Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the potential of scallop shell meal (Placuna placenta) as a natural mineral source to increase calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) content in fish feed formulations. The study used an experimental design with four treatments of shell meal supplementation levels (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). Laboratory analysis showed that increasing the concentration of scallop shell meal significantly increased the levels of Ca and Mg in the feed, with the highest values being 92,656.67 µg/g and 2,006.03 µg/g, respectively, at the 30% treatment. Conversely, phosphorus levels decreased with increasing shell meal dosage. The results of the ANOVA test and Tukey's follow-up test showed significant differences (p<0.05) between treatments. This study proves that scallop shell meal can be used as an effective, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly natural mineral additive in fish feed, especially in supporting bone mineralization and energy metabolism

Abstract

Shrimp farming in Indonesia is dominated by traditional cultivation methods, therefore they do not have sufficient financial access to obtain expensive commercial feed. The Program for Application of Appropriate Technology (PTTG) aims to provide lessons on making independent feed and stimulating shrimp moulting for traditional farmers in Ma'rang District, Pangkajene and Islands Districts using local raw materials. The Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach model, which emphasizes the active involvement of the community in all activities, is used in this program. The knowledge and skills transferred from this study include the concept of artificial feed and moulting, preparation of raw materials, preparation of feed composition, mixing and weighing of raw materials, and pelleting and supplementation of feed. The results of the pre-test showed that the level of knowledge and skills regarding self-sufficient feed production and the manufacture of moulting-stimulating ingredients were generally in the poor category. However, after the learning activities, the post-test results showed that the level of knowledge and skills increased significantly and was generally in the good category. In general, partners believe that learning items are technically easy to apply, economically inexpensive, and ecologically can reduce agricultural and fishery waste. The lessons learned by traditional cultivators through this program can be utilized optimally in increasing production.

Abstract

The nutritional potential of copepods as live feed for larvae warrants further exploration, particularly for juvenile and adult shrimp. However, their small size presents a challenge, as larger shrimp may struggle to capture such small prey. A nutrient-based formulation approach was adopted by supplementing Oithona sp. copepod meal into vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) feed, and its effects on survival and growth were evaluated. A 35-day experiment was conducted in aquariums (20×20×30 cm) with an 8-liter water volume. The experimental feed was prepared by coating it with copepod meal. Four supplementation levels, each with three replicates, were tested: 0, 1, 2, and 3 g per 100 g of feed. Vannamei shrimp with an initial weight of 2.15±0.03 g and a stocking density of 16 individuals per aquarium were fed three times a day to satiation. Although the differences were not statistically significant, the survival rate of shrimp fed with supplemented diets (all 100±0.00%) was higher than that of the non-supplemented group (97.9±3.6%). In terms of growth, Absolute Weight Gain (AWG) and Specific Growth Rate (SGR) were significantly higher in the 3 g (5.27±0.02 g and 3.53±0.01% day-1), 2 g (5.13±0.08 g and 3.51±0.06% day-1), and 1 g group (4.88±0.10 g and 3.36±0.07% day-1) compared to the non-supplemented group (2.97±0.13 g and 2.48±0.11% day-1). In conclusion, the supplementation of copepod meal effectively enhanced the survival and growth of vannamei shrimp. The 3 g dose is the best dose that promotes the highest growth and survival.
