Abstract

Grammar proficiency is vital for effective writing in English, particularly concerning the simple present tense in descriptive texts. While numerous studies have documented common grammatical errors, a gap exists in understanding the specific errors made by students at SMKN 5 Palu. This research aimed to identify and classify the types of errors made by tenth-grade students in their use of the simple present tense in descriptive texts and to determine the most prevalent error types. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach and Dulay's Surface Strategy Taxonomy, data were collected from 15 students through their written texts. The findings indicated that omission errors were the most frequent, accounting for 57.97% of total errors, followed by missordering errors at 8.70%. These results highlight significant challenges with subject-verb agreement and the correct application of auxiliary verbs. The study concludes that enhancing grammar instruction and incorporating error analysis can substantially improve students' writing proficiency. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions in grammar education to address specific error patterns and enhance overall writing skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Torue through an innovative learning method, namely by listening English songs. The low ability of students to remember, pronounce, and use new vocabulary in the correct context was the problem of the students expanding their vocabulary. This research used a quasi-experimental research design involving two groups: the experimental group that was taught using songs and the control group that was taught using conventional methods. The population is 369 students. A total of 60 students from classes XB and XC participated in this research, and data were collected through a pre-test and post-test to measure the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery, especially on verbs, nouns, and adjectives. The results of the research present a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after utilizing English songs. The mean post-test score of the experimental group increased from 45 to 89, while the control group only increased from 46 to 76. The hypothesis test using a t-test indicated that the t-value (6.14) was higher than the t-table value (2.042), which suggested that listening to English songs is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. This research concludes that the use of songs as a learning medium could create a fun learning atmosphere and increase students’ motivation to learn English.

Abstract

Many seventh-grade students struggle with speaking skills due to limited linguistic knowledge and speaking anxiety, despite the expectations of the Merdeka Curriculum for junior high school learners to communicate effectively in English. To address these challenges, group work is often recommended as a strategy to reduce anxiety and increase student participation. However, most previous studies were conducted at higher education levels, leaving limited evidence for younger learners. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether group work significantly improves the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 18 Palu. A quasi-experimental design was used, involving two intact classes of 28 students each. Both groups completed a pre-test and post-test consisting of three oral questions assessing fluency and comprehensibility. The treatment will be administered over six sessions, from the second to the seventh meeting. The experimental group will use the group work technique, while the control group will receive conventional instruction. The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U Test because the scores were not normally distributed. The findings showed that although both groups demonstrated increased mean scores from pre-test to post-test, the significance value (p = 0.113) exceeded the 0.05 threshold. Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, indicating that group work did not produce a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking skills. These results suggest that group work may require longer implementation or additional support to yield stronger effects for junior high school learners.
