Abstract

Ethics review is essential prior to conducting research involving humans and animals. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethics review procedures and identify the causes of delayed ethical approval of the protocols submitted to Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret during 2022-2023. Retrospective data collected include protocol identity number, institution and educational level of the proposer, research type, date of protocol submission, completion of initial ethics review, and issuance of the ethical clearance certificate. A total of 458 protocols were received over 2 years period but the processing of 8 protocols were discontinued so that those 8 protocols were excluded from further analysis. Of the 450 protocols analysed, most involved human subjects (331; 73.6%). The majority of proposers were from UNS (309; 68.7%), were students (353; 78.4%), and had undergraduate education (166; 36.9%). The duration of the initial ethics review was generally <2 weeks (90.4%). Most (92.7%) protocols needed revision. The majority (66.4%) of proposers needed <2 weeks to revise the protocol. The total time for the entire ethics review process was 22.9 ± 14 days. Further evaluation found that the average duration needed for protocol revision was longer than that for reviewing (16 vs 9 days). It can be concluded that the ethics review process ran effectively so that almost all protocols submitted could undergo initial reviews in a relatively short time. The delayed ethical approval was due to the slow protocol revision process by the proposers.

Abstract

Deficits in self-care skills such as liking to eat fried foods, foods high in fat and salt, lack of rest, and laziness to exercise are the causes of hypertension in pregnancy. Hypertension in pregnancy can be overcome by providing educational assistance to high-risk groups in the form of preventive measures such as a diet low in sodium and fat, walking, consuming calcium supplements, monitoring weight gain, and hydrotherapy that is a member of "Bumil Waspada". The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of "Bumil Waspada" on the ability to take care of herself in pregnant women with risk factors for hypertension. The design of this study used one group pretest-postest with purposive sampling, namely pregnant women with risk factors for hypertension in the working area of the Selogiri Health Center, Wonogiri Regency, totalling 47 people. The media used are educational texts with pictures and questionnaires as instruments. Bivariate analysis uses the Wilcoxon test. The study results showed an increase in self-care ability in the "good" category from 1 person to 23 people and another 24 people in the "adequate" category. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a value of Z > z and p-value = 0.000 < 0.05, so there was a significant average difference between before and after the intervention. "Bumil Waspada" affects the ability to take care of herself in pregnant women with risk factors for hypertension.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders are common problems often experienced by the elderly. As we age, musculoskeletal tissue shows increased bone fragility, loss of muscle strength and redistribution of fat to reduce the ability of the tissue to perform its normal functions. One example of a musculoskeletal disorder that is often suffered by the elderly is low back pain (LBP). Health education related to LBP for the elderly is an important first step in preventing and managing low back pain in the elderly. Objectives To increase knowledge in the elderly at the Sant Antonius Purbayan Surakarta Parish Church regarding reducing the risk of LBP in the elderly at the Sant Antonius Purbayan Surakarta Parish Church through a health education program that is implemented. This Community Service activity was held on May 7, 2025 at the Aula Village of the Sant Antonius Purbayan Parish Church, Surakarta. This activity was attended by 101 elderly people. The methods used in this activity were leaflet distribution, direct demonstrations and counseling. The distribution of leaflets aims to provide written information that is easy to read and understand by the elderly, regarding ways to prevent LBP and important information related to back health. In addition, live demonstrations are carried out that allow participants to see firsthand the correct techniques or movements, such as good posture when sitting, standing, or lifting objects, which can reduce the risk of LBP. Finally, counseling is carried out to explain in depth the causes, symptoms, and ways to prevent LBP, with an interactive approach that provides an opportunity for the elderly to ask questions and discuss the health problems they experience. Educational activities about Low Back Pain have proven effective in increasing the knowledge and awareness of the elderly regarding the prevention and reduction of LBP from 53% to 73%.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is critical for the health of both mothers and infants, with global recommendations supporting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. This study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and challenges faced by pregnant women in Surakarta.: Five women between 28 and 36 weeks of gestation were recruited using snowball sampling, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis, conducted using NVivo 12. Revealed that while participants generally demonstrated a high level of preparedness for breastfeeding, challenges such as public discomfort, inconsistent readiness, and emotional uncertainties persisted. The support of their husbands was felt to be crucial by the participants in this study. However, as the study involved only five pregnant women, the findings should be interpreted with caution, and may not be generalizable to a wider population. Nonetheless, this study suggests that emphasis should be placed on addressing the individual needs of mothers and providing appropriate support interventions to help overcome emotional and logistical barriers, which could enhance effective breastfeeding practices in similar contexts.

However, independent baby massage practice by mothers remains uncommon, particularly among industrial worker communities. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers from the Family Wives Association (IKBI) at PT SGN PG Pesantren Baru Kediri in performing baby massage independently. The implementation methods included interactive lectures, baby massage demonstrations using training dolls, and distribution of digital modules in PDF format. The community service partners in this program were the board and members of IKBI at PT SGN, PG PSB Unit, Kediri, consisting of 40 women who are the wives of the employees. Evaluation was carried out using a closed-question pretest and posttest consisting of 10 items. The results showed an increase in the average score from 63.25 to 94 after the intervention. This program demonstrates that structured education effectively improves mothers’ understanding of infant massage and encourages regular home practice.
