Abstract

Abstract Fresh-cut melon (Cucumis melo L.) is a popular minimally processed product widely consumed in Indonesia; however, peeling and cutting operations accelerate physiological deterioration, microbial spoilage, and quality loss, thereby shortening its shelf life. The application of edible coatings has emerged as a sustainable strategy to maintain the quality of fresh-cut fruits during cold storage. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of citric acid concentration on the physicochemical properties of corn starch-gelatin-based edible coating solutions and to assess their efficacy in maintaining the quality of fresh-cut melon stored at 10 °C for 12 days. A completely randomized design (CRD) with a single factor was employed, consisting of five citric acid concentrations (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%, w/v). The citric acid-enriched coating solutions were characterized based on visual appearance, pH, and functional group analysis using FTIR, while the quality of fresh-cut melon was evaluated through weight loss, moisture content, firmness, browning index (BI), total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), and sensory attributes. The results revealed that the incorporation of 0.5% citric acid significantly reduced the pH of the coating solution and effectively suppressed weight loss to 9.40 ± 2.06%, while maintaining a titratable acidity of 1.18 ± 0.20% and a browning index of 2.16 ± 0.55 after 12 days of storage. These findings demonstrate that citric acid-enriched corn starch-gelatin edible coating, particularly at 0.5% concentration, is a promising eco-friendly approach for maintaining the quality of fresh-cut melon during cold storage.

Abstract

The application of seed for true shallot cultivation is an alternative of the more common cultivation practice, in which 30% of harvested tubers used for cultivation purposes. The seed production of this temperate tuber, in the tropical region, is quite challenging due to low flowers and seed formation. Several studies showed that vernalization (cold induction) and application of Benzil Amino Purin (BAP) could be applied to improve flowering and seed production. However, such studies were conducted during the best cultivation period for about 3 months and thus, limit the production period of seeds. This study was conducted to observe the effect of both methods outside cultivation periods to flower and capsule numbers, fruit set, and weight of 100 seeds compared with common cultivation. In this study, bulbs of onion vernalized at 10oC for 30 days then became subjected to synthetic hormone (BAP) prior planted while control group The results showed that BAP treated shallot group has the lowest values for all observed parameters (1552.67, 312.11, 22.5%, 0.2244 gram) compared to those vernalization treated group (1592.44, 623, 30.5%; 0.2261 gram) and control group (6774.67; 3898.44; 57.06%; 0.3304 gram). Based on this study, it could be concluded that common cultivation is a better method to produce true shallot seeds during the offseason.

Abstract

Today, smallholder forests in West Java - Indonesia play an important role as suppliers of domestic and industrial wood needs. However, with forest managers who are not yet professional and the easy conversion of land use into non-forest, smallholder forests cannot guarantee the sustainability of wood supply. In supporting the implementation of sustainable forest management in smallholder forests, understanding is needed regarding the characteristics of smallholder forests. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of smallholder forest stands as a basis for assessing the sustainability of wood raw material supply. The research location is smallholder forest in Sumedang district. Data collection method is a purposive sampling method with moving plot. The results indicated that the density of smallholder forests per ha was 342.5 trees per ha, with 14 species of trees. The distribution of tree diameters ranges from 1-49 cm, with a predominant class diameter of 10-15 cm. The potential stands for smallholder forests are 32.68 m3ha-1. The cutting felling cycle is at the age of 6.5 years with a selective logging system at a diameter size of more than 15 cm, so it is not optimal and there is a tendency that it will not continue. Therefore, in increasing its sustainability, it is necessary to increase the cutting life. So, there is a tendency for community forest areas to be converted into other land uses.
