Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in stress levels between students who smoke and students who do not smoke when working on their theses at the undergraduate program (S1) of Padang State University. This study uses purposive sampling techniques with a sample of 389 respondents. Based on the results of the study, it can be confirmed that there are significant differences in stress levels between students who smoke and students who do not smoke in working on their theses. Students who smoke consistently show higher stress levels than non-smokers. This confirms that smoking behavior is significantly associated with increased levels of perceived stress in the face of academic challenges. These findings support Lazarus and Folkman's transactional stress theory, which emphasizes the role of cognitive appraisal and coping strategies in understanding individual stress responses. Furthermore, the results of this study clearly support Cohen's perception-of-stress concept, which states that stress is influenced by an individual's perception of control and situational pressure. Therefore, non-smoking students have a more adaptive perception of control, resulting in lower levels of stress than smokers.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Student-athletes in higher education are required to balance demanding academic responsibilities with intensive training and competitive sports commitments. This study aims to explore the opportunities and forms of institutional support experienced by student-athletes at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in managing their dual roles as students and athletes. This dual-career pathway often leads to time constraints, role conflict, and psychological pressure, particularly when institutional support is inconsistent. This study adopts a qualitative approach to obtain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of student-athletes in the university context. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 15 undergraduate student-athletes from various sports disciplines at UPSI, transcribed using Sonix.ai, and thematically analyzed using ATLAS.ti 24. The thematic analysis reveals that institutional support, particularly academic flexibility, lecturers’ understanding, access to facilities, training and mentoring, financial assistance, and peer support, plays a central role in maintaining engagement in both domains. The findings highlight the importance of academic flexibility, lecturers’ understanding, and institutional support. In conclusion, effective institutional support is important for balancing academic and athletic commitments. This study deepens understanding of student-athletes’ experiences in a Malaysian public university and provides implications for strengthening support to enhance academic success, well-being, and holistic development.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media use, particularly TikTok, has increased individuals’ exposure to curated representations of others’ lives, which may intensify social comparison processes. This study aims to examine the effect of gratitude on social comparison among emerging adulthood TikTok users in Padang City. A quantitative approach with a simple linear regression design was employed. The participants consisted of 235 emerging adults aged 18–25 years who actively use TikTok, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using standardized measurement scales of gratitude and social comparison. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 25. The results revealed that gratitude has a negative and significant effect on social comparison (β = -0.331; p = 0.000), with a contribution of 10.9% (R² = 0.109). These findings indicate that individuals with higher levels of gratitude tend to engage less in social comparison. This study highlights the role of gratitude as a protective psychological factor in mitigating the negative impact of social media use and suggests that fostering gratitude may support healthier self-evaluation processes among emerging adults in digital environment.
