Abstract

Food waste has an impact that can harm or disrupt human life. In Indonesia, food waste management has not been done in an integrated manner. This study was conducted to formulate recommendations for the proper handling of food waste for the people of Indonesia. Formulation of foodwaste management was carried out after collecting and processing data from respondents. Data on conditions and public opinion were obtained from 2 groups of respondents, namely the general public and environmental engineering students from several universities. Cluster analysis, AMOS approach and text mining were ulitzed as methods in data processing and analysis. The results showed that public opinion about knowledge of food waste is quite high. These recommendations for handling food waste are through the habits of food producers, the community as consumers, distribution of food before it expires, processing it into animal feed, processing it into an energy source with anaerobic digestion, and processing it into compost with good cooperation between waste collectors, companies composting and farmers using compost.

Abstract

The increase in population and changes in community consumption patterns are one of the triggers for the increasing volume of waste. Therefore, changes are needed to manage waste so that the accumulation of waste can be handled properly. Government cooperation is considered important in solving problems. The volume of waste from its source has to be reduced. Therefore, it is important to empower the community in managing waste. This study compares the community participation in 3 villages in managing waste in their respective housing areas and waste management managed by the City Sanitation Department. Waste management in 3 locations became areas that can reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill. The data collection methods include interviews, observation and documentation, while data analysis uses descriptive qualitative techniques. Based on the results of the study, one form of leader and community participation in environmental improvement efforts is by participating in managing waste, participating in 3R workshops and giving labor contributions in the form of community service.

Abstract

Environmental education (EE) is a tool for educating people about the environment, and EE textbooks are an essential resource for this purpose. This book was created by a group of elementary, middle, and high school teachers in the Medan City area who had yet to gain experience in textbook writing. A combination of problem and project-based learning (PBL and PjBL) by triggering teachers to develop a textbook for EE was carefully conducted. The project took three years, during which the teachers worked on conceptualizing and setting goals, selecting themes, creating the content, and designing teaching materials. Initially, the teachers conducted a poll which acted as a PBL approach to identify the most pressing environmental issues faced by the people of Medan City. This poll showed that waste management was the most crucial issue, followed by problems related to rivers, wastewater, waste disposal, and floods. The teachers then wrote chapters as a part of the PjBL approach for the EE book based on the identified issues and aligned with the EE curriculum. Over three years, the teachers tested the book with their students, evaluated the results, and revised it accordingly. The final questionnaire results showed that the experience of creating an EE book was valuable to the teachers and inspired them to consider making more EE resources in the future.

Abstract

Ainoshima Island is a Remote Island located north of Kyushu Island which is also known as a popular tourist attraction named Cat Island. The island is inhabited by a small population but is frequented by tourists to enjoy nature and fishing. The coastline is in the form of cliffs and sandy beaches, but there is a lot of marine debris on the sandy beaches. In addition, its location allows waste from the surrounding area to be carried by currents to this island. This research examines the diversity of categories and types of macroplastic litter trapped on the sandy beach of Ainoshima Island. Survey transects were conducted in the spring of 2023 via visual observation based on a survey method developed by NOAA, in 2012. The survey results were then categorized based on a photo guide database from the OSPAR Maritime Area for Active Monitoring of Marine Debris on the Beach. Data on the types of waste found are divided into artificial polymer materials (plastic), rubber, cloth, paper/cardboard, processed/finished wood, metal, glass, and ceramics. As a result, the plastic category is the dominant category of the total type of waste trapped in sandy beach areas.

Abstract

The concept of processing waste into energy has developed in the last few decades, especially in developing countries. This paper reviews a bibliometric overview of the waste-to-energy literature and related analyzes in developing countries in the last 10 years. The research method used is quantitative with bibliometric analysis on the Scopus database. Based on this method, the number of articles analyzed was 1,880 articles in the form of journals, conference papers, and scientific reviews. There are four stages of analysis, namely determining the source title, keywords, country, and selection literature. Data analysis using a bibliometric approach found 116 articles related to Waste-to-Energy Incineration in developing countries. This study uses VOSviewer software version 1.6.19 for data complexity. The results of this study indicate that the Waste to Energy was divided into five clusters with 56 keywords. The most powerful topics related to this Waste-to-Energy are Municipal Solid Waste and Technology. Research on related waste into energy has increased in developing countries since 2004. This study found keywords such as biofuel and electricity, indicating the current trends in Waste to Energy research in the visualization of research trend mapping.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country consisting of more than 17,500 islands. Urbanization and community agglomeration in urban areas in Indonesia are increasing the complexity of solid waste management in Indonesia. The old paradigm of 'collect-transport-disposal' waste management still occurs frequently in cities in Indonesia. This research is designed to be a systematic qualitative review. The relationships between good environmental governance and sustainable solid waste management are synthesized from a perspective of current conditions in Indonesia. The solution to sustainable waste management is generally carried out through well-organized waste management in an integrated manner from upstream to downstream with a 'cradle-to-grave' mindset, including the impacts that may arise therein. Implementing sustainable solid waste management requires commitment and support from all aspects of stakeholders. Good environmental governance is a comprehensive, dynamic, and complex concept that attempts to improve environmental conditions while promoting sustainable solid waste management. The results show that good environmental governance is very influential for sustainable solid waste management, but it still needs to be implemented optimally in Indonesia. Integration and synchronization of policies between the central government and local government must be further improved to implement good environmental governance.

Abstract

Currently, the world is facing the problem of plastic pollution in water bodies. Plastic waste has become an abundant pollutant in the marine, coastal and river environments, making it a major threat to aquatic life. Visual Observation in plastic monitoring is a popular method used to measure quantity, composition, and distribution, identify emerging trends, and design preventive measures or mitigation strategies. This study attempts to review recent studies regarding visual observation for detecting macroplastic objects in terms of current research trends and methodologies and suggests promising future research directions. This study used a systematic method with a bibliometric approach and qualitative content analysis to identify and review 108 articles on detecting litter objects in the water. The study results show that automatic object detection is starting to become a trend in visual Observation by relying on artificial intelligence (AI) with UAV devices and cameras that are processed using Machine Learning and Deep Learning methods which provide promising accuracy results.
