697). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy is effective to improve reading comprehension of grade X students at SMK Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan and it can be applied by teachers in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between the intensity of playing Mobile Legends and vocabulary development among senior high school students. The growing adoption of digital games for educational purposes—particularly in language learning—necessitates research into their integration within structured learning environments. Utilizing a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 25 purposively selected students from SMA Labschool Untad Palu who actively participated in a Mobile Legends extracurricular program. Data were collected through a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire measuring gameplay intensity and a 30-item vocabulary test targeting common nouns, verbs, and adjectives derived from gameplay contexts. The questionnaire demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.882), and all items were deemed valid. Results from the Pearson Product-Moment correlation analysis indicated a moderate, statistically significant relationship between gameplay intensity and vocabulary acquisition (r = 0.538, p = 0.005). These findings suggest that structured digital gameplay in English-language environments can support incidental vocabulary learning and serve as an effective pedagogical supplement to conventional instruction.

Abstract

The challenge of mastering English pronunciation poses significant problems for Indonesian students, who are accustomed to their native language. The English Education Study Program aims to cultivate proficient English speakers; however, many learners struggle with pronunciation despite this goal. This research aims to investigate the pronunciation problems encountered by EFL learners and to find out the underlying factors affecting the problems. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research involved 20 participants of third-semester English Education Study Program. Data were gathered through pronunciation tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The findings reveal that the primary pronunciation problems lie in segmental features, particularly with fricative consonant sounds /v/, /ð/, /ʒ/, /θ/, and /z/, as well as vowel sounds /æ/, /ɔ:/, /ɜ:/, /u:/, and /ɑː/. These problems predominantly arise from the absence of similar sounds in Indonesian, leading to systematic substitutions with more familiar phonemes. Additionally, inconsistencies in English phonetics and the divergence between written and spoken forms exacerbate these problems. The research identifies four main factors affecting pronunciation problems: (1) the influence of native language, (2) age, (3) amount of exposure to English, and (4) phonetic coding ability. The implication of this research suggest that instructors incorporate phonetics training into their curriculum to aid students in improving their pronunciation skills.
